The Physics of Physical Fitness
Physics is the branch of science that deals with matter’s structure and how the universe’s fundamental elements interact. Specifically, it studies items ranging from tiny objects using quantum mechanics to the entire universe using general relativity. (Brown, L. M., and Weidner, Richard Tilghman (2024, January 5). Physics is used in every aspect of our lives, often in ways we don’t even recognize. For example, simply getting out of bed each morning takes energy conversion to lift and move our bodies. This concept is also true in our professions; one example of an industry that heavily uses physics is physical fitness, specifically for personal trainers. A personal trainer is an expert in physical fitness and exercise. “They combine that expertise with interpersonal and motivational skills to lead individuals and groups through exercise routines while educating them on the safest and most effective ways to achieve and maintain personal fitness.” (Personal Trainer Edu. (2022, November 29). Personal trainers use various types of physics principles when leading their clientele. The primary principles that physical trainers use are Newton’s Third Law of Motion and Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation. Newton’s Third Law of Motion states, “For every action (force) in nature, there is an equal and opposite reaction. If object A exerts a force on object B, object B also exerts an equal and opposite force on object A. In other words, forces result from interactions.” (Hall, N. (2023, August 7). Personal trainers use this basic physics principle in various ways when leading a workout for clientele. Specifically, this principle is represented in strength training, such as pushing a weight away from your body. This force is considered the action and results in the
