Discussion Prompt:
The management and leadership of human resources is critical to the success of a school leader. It requires being strategic, as well as the ability to apply fundamental knowledge related to policy, procedures, and professional ethics. For this week's discussion forum, respond and discuss the following:
Provide a definition of human resources in a workplace context.
Briefly explain the role of policy in the management and leadership of human resources.
Discuss why effective management and leadership of campus human resources is important. How does this assist in developing and sustaining a culture of engagement and commitment to a shared vision?
Human resources in a workplace is responsible for recruiting the best candidates, retaining current employees, and handling personal employee information. Human resources in education help hire the best quality teachers for the district, provide ongoing training for current teachers to promote retention, offer competitive salaries to attract potential teacher hires, and deal with health benefits packages for the district. Essentially, human resources is the management of people in an organization, in our case, schools/districts. Policy is necessary to establish principles and guidelines that all employees must follow for an organization to be successful. These policies are created to keep all individuals safe and to promote a productive environment
for all. Policy is a framework that can be used to make decisions and ensure that everyone is being treated fairly
and consistently. Ensuring that everyone is being treated fairly is vital for an organization to thrive. Members of an organization need to feel valued and supported. Policies that are fair and concise promote a positive work culture, leading teachers to work together towards a shared vision. Leadership that motivates its teachers and treats them fairly has a high retention rate. If teachers are treated unfairly, they are likely to feel unimportant and want to leave that specific work environment. That is why effective management and leadership of campus human resources is important.
