CHAPTER 5 1. Define terms that relate to the clinical education of medical imaging radiologic science professionals. i. There is a clinical and didactic portion of curriculum within an accredited radiology program. ii. Clinical- Describes procedures and activities that occur in the clinical or hospital setting. iii. Didactic- Describes informational and instructional activities that may occur in formal or informal settings. iv. The laboratory serves as the bridge between clinical and didactic curriculum. 2. Explain the purpose of the clinical education in medical imaging and radiologic sciences. i. Clinical education allows for the observation, assistance, and performance (3 phases of learning) requirements for the completion of diagnostic medical imaging procedures. The clinical setting allows the student to integrate the knowledge gained from the classroom into clinical practice working with patients. 3. Describe the steps students may experience in the development of their clinical education skills. i. The student is required to competently demonstrate skills as similar as circumstances permit to the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective skills required in the clinical setting. ii. The program director is confident that the skills required to competently perform the simulated task will generalize or transfer to the clinical setting, and, if applicable, the student will evaluate related images. CHAPTER 6 4. Provide an overview of the administration of a hospital radiology department and the structure of hospital organization. i. The administration of a radiology department includes the radiology administrator, who works closely with the medical director and also oversees the various section leaders within the radiology department. Additionally, there is the department chair of radiology, who is the department's link to the formal organization of the medical staff. As for the structure of hospital organization, it has evolved into what is described as a horizontal matrix structure, which is designed to eliminate unnecessary positions in order to compensate for economic changes. 5. Describe how the radiology department fits into and complements the hospital environment. i. The radiology department is a subset of the larger organization that shares the same focus on the hospital mission to serve patients and has similar needs to those of the larger organization. It is often divided into sub departments, such as diagnostic radiography, US,NM, PET, CT, MRI, and IR. The radiology department develops its reporting structure to best meet the apparent needs of the patients and physicians while attempting to maximize the potential of its managers and technologist staff. 6. Understand the role of the radiology administrator. i. The responsibilities of the radiology administrator include staffing, planning, educating, supervising, organizing, coordinating, communicating, maintaining safety, and minimizing hazards in the workplace.
