A Defense of Abortion In her argument on abortion, Judith Thomson discusses some major points about abortion. She deals with extreme cases and those extreme cases help us to realize a single perspective of abortion. For example, she talks about the violinist attached to you. In that example, you keep everything constant and focus on a single point, violinist being dead if you unattached him. This way of thinking would provide partial answers. That is, in real life moral issues are combined of different extreme cases. This is where the flaw in her argument is. Her argument misses out the fact that such extreme cases do not occur alone. They occur in interconnection with other extreme cases. To …show more content…
However, you have an emotional attachment to your baby. Furthermore, you do not have the responsibility of looking after the violinist. Yet, it is your duty to look after your baby. As Kant suggests, if you act according to your duty, you will be acting morally. Therefore, when you look after your child you are doing the right thing. Remember the distinction between good and right is huge. Doing the right thing might cause bad things, or vice versa. Moving with the violinist example, she suggests that the violinist is innocent. Well, I am not a devil too. I am innocent as well. If giving birth will risk my life, the theme of innocence is irrelevant. Rather, the will should be relevant here. As Kant suggests, what determines an action's morality is the will behind it. In order to perform the right action, one must have a good will. The good will here would be giving birth. However, this is a coin with two sides. What about mother's life? She will die if she gives birth. Sacrificing the mother or the child? In this case the mother should act in accordance with good will and give birth to her child, even if it means risking her life. Therefore, even with the mother risking her life we are moving with a single conclusion; mother should give birth. Last but not least, she talks about fetus being a human being. Even though this seems
Abortion is wrong because it is the killing of an innocent baby. Many people today think that there is nothing wrong with having an abortion. But not only is it killing a baby, it can also cause long term effects on the person getting the abortion. Some people can bleed to death while others may have fertility issues afterwards. This paper will state exactly what abortion is, statistics on abortion, the Church and cultural views of having an abortion, and other options than having an abortion such as adoption.
For hundreds of years women helped each other to abort their pregnancies. Without legal prohibitions, women in Europe and the United States provided abortions and trained each other to perform the procedures. In the past century different states had begun to outlaw any procedure that would terminate or avoid pregnancy. In 1973(?) the United States Supreme Court asserted a woman's constitutional right to abortion in determining Roe v. Wade. After several decades of quiet disagreement, abortion has once again become a political hotbed. Under the direction of religious fundamentalists and fanatical anti-abortionists, this privacy right is in jeopardy. While both sides present strong arguments, these same positions have already been
The subject of abortion is one of the most contentious issues in America today. Most people who oppose abortion do so for religious reasons. Their belief is that a fetus is a baby and that it is wrong to kill it. People who are for abortion argue that it should be okay to terminate a fetus because it is not a baby and has no rights. In this paper I will argue that abortion should be legal in any instance because I don’t think it’s reasonable to assign arbitrary cut-offs dates to it, simply because no one can yet prove or agree upon when a fetus becomes a fully sentient being.
“Western philosophy’s idea of the autonomous self: the pregnant woman is in fact both a person in her body and a vessel. Rather than seeing both beings as alive and interdependent—seeing life within life—and acknowledging that sometimes, nonetheless, the woman must choose her life over the fetus’s…”.
The medical definition of abortion is, " the termination of a pregnancy by loss or
“Abortion is a procedure, either surgical or medical, to end a pregnancy by removing the fetus and placenta from the uterus.” This definition (A.D.A.M., 2003) is a dry medical definition that lacks meaning. This paper attempts to apply meaning to this dry definition, and in doing so, will show the less known and less published side of abortion; the human side.
I am against abortion for a couple of reasons. I believe adopting instead of aborting is a better decision. Abortion is murder. Condoms are available and inexpensive. There are also other forms of birth control. Some people say it’s their choice so I think people should choose wisely, by not killing a baby. There are also many programs in the U.S. that will aid people financially, for people who claim to be financially unfit to raise a child.
In America alone, approximately 1.5 million abortions are performed every year. That is about one abortion every twenty seconds, yet nothing is being done to reduce these numbers. Why does the law allow the murders of so many innocent babies to continue? The answer is simple, it shouldn’t. Abortion is wrong and should be stopped. This fact is apparent when one sees the suffering that abortion causes, not only to the baby, but to many others as well. All this damage can be so easily avoided when one sees the alternatives and the truths behind abortion myths. Abortion has brought about suffering to many people in more ways than one. Clearly, a lot of the damage is done to the baby. It will never have a chance to live. It has
An Anti-Abortion Discussion A woman walks into an abortion clinic one day and has a partial birth
It also says in the Psalms that we are known to God even before we are
This is a difficult question because the topic of abortion has a lot of people involved for different reasons. E.g. doctors dealing with the medical issues, MP’s is dealing with the legal issues etc. People have different views on this subject and so it depends who you are asking. People who have had an abortion think that it was the best thing to do because of their individual situations and experiences and would disagree. However others would agree, because of their religious beliefs or opinions on when life begins.
drugs can be given in pill form to make a fetus. A pregnant woman first
Abortion is one of the most controversial topics in our world today as some people are prolife and others are prochoice. The people who are prolife do not agree with the idea of abortion because they believe it to be the same as murder. Still, abortion should remain legalized because a woman should have the right to decide if they should have an abortion or not.
Since the birth of America in 1776 till today, if put together all the military deaths in America’s Major wars like American Revolution, Civil War, World War I & II, Korean, Vietnam, Iraq, Persian, and Afghanistan war comes in total approximately one million causalities. On January 23, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its landmark decision the case of Roe v. Wade. Since that day, America is not the same, the country is divided between Pro-Choice and Pro-Life activities, in every election, it is one of the topics in debates, both sides are filled with emotions, attacks, and irrational arguments when it comes to abortion discussion. Until today, there are approximately 60 million abortions done in less than 5 decades. One of the pressing ethical issues in our society is abortion. Just the sheer number it has been done every year and the innocent lives that have taken without any faults of their own. Abortion is to give death penalties for the sins they have not committed. I would argue, based on the Nature Law Theory when it comes to ethical value, abortion is fundamentally wrong.
The abortion argument is always a tough split decision. Some people lean towards pro-life and some towards pro-choice. The pro-life group believes that every fetus should be kept alive since they are a developing human, and every human has a right to life. The pro-choice believe that if it’s the woman’s body it should be her choice, especially in a case of rape. For my stance on the argument I stand with both pro-life and pro-choice due to certain arguments. These arguments came about after the Supreme Court case of Roe vs. Wade.
