Smog Lab Report Instructions: In this lab activity, you will examine the sources and impacts of air pollution. You will run several trials during the lab. Each trial will examine the impact of a different independent variable. Make sure to develop a hypothesis before observing each trial. Once the trial is complete, compare your hypothesis to the actual results. Use this lab report to collect data and analyze your results. Submit your lab report to your instructor when completed. Title: Smog Dispersal Lab Objective(s): See slide 1 of the virtual lab for these objectives. List the objectives below. Variables: The variables are described in detail in your virtual lab activity on slide 2 . Be sure to read these descriptions in the virtual lab before completing this section. List your controlled variables, independent variable, and dependent variable of each test of the lab activity. Remember, controlled variables are factors that remain the same throughout the experiment. An independent (test) variable changes so that the experimenter can see the effect on other variables. The dependent (outcome) variable will change in response to the test variable. Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Controlled variables: Layer height, Humidity, Lapse Rate Layer height, wind Velocity, Lapse Rate Layer height, Wind Velocity, and Humidity Independent variable: Wind Velocity Humidity Lapse Rate Dependent variable: Maximum Vertical Dispersal Height Maximum Vertical Dispersal Height Maximum Vertical Dispersal Height Hypothesis: Prediction 1: If we increase the wind velocity, the maximum vertical dispersal height and rate of diffusion will increase . Prediction 2: If we increase the humidity, the maximum vertical dispersal height will decrease after 24 hours.
Prediction 3: If we increase the lapse rate, the maximum vertical dispersal height of the pollutants will increase . Procedure: Access the virtual lab and complete the procedures described. Provide a brief summary of the steps you followed during the experimental procedure. Materials: Smog Virtual Lab Summary of Steps: 1. Depending on independent variables (wind velocity, humidity levels, and lapse rate) choose the specific value or level of each variable 2. Look at the top right graph to determine the distance of the dispersal of air pollution and record data 3. Look at the bottom right graph that specifically states the time duration and find the elevation height on the graph where the data becomes constant and record data 4. Repeat with the rest of the values or levels for each variable Data: Table 1: Wind Velocity and Maximum Vertical Dispersal Height Distance (m) Time (min.) Maximum Height (m) Trial 1 4000 m 67.5 min 510 m Trial 2 4000 m 22.8 min 400 m Table 2: Humidity Level and Maximum Vertical Dispersal Height Distance (m) Time (min.) Maximum Height (m) Trial 1 4000 m 67.5 min 510 m Trial 2 4000 m 66.3 min 600 m Table 3: Lapse Rate and Maximum Vertical Dispersal Height
