7. Be the example
Many time people in charge will lead by the motto “Do as I say not as I do”. By doing this one sets across the notion that all an employee has to do is promote then they can slack off. Imagine what will happen to an organization if that mindset was the norm for its managers. A company or organization would hit a screeching halt in productivity. A leader must set the bar for their employees by being the example. Good leaders will often roll up their sleeves with the rest of the organization. Even if you are not in a leadership position you are still a leader. Showing how the expectations are met in a consistent manner and not giving a mixed message to others is vital to good leadership.
8. Focus on the development of others
A good leader will have others to follow in their footsteps. Being a mentor to others will help ensure that true growth will come from those that follow you. Even if your organization does not have a mentorship program, taking it upon yourself to direct the personal development of others will not only increases the success of the individual and the company, but also will increase your own development. What good is a leader to an organization when they leave and everything falls apart? Showing others how to lead and teaching them the tools they need to lead will help to establish longevity.
The mentorship of employees is not only for the brightest star, but also for ones that have potential but fail to reach said potential.
A good leader shows others the proper way to act in everyday life. Good leaders help others with their challenges but they also acknowledge that they themselves have challenges in everyday life. A good leader is there to support and aid anyone at anytime. Even if that means getting up early to help before a long day or staying after a hard day and provide guidance those who need it a true leader will do it. Leaders put in the extra work to pick up the slack within the group if it is necessary. Leaders change groups into families. You can not be a leader over others if you first can not lead yourself in the proper way. The only thing different from leading yourself over leading others is that the actions you make while leading yourself only affect you, when you lead others, your actions affect you and others. The person has to be able to take responsibility over their own actions, respect themselves and show, do the work that is necessary and cooperate with
In the modern world, mentoring has long been used to help nurture and grow people. This is one way that many companies attempt to hang onto the top talent at their company. The goal is to create employees that are knowledgeable and who have the wisdom and experience to be successful at the company.
In conjunction with my first strength, my second strength has been identified as the capacity to help subordinates grow and develop within their career. I have demonstrated this by mentoring employees. This has included helping them grow within their current position as well as aiding them in moving up from their current level within the organization. This aid is often in the form of teaching, listening, and giving them my insight to what I have observed within the organization in concern to both reviews of work and job promotions. Development of employees has to be a quality that is purposefully demonstrated consistently and not just when an employee asks for help. This requires a regular effort on the part of the leader of a team. In order to help an employee in this aspect a leader has to know employees on a basic fundamental level. The leadership practice of aiding in an employees’ career growth cannot be effectively engaged without the insight gained by the understanding and communication
A good leader leads from the middle and not the front. Leadership is working with people in order to complete a task, instead of telling others what to do. Delegating and helping others realize their potential and work to their strengths is what leadership is all about. Leadership is the ability to listen to others and show them the right path. I strive to be a leader in all I do. As a pharmacist, I will be the leader in the community and be able to help patients with their medical needs. While I have had times in my academic classes that I am able to step up and be the leader, I often use my leadership skills most in extracurricular activities. I have served as President of my cooperative house, where I learned so much from the constant leadership.
Being a good leader is done by making the correct choices and inspiring people to complete their tasks and work together as a team. In order to be a great leader you need to think outside the box and travel the road that is seldom or never traveled. A great leader will use their inspiration and determination to complete the tasks no matter what hurdles or problems they
A good leader understands himself or herself. He or she must have a clear goal that others are able to see and understand. A good leader must be reliable and motivated so that he or she can lead others. A good attitude is also very important for effective leadership. A leader with a good attitude can make a difference in their workplace, among colleagues and improve the environment.
A leader must have a high commitment level to the organization, the ability to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the personnel they work with to develop effective teams, and the ability to communicate effectively to avoid misconceptions. A leader must care about and support their members in ways that help both the member and the organization as a whole. As Lt. Col. Matt Joganichs’ uncle stated to him prior to administering the commissioned officer’s oath, “make sure you take care of your people. If you do that, they’ll take care of you.”1 To me, taking care of and supporting your member’s means to ensure people have a positive work environment, they have access to the training the need to perform their jobs, are able to provide input to policies that effect the organization, and that there are procedures in-place to ensure people are being treated fairly. My leadership philosophy was developed to encompass these leadership traits to provide a solid foundation for the organization to succeed. Whenever a leadership philosophy is developed it is always good to perform continual analysis of it for improvements. One of the best ways to improve upon your leadership philosophy is to discuss leadership challenges with those that are more experienced than you in
Merriam Webster defines leading as, "the initiative in an action; an example for others to follow." Becoming a leader is not difficult, but becoming a good leader is a fantastic feat. In Gary Vaynerchuk's TED Talk, [INSERT TITLE HERE], and the book [INSERT HERE], they analyze how leaders advance their brand, the importance of service in a leadership role, and the effects of practicing helpful business methods.
Mentoring is a strategy that is beneficial to increased productivity in the workplace as well as a fulfilling love for one’s career. Mentoring can take place at many levels. It can occur at an education level or as we enter into prospective careers. Those who miss out on the opportunity to be mentored, have a lower chance to perform at high levels or receive positions that are more successful. Mentors and protégé’s work on challenging tasks and activities together, in an effort to enhance the skills of the protégé. The earlier a protégé is taken under the wing of a mentor proves extremely beneficial.
A great leader is a role model for others and should be able to lead others by being able to motivate, inspire, and influence others to take initiative, and complete their duties or goals. Leading by example you must always be a professional, be able to reinforce verbal guidance by demonstrating commitment and action.
Part of a leadership is accomplishing the proper way to take care of others when they are in need. Taking time to know everyone and frequently providing to them love and ambitious happiness is what keeps you successful in your work, career, and your lifetime. By being a great leader, one must know that great leaders seek self-improvement which is number one leading reason for success. No matter how hard it is or how long it takes you should always do the best to try to learn new things everyday. Nothing is impossible and nothing can be done without mistakes as long as you take them and convert them as turning points in your life. Leadership has taught me to always stand out for others who are in need because they will stand for you one day. Honesty, courage, and trust characterize your personality with such an honor, as leadership pertains to this path as well. Yes we may struggle and yes we may fall but there will always be a solution to our problem that will help us get back up more stronger and more powerful than ever. Nothing can stop us from being who we really are or from pursuing our goals and dreams in life. We will be this generation that will change everything around us because of the point that we lead more than we follow. Which is why leadership has put an effect not just on me but on every mankind who thought that it
In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.
Mentorship is very important in the workplace especially in the area of training and development. The mentor-protégé relationship is a much needed relationship that begins in the early career stage and this relationship involves the current or new employees and the supervisor or other colleagues that provide work-related guidance. The relationship itself is comprehensive and involves “educational, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual development” (Greenhaus,, Callanan, & Godshalk, 2010, p 211). One of the initial task of the early career the establishment of the career field which involves the gaining of the workplace competence, learn what is needed to excel in the organization, and to gain acceptance in the workplace to be recognized as the valued employee. There are many ways of achieving the above mentioned advantages in the workplace which one main method is through the use of the mentorship program.
What qualities make a good leader? You can ask a hundred different people, and you will get a hundred different answers. A good leader is someone who accomplishes the mission, has the respect of their subordinates, and makes the difficult decisions when needed. For me, I believe that a great leader needs to have a variety of qualities, but most importantly a sense of fairness, hard work/care, and common consideration for others. Different experiences throughout my life and time at West Point have lead me to believe that these three tenants are what are most needed for a great leader. In terms of a leader’s moral character, common consideration has the greatest influence on the success of a leader, because without common consideration, a
Having effective leadership not only inspires employees to reach their highest potential, but furthermore it is a good confidence builder. For instance, I live by certain leadership principles of knowing myself and seeking self-improvement, being proficient at my job, making informed decisions, leading by example, motivating my subordinates and keeping my subordinates current on any potential changes. My responsibility is to provide guidance and mentorship to motivate them to be the best they can be.
