Lab 9: Laws of Reflection and Refraction Name: _______________________________ _ Laws of Reflection and Refraction In lab 9 we are going to explore the laws of reflection and refraction by shining a beam of light onto the interface between air and water. We are going to measure the angles of the incident, reflected and refracted beams and use this data to obtain an experimental value for the index of refraction of water and to answer some of the questions. Please click on the following link to access the browser-based simulation you need to do this lab: http://www.thephysicsaviary.com/Physics/Programs/Labs/RefractionLab/ Procedure: 1. Click on “Begin” AND then click on “Pause” (top left of screen) as soon as you can. The upper substance will be air (index of refraction n air = 1.00), and the lower substance should be water. In case the lower substance is not water, click on the name of the lower substance until it reads “Water”. Measure the angle of incidence (θ inc ), the angle of reflection (θ rfle ), and the angle of refraction (θ rfra ) and write them down on Table 1. Please remember that the angles must be measured relative to the normal (line perpendicular to the interface) . The following screenshot can help you identify these quantities: AGB_DC
Lab 9: Laws of Reflection and Refraction 2. Calculate the corresponding experimental index of refraction for water using the law of refraction: n Wexp = n air sin θ inc sin θ rfra 3. Click on “Resume”, wait one second and then click on “Pause”. Measure the angles of incidence, reflection, and refraction and write them down on Table 1. Calculate the corresponding experimental index of refraction. 4. Repeat step 3 until Table 1 is completed. 5. After completing Table 1, calculate the average of the experimental indexes of refraction for water (n Wave ) and write this value below Table 1 in the space provided for it. 6. Calculate the percent of error between n Wave and the expected value for the index of refraction of pure water, n W = 1.33, and write this value below Table 1 in the space provided for it. AGB_DC
