What are various stakeholders saying about the impact of high-stakes exams on student anxiety and stress level? Dhvani Patel 1707000 EDU 100 A-03 Sandra Irving November 7, 2021
After some research and a deeper look into my inquiry and the controversy around high-stakes standardized testing. I was able to notice a pattern which proposed the overall negative impact of testing on the stress and anxiety level of students, confirmed by many different viewpoints. High-stakes standardized testing has been around for many years, but some of the questions and concerns that arise around this issue in addition to my inquiry is the the effectiveness of standardized testing in determining students performance in school, the negative effects it would have on a students future and most importantly, how it would change the quality of education students would receive. I have narrowed my inquiry down to a few reliable sources that delve into this issue and the outcomes seem to be the same from many viewpoints. French, J. (2019). “We’ve heard concerns”: UCP pauses plan to make high school diploma exams worth 50 per cent. Edmonton Journal . https://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-news/weve-heard-concerns-ucp-pauses-plan-to- make-high-school-diploma-exams-worth-50-per-cent In this journal article, the UCP has many conflicting viewpoints on changing the value of standardized tests to 50% of a students grade, and are claiming to put this issue on “pause”. The article looks at the pros and cons of standardized testing, and the only real advantage they could see was a better assessment of a student's performance in school. But the concerns that the administration themselves have pointed out are the pressures that this would put on students, especially after thinking about introducing PAT’s into grade 3 classrooms. High school students also had a say in this decision and clearly
mentioned how they experience stress and anxiety especially knowing that this one exam determined their future even if they had “one bad day”. This journal article shows both the perspectives of the education department and what they want to achieve through these tests and how this has a direct impact on the students stress level. Kearns, L. (2011). High-stakes Standardized Testing and Marginalized Youth: An Examination of the Impact on Those Who Fail. Canadian Journal of Education, 34 (2), 112-130. https://login.ezproxy.library.ualberta.ca/login?url=https://www.proquest.com/scholarly-jo urnals/high-stakes-standardized-testing-marginalized/docview/881645332/se-2?accountid =14474 This scholarly article explores the impact of high-stakes on the mentality of students directly from their perspective. The OSSLT is a test in Ontario that all students have to take during high school at some point. This form of assessment is said to be less high-stakes but that is not how students feel about it. The OSSLT is a critical assessment that determines the level of literacy a student has and failing this standardized test could put the student “at risk”. The word marginalization in the context of this article is referring to students that have failed the test and how it affects their confidence. After conducting an interview with a couple of students it was found that some of the major themes that were seen were students feeling degraded, humiliated, stressed, and shamed by the test results. This indicates the impact of high stakes testing not only on the stress level of students but as well as their confidence.
