Week 3 Midweek Assignment 2 Persuasion is an interesting method that is used to clear any hurdles of doubt. Persuasion is a common topic that is observed the romance/drama, Pride and Prejudice, 2005. The classic love story primarily takes place in Hertfordshire, England and the year is 1811. The storyline follows the less than solid relationship between Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. The primary differences that Elizabeth and Darcy face are they have various social statuses and thus, Darcy’s vision and expectation of women differs than that of Elizabeth’s. The main characters that are observed in the section that displays persuasion are Elizabeth and her family. Much like her father, Elizabeth, feels the need to maintain appearances and continue to associate with people of high class. According to Social Psychology, there is a central and peripheral route to persuasion. Myers and Twenge (2021) describes the central route to persuasion to focus solely on arguments and if “those arguments are strong and compelling, persuasion is likely” (Myers & Twenge, 2021). Elizabeth’s father, although only he is described as a “gentleman”, does not want society to know that he lacks money. Later into the scene is when we notice that Darcy does most of the persuading when he tries to get Elizabeth to ignore the fact that even though he is a wealthy aristocrat and earns a large inheritance, he loves her and is not fazed by the social status differences between the two of them. Darcy also tries to persuade his aunt into believing that Elizabeth is good enough for him regardless of the amount of money she and her family has. Elizabeth is proud and argues that her family and good name make up for their lack of wealth. Persuasion consists of the following elements that are explored by social psychologists: the communicator, the message, how the message is conveyed, and the audience in which it is conveyed to. Thus, we can conclude that all these elements must come together for an individual or group to be persuaded. It is not only the message that is delivered, but also who says it. A
