Introduction This discussion will include the forms used for the Peterson’s tax return and why they were used. We will also discuss the 1040 and how it is composed of five main sections that are income, adjusted Gross income, Tax, and credits, other taxes, and payments. These five sections will help determine the amount owed is refunded to you. The Petersons tax return When doing Harold and Sarah Peterson tax return, I choose to use 1040 because they had a home sale so I could not use any other 1040 form. Schedule A was also selected because it gave the Peterson’s the highest deduction. The sale of their home was inputted on Sale of Home Gain or loss, exclusion, and taxable gain worksheet. …show more content…
“Congress has elected to offer a number of tax credits, generally enacted to encourage certain outcomes or to accomplish specified societal goals. Some of these goals include assisting families with children, ensuring additional tax relief for low-income taxpayers, encouraging taxpayers to enhance their education, encouraging adoptions, and providing incentives for taxpayers to work” (Cruz, Deschamps, Niswander, Prendergast, Schisler, & Trone, 2011,pg 9-1), The credit section of the 1040 allows taxpayers to get these credits that is subtracted from the calculated tax in previous section, this lowers the tax is due at the end of the year. Other taxes and payments Other taxes are continuation of credits deducted in the previous section. In this section you may deduct taxes paid by the taxpayer for self-employment tax and social security and Medicare taxes paid. These items are also deducted from the taxes you owe at the end of the year. The first part of the payment section is the amount of tax you paid. Some of the different items in this section are earned income credit, first time homeowner’s credit. Refund or Amount owed. The last part of the 1040 is the calculation of either of if you are owed a refund or if you must pay the IRS. After all the sections of the 1040 are completed the last step is subtract the amount of tax

* What are the differences between the following components of taxable income? Provide at least one example of each.
Tax deductions reduce taxable income; their value thus depends on the taxpayer’s marginal tax rate, which rises with income. Tax credits directly reduce a person’s tax liability and hence have the same value for all taxpayers with tax liability at least equal to the credit. In addition, some credits are refundable; they are not limited by the taxpayer’s tax liability.

A. Filing Status: There are two choices of filing status available to this taxpayer couple, married filing separately and married filing jointly. For this taxpayer couple the recommended filing status is married filing jointly. The tax rates would be higher if they filed separately. Additionally, some deductions (e.g. tuition and student loan interest), credits (e.g. Earned Income Credit) and exclusions would not be allowed if they filed separately. Since they sold a personal residence during this tax year, they will be able to exclude up to $500,000 profit from the sales as joint filers rather than only up to $250,000 if filing separately. There will be 2 qualified personal exemptions and 3 exemptions for the 3

This type of form is often used by tax payers who have lost their old returns or who are filing for a mortgage. Some companies, banks or mortgage lenders require previous tax forms to make lending decisions. When older returns are needed, form 4506 is the way to obtain them. Once the taxpayer signs and dates the document, they just have to list any third party that they
The 179D tax deduction is part of a federal tax code section that gives tax reducing incentives for the construction of new commercial or government buildings that are energy efficient. Sometimes, it can also be used for other buildings that are remodeled to include new energy efficient features though. It is unique in comparison to other tax credits because of the way it can give both the building 's owner and the architect who designs the structure tax incentives. Because it motivates people to choose environmentally safe building attributes, it is also sometimes called the Environmental Protection Act (EPAct). Many people have become interested in this credit because it offers a hefty tax discount of roughly $1.80 for every square foot of the building that is claimed. This can quickly reduce a person 's tax burden, especially if it is combined with other tax credits, such as the Manufacturers ' Energy Efficient Appliance credit. But, those who wish to claim the deduction must include special features that support energy efficiency. Some of them include:

The United States tax system is in complete disarray. Republicans and Democrats agree that the current tax code is complex, unfair, and costly. The income tax system is so complex; the IRS publishes 480 tax forms and 280 forms to explain the 480 forms (Armey 1). The main reason the tax system is so complex is because of the special preferences such as deductions and tax credits. Complexity in the current tax system forces Americans to spend 5.4 billion hours complying with the tax code, which is more time than it takes to manufacture every car, truck and van produced in the United States (Armey 1). Time is not the only thing that is lost with the current tax system; Americans also lose
I separated the items in my receipt by putting them into two categories. The first category was items that were taxed, the second category was items that were not taxed. This helped me organize the items in the receipt and to tell the difference between the taxed and non-taxed items. In doing this I learned that only some items get taxed. Food does not get taxed because it is a necessity for all people. Things that are taxed are items that are not food. Items like office supplies, shoes, clothes, etc. These items get taxed because they aren’t really a must have like food is. Food is not taxed because it is something we must all be able to afford. Items that are not food don’t get taxed because they are resources that not everyone needs.
father’s taxes if I had to. I will most likely continue to use a tax software to complete my own
When I went back to my notes that I took during the Taxation class and think about filing a tax return with IRS I see that there are a lot of similarities between individual tax and business tax. However, weighing individual and business tax on the same gauge will evince how much they are different from each other (Pack, n.d.). Individual taxation is a type of tax return filed by an individual for both single and married taxpayers whether they have dependents or not, they will file the tax returns on Form 1040. The Form 1040 indoctrinate tax filers for information on their filing status and number of dependents, the income section includes wages, salary, taxable interest, capital gains and other types of income. filers can claim deductions for expenses, education, moving expenses and many other categories.
