Engineering Analysis Type of assignment: Individual Points: 15 Successful completion of this assignment gives you the opportunity to demonstrate the following competency toward your class grade: engineering analysis . engineering analysis : accurately apply basic engineering concepts to a design problem Description The town of Sparkyville has been growing and needs an additional source of electrical power to meet the demands of its citizens. The government officials of Sparkyville have decided to appropriate funds to build a power plant just outside of the city. There has also been a grass-roots movement among the citizens of Sparkyville putting pressure on the elected officials to reduce the carbon footprint of the city. The unique geography and climate of Sparkyville provide a number of different renewable energy source alternatives (solar, wind, and hydroelectric). Your company plans to make a bid for designing this new power plant and has assigned you to come up with a design. A good design needs to produce as much continuous electrical energy as possible (large spikes in energy production are not desirable), be a free standing structure that can withstand environment (for instance, high winds and water spray), and cost as little as possible to build, operate, and maintain. Project Specifications You have a 1 ft x 1 ft plot of land on which to build your power plant. No part of the base of your power plant may be outside this boundary. The structure of your plant can extend up to 6 inches beyond the base of the power plant in all horizontal directions. Your power plant can be no more than 3 feet tall. If you decide to harness energy from the waterfall, the water must be redirected back into the reservoir (so that towns downstream have water). Availability of Energy Sources You must analyze one energy source and analyze all possible power output situations. While there is normally wind in Sparkyville, the speed of the wind can vary day-to-day. Sunlight in Sparkyville may vary over time, days, and seasons, thus, your power plant should be able to adapt to the changing conditions or else performance losses may be experienced. The waterfall falls 3 feet to the ground and will be flowing continuously, but you should make sure to protect all electrical equipment from splashing (there will probably be a lot of splashing) and water MUST be redirected back into reservoir. Use the following measurements for your calculations: Wind velocities High wind: 7.6mph 20% of the time Medium wind: 5.8mph 30% of the time Low wind: 4.9mph 50% of the time Average wind velocity is 5.71mph (miles per hour)
Water fall volumetric flow rate 0.125 Gallons/sec Illuminance averages out to Sunny: 16,000 lux 4 hours a day Partly Cloudy: 15,960 lux 4 hours a day Cloudy: 11,600 lux 4 hours a day Average illuminance over a 24-hour period is 7,260 lux Description and procedure: For this assignment, you will be required to show some of the calculations for the Sparkyville analysis. Your submission for this assignment must include responses to the following questions. 1. What type of renewable energy do you recommend for the Sparkyville power plant (i.e. wind, water, or sun)? Why? 2. For this type of renewable energy, what equation will you use to determine the amount of theoretical power available for your power plant? Define each of the variables in this equation. 3. Calculate the amount of theoretical power available to your power plant over a 24-hour time period based on the equation in question 2 and the measurements given in class. 4. Discuss the realistic power your power plant will produce taking into account losses from the design. (hint: the efficiency of these power plants is typically low) 5. How can you improve the efficiency of the power plant design? 6. Generative AI acknowledgement (optional) a. If you use generative AI to assist with this assignment, provide the following information: i. Describe which portions of the assignment used AI ii. List which model was used (e.g. ChatGPT) iii. Provide a link to the prompts used to generate the material used in the assignment How to submit the assignment: Submit a single Word document (*.doc, *.docx) or pdf. In order to receive credit for this assignment, you must submit the completed assignment to the course Canvas site assignments by the due date . The grading rubric for how this assignment will be assessed is shown below.
