1) Which scales did you score higher in? (i.e., internal vs external; rehabilitation, vs. utilitarian vs. retribution).Do you feel surprised, disappointed, or satisfied with your results? Why? The category that I scored the highest in was the CAS external scale with a score of 45. Although my score for my rehabilitation and retribution were very close. I was not surprised that I scored high in the rehabilitation and retribution because I think that the most important thing inside a prison is to work on rehab and make sure that inmates do not end up back in jail after release. I was also not very surprised that my external CAS score was high. I do think that a lot of crime takes place because people live in poverty and crime might be their only outlet, such as stealing for food or joining a gang for protection and security. I am also not surprised that my utilitarian score was the lowest because I don't think you can erase crime, there will always be crime somewhere. 2) What experiences have you had that may have contributed to the way you answered these items? My town is split up into 3 different sections; Hazardville, Thompsonville and Sherwood Manor. Hazardville and Sherwood manor are the more middle class/rich areas of town while Thompsonville is lower class and has a lot more poverty. Usually if you drive through Thompsonville you will see cops on almost every corner, where I live we don’t have any. It is known that crime happens where most poverty is, so being from a town where I can see it everyday also increased my answers. With that being said, I also have experienced a small crime where someone did something illegal, got caught with marijuana in their car and was underage at the time, before it became legal. They were arrested but the crime they committed did not make
them a bad person, they just did something bad, which also influenced most of my answers for the CAS questions. 3) How might your scores on the CAS and SGI influence your approach to working with individuals who engage in criminal behavior? Be specific in your answer I think that my scores are pretty accurate for how I would work with people who engage in criminal behavior. If I were to work in a prison, I would want to create programs that help inmates get integrated back into the community, whether that be getting a GED, cooking skills, home skills or so on. I think that working on rehabilitation is the most important aspect of releasing prisoners. If I were to work outside a prison, I would want to be a therapist for those inmates that are released, having mandatory sessions that allow for the inmate to talk about how they are coping in the real world. But I also believe that people who do bad crimes need to be punished, whether that be life in prison or the death penalty. 4) If someone were to score differently than you on these measures, how would their approach to working with individuals who engage in criminal behavior be different? I think that if someone was to score differently than me on any of these measures, then it might be for people who have not been close to a crime or close to someone who was arrested. My scores accurately represent how I feel about crime, meaning that not everyone deserves to be punished, but those who do need punishment deserve it to a high level. My external CAS was higher because I think that crime comes from external sources like the environment you live in, who you live with and so on. Someone who scored differently might approach working with these individuals with a more punishment based idea, that no matter the crime they should face the consequences. Focusing more on the idea of retributional stance than a rehabilitative approach.
