Page 2 of 4 Exploring Respect as a Core Value in Symbolic Interaction The Saint Leo Core Value of Respect resonates deeply with the principles of symbolic interactionism. With faith in Jesus Christ as its bedrock, this value embraces the dignity of individuals and the diversity of skills in the community. It emphasizes that the real strength comes from unity while diversity, seeding healthy exchange of ideas and peaceful cohabitation at the same time (Saint Leo University 2024). As I reflect on my life, the Core Value of Respect has been a foundation of my interactions and relationships. I came to realize the value of diverse viewpoints and life experiences, realizing that each person contributes with something important which is beneficial to the society. This value has helped me to participate in more purposeful discussions, develop better bonds and foster the spirit of collaboration and acceptance. From the point of view of symbolic interactionism, respect is the core of how we see and ascribe meaning to others’ actions and behaviors. When interactions are treated with respect, it is an environment that facilitates open communication and stimulates effective discussions (Husin, Ab Rahman, and Mukhtar 2021). As a result, the co- creation of shared meanings and understandings is facilitated, allowing us the smooth functioning of social interactions. On the one hand, respect goes hand in hand with self, as it determines our feelings and behaviors towards others. When we show ourselves and others consideration, we emphasize our individual worth and confirm our identity, which both lead to better self-regard and stronger ties.
