Unit I Exercise     Exercise1.  What is Interpersonal Communication?   Purpose: To familiarize students with the definition of interpersonal communication around which Communication Works is structured.   Instructions: A. Decide if interpersonal communication has occurred in each situation depicted below.   B. Place it on a scale of one [interpersonal] to seven [impersonal]?   C. Review the essential components of a developmental view of interpersonal communication (what specifically takes place in interpersonal communication?).   Situation #1: While she is waiting in line at the supermarket check-out counter, a woman who is in line behind Maria comments, “Your coat looks really warm. The important components in interpersonal communications would have to be: Listening, messages, feedback and teamwork would be things I think are important.                                   REPORT THE RESULTS IN YOUR PERSONAL JOURNAL   Exercise2.       How Much Do You Know About Each of Them?   Purpose: To aid students to assess their ability to communicate effectively with people of different cultures and to identify techniques they can use to learn more about others.   Instructions: A.     Make a list of individuals whose cultural backgrounds differ from your own and with whom you have recently communicated.   B.     Report on three of the questions listed below.   C.     Consider the other questions as possible areas of appropriate questioning and/or observation in future encounters with people of different cultures.   1. How do the individual’s feelings about socialization differ from your own? 2. How does the individual’s concept of self-differ from yours? 3. To what extent do the individual’s values and attitudes differ from yours? 4. Which of your behaviors did the individual have difficulty understanding or accepting? Which of her or his behaviors did you have difficulty with? 5. Which of the individuals you interacted with did you find most like you? Which of the Individuals most unlike you? Can you identify your points of similarity and difference? 6. To what extent was the individual more cooperative or competitive than you? 7. In what ways did the individual’s use of verbal language differ from your own? 8. In what ways did the individual’s nonverbal behavior differ from your own? 9. How did the individual’s treatment of time and space differ from your own? 10. In what ways did the individual’s thinking processes differ from yours?   REPORT THE RESULTS IN YOUR PERSONAL JOURNAL
