Portfolio Activity Unit 5 Question (OB)
In personal and workplace settings, conflicts inevitably occur. It is important that conflicts are
resolved as soon as they are recognized. Conflict resolution styles, such as avoidance,
competition, accommodation, compromise, and collaboration are used to address conflict
situations. In the following scenarios, suggest the appropriate conflict resolution style(s). Explain
your rationale for the choice and the anticipated outcome.
1.
Laura has planned to take a day off this week. Her supervisor Tara noticed that work
demands will be
high on the day of her request. She wants Laura to reschedule her day off
with the promise to allow her flex time and leave as soon as the job is accomplished.
The
Compromising style
is representing in this case. Laura and Tara concern for each other
regarding this matter. In this style, each party to the conflict works cooperatively and gives
up something to arrive at a compromised solution to the conflict. In this, there are no winners
or losers. It is useful method for temporary solutions to difficult problems and when time is
too short to arrive at a detailed and thorough solution (Novak, 2019). Laura had to give up
her time to avoid conflict with Tara, and the result would be a temporary solution.
2.
Two talented but aggressive teammates want to show off their skills during a project
meeting. One wants to take credit for the work he has done and the other tries to advance
his ideas front and center. The team leader wants these two to work together well.
3
Organizational Behavior and Theories
In the above case,
avoiding conflict style
will best represent this case, this style is used when
someone
has low concern for his or her ultimate goal
and
low concern for his or her
relationship with the other. This can demonstrate to be a good style to use if one is dealing
with a difficult person (Rahim, 2000; Robbins, 2001). Therefore, if other colleague is
interested in taking credit, just avoid him to help avoid conflict
.
3.
A company picnic is being planned. Two subgroups are tasked to come up with a fun and
enjoyable program for the employees and their families. One group has its own set of
group activities while the other group leans more toward individual participation. At a
recent communication meeting, the two groups have expressed their desire to work
together.
Accommodating style
is most suitable for the above situation, representing low concern for
self and high concern for others and identified with a lose-win orientation. In this case, one
team tries to give importance to the concerns of his opponents without asserting
themselves .This style can also be used when someone finds his position to be wrong, the
communication process gave access for subgroups to accommodate themselves
