Introduction This discussion will include the forms used for the Peterson’s tax return and why they were used. We will also discuss the 1040 and how it is composed of five main sections that are income, adjusted Gross income, Tax, and credits, other taxes, and payments. These five sections will help determine the amount owed is refunded to you. The Petersons tax return When doing Harold and Sarah Peterson tax return, I choose to use 1040 because they had a home sale so I could not use any other 1040 form. Schedule A was also selected because it gave the Peterson’s the highest deduction. “Congress has elected to offer a number of tax credits, generally enacted to encourage certain outcomes or to accomplish specified societal goals. Some of these goals include assisting families with children, ensuring additional tax relief for low-income taxpayers, encouraging taxpayers to enhance their education, encouraging adoptions, and providing incentives for taxpayers to work” (Cruz, Deschamps, Niswander, Prendergast, Schisler, & Trone, 2011,pg 9-1), The credit section of the 1040 allows taxpayers to get these credits that is subtracted from the calculated tax in previous section, this lowers the tax is due at the end of the year. Other taxes and payments Other taxes are continuation of credits deducted in the previous section. In this section you may deduct taxes paid by the taxpayer for self-employment tax and social security and Medicare taxes paid. These items are also deducted from the taxes you owe at the end of the year. The first part of the payment section is the amount of tax you paid. Some of the different items in this section are earned income credit, first time homeowner’s credit. Refund or Amount owed. The last part of the 1040 is the calculation of either of if you are owed a refund or if you must pay the IRS. After all the sections of the 1040 are completed the last step is subtract the amount of tax
