Module 1-1 Discussion: Change Over Time In your first post, introduce yourself to your instructor and peers. Share who you are, where you are from, and what your goals are in taking this course. Then, as you read the webtext, respond to the following prompt in one to two paragraphs. Choose a sentence or short section from the article embedded in your webtext reading about Irish immigration. Copy and paste the sentence or section into your discussion post. Along with this sentence or section, briefly explain how your choice illustrates the concept of change over time. You should also answer the following questions in your post: How does this article give you a better understanding of the changing perception of Irish immigrants in America? What forces allowed the Irish to be assimilated into U.S. culture despite initial resistance? Hello, my name is Emily, and I am pursuing a degree in Human Resource Management. I am currently a Process Assistant for Amazon which is basically an assistant manager. I have been married for almost 10 years and I have 4 cats, a bearded dragon, and an axolotl. I haven’t always been very good with History so I am hoping to learn more about how I can apply this class to my future. Something I choose while reading about immigration is, “There is a strong strain of nativism that runs through American culture and society. Especially in times of economic hardship, immigrants have been demonized for "taking American jobs"; at other times they have been victims of religious or racial/ethnic discrimination. The struggle of different immigrant groups to overcome these obstacles, and to be incorporated fully into American society and economic life, is a crucial element of the American story” (Schrag, 2010). This gives me a better understanding about immigration. Almost all immigrants abandoned their home to seek an opportunity for a better life. It was a dangerous journey because they were going somewhere they had never been. Back than there were only letters and articles for the immigrants to know about where they were going, and it took a lot of sacrifice to do what they did. The determination of the Irish immigrants allowed them to assimilate and become a growing nation. Reference:
