The Bible Toolbox Pre-Lab Worksheet Biblical Passage: Joshua 1: 1-9 Name: Malerie Latham Date: February 23, 2024 Time Invested: 60 minutes Observations Quick Observations/Questions Raised (What questions did the passage raise when you first read it? What are your first thoughts?) After reading the passage I felt very calm from the words God spoke to Joshua. A question that came to mind was, why does God pass on the leadership to Joshua? Just hearing “for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” just made me feel at peace, because I do know God is with you whenever and wherever. Translation Comparison (Are there any major differences in the translations? Check at least 3.) I used NASB, ESV, KJV, and NKJV to compare translations. NASB is worded differently than ESV in verse 1. NASB states, “Now it came about after the death of Moses...” and ESV states, “After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord...”. To me, NASB is easier to understand that Moses has passed away and the Lord is now speaking with Joshua. NKJV the wording was different throughout the passage it said things like, “Do not be terrified” and “acheive success”. KJV was more clear to me than ESV as it stated, “No one will be able to oppose you all the days of your life.” while ESV stated, “no man shall be able to stand before you...”. Historical Tools (What is the level 1 and level 2 context and how does that affect my reading of the text?) Level 1- This passage is located in the Old Testament in the books of History. After Moses’ death, God speaks to Joshua and commands him to enter the land that he is giving the people. He assures Joshua that if he obeys the law, God will accompany him throughout. Level 2- The view of this scripture is that Joshua had written it. It was written between the 15 th and 13 th centuries B.C.. During this time the Israelites were exiles in Babylonia and their land had been lost. Literary Tools (What is the genre of the text? What is the book/section/passage’s purpose and structure? How does this text fit that purpose? The genre of the scripture is Narrative History. It assured the Israelites that God would reward obedience and record the entering and conquest of the promised land. Theological Tools (Are there any key theological terms or concepts in the text? How do I understand the text in light of Christ and the full testimony of the Bible?
This scripture assures us that God will always keep his word. It explains about man and how we can succeed if we abide by the law of what God commands. It also demonstrates to us the impact of sin on all aspects of life and the fact that he is the only path to everlasting salvation. Original Meaning (What is the main meaning of the text in its original context to the original audience?) The primary message conveyed by God to his people through this passage is that we will always succeed if we obey him, keep the law, and carry out our assigned tasks. He will no longer allow us to live in fear, and he will always be by our side. Application (What does this text tell me about God? About myself? About the world? About how I relate to God? The text helps me understand who I am, what my purpose is from him, and how to accomplish it. This text tells me that success is ahead of me with him by my side as long as I follow him and abide by his rules.
