INTRODUCTION Empowering Hispanic Communities: Enhancing Mental Health Awareness in Harrison County, Mississippi" This Social Change Portfolio addresses mental health awareness among the Harrison County, Mississippi Hispanic community. Despite the growing recognition of mental health issues globally, specific cultural and linguistic barriers often impede access to appropriate resources and support for minority communities, including Hispanics. Harrison county, a diverse
community with a significant Hispanic population, faces unique challenges in addressing mental health concerns due to cultural stigma, language barriers, and limited access to culturally competent services. This project aims to raise awareness, provide education, and promote access to mental health resources tailored to the needs of the Hispanic community in the county, ultimately striving for an awareness of mental health issues and their importance in our lives. PART 1: SCOPE AND CONSEQUENCES Empowering Hispanic Communities: Enhancing Mental Health Awareness in Harrison County, Mississippi" The identified problem within the Hispanic community in Harrison County, Mississippi, is the lack of awareness and access to mental health resources. Local prevalence rates of mental health disorders within the Hispanic population in Harrison County are not readily available. However, according to data from the Gulfport-Biloxi-Pascagoula metropolitan area, which includes Harrison County, Mississippi, approximately 6.4% of the population reported having a disability related to mental health conditions in 2019 (Data USA, n.d.). While this data may not specifically focus on the Hispanic community, it provides insight into the broader mental health landscape in the region. Nationally, nearly 22% of Hispanic and Latino Americans reported having a mental illness in 2021, compared to 23.9% of non-Hispanic Whites (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2021). In terms of access to mental health services, only 36% of Hispanic and Latino Americans received mental health services compared to non-Hispanic Whites (52%) (SAMHSA, 2021). The consequences of the lack of mental health awareness and access to resources within the Hispanic community in Harrison County are multifaceted.
