Teresa Perez April 26, 2024 NRS 465 Professor Cory Sheeler 1. Reflect on your personal and professional values and conscious and unconscious biases relating to your practicum site. Explain what steps you have taken, or will need to take, to become more aware of how these values and biases influence your interactions. How will values and biases impact your practice? My personal and professional values are a mixture of military and life experiences. For conscious and unconscious biases, working with many different types of walks of life. I have always looked at things from you never knowing their background. A person's beliefs, principles, and priorities are their guidelines and decision-making capabilities. Who are we to judge them for it? Learning about your own biases will help you shape yourself to be less judgmental be able to adapt to cultural influences and allow for new personal experiences. This is the best way to learn and understand other cultural norms. 2. Based on your own implicit biases, discuss the relationship that one's culture and environment have on these biases. How has the environment you live and work in shaped your own implicit biases? Is the environment of your practicum site impacting your biases? For me this question is hard as personally with how I was raised, I don’t have any biases. I believe that none of us should judge anyone and that we all should understand everyone is different and can do whatever they want, and this doesn’t affect you. Just make sure that you take care of your patient to their beliefs and their culture and respect them. My site for clinical is David Grant Medical Center, I am surrounded by other military personnel, veterans, and dependents. Which is what I have been doing since 2001 as I am military. So, for me there is no bias. I understand many military do what they have to do to make it through most days. Most of us have PTSD and they self-medicate as we are trained to not get mental health help or we get grounded. So there is more empathy for me with the member and many are young moms that don’t know. 3. How can self-reflection be used to help us exhibit ethical comportment and moral courage in decision-making in our practice?  Self-reflection is a powerful tool for exhibiting ethical comportment and moral courage in decision-making. By regularly examining one's values, beliefs, and biases, healthcare professionals can identify areas for growth, challenge assumptions, and ensure that decisions align with ethical principles and the best interests of patients. This ongoing process of self- awareness and reflection helps foster a culture of accountability, compassion, and integrity in practice.
