Abortion : Abortion And The Woman Planning

In the year 1970, it was illegal for women in many states to get an abortion. One day, a woman named Jane Roe wished to challenge those laws which kept her from getting what she wanted: an abortion. Her stand against these laws was, is, and will always be controversial among American citizens and people around the world. The historical court case in which this occurred was called Roe v. Wade, and was caused by the events of one woman and many factors of the country in which she called home.

Roe v. Wade sparked controversy in 1972 and continues to provoke debates and politics today. When Roe, a Texas resident, attempted to eradicate her pregnancy by abortion she was denied the right due to a law prohibiting that very thing. According to this law, women were not allowed to resort to abortion during pregnancy unless their own lives were in danger. In return, Roe filed suit.

By 1965, it looked like Pro-Life was winning because all fifty states of America made it illegal to have an abortion except with certain cases, like rape. In 1973, however, one woman got a chance to take her argument to make abortion legal to the Supreme Court. When the Supreme Court was dismissed and the case was over that women and the side of Pro-Choice had surfaced victoriously. That did not end the battle between the two sides. 43 years and fifty-eight million, seven hundred and fifty thousand abortions and counting, the fight still rages on just as fiercely, if not more fiercely than before. Except this time instead of the Pro-Life side having the upper hand, the Pro-Choice side has control.

In the Roe V. Wade case a lot of people didn't know what it was really about or don't know about it at all nowadays. This case went down in Texas during 1973 and was between Norma McCorvey (aka Jane Roe) and Sarah Weddington, The lawyer. The case was challenging the constitutionality of the Texas criminal abortion laws. The case also went against ones privacy that was protected by the 14 amendment. The case was fighting the fact that you could only get an abortion if the mother's life was at danger. That's the part that was going against your privacy as an american citizen. The law now states that you may not get one after the baby has passed the fetus stage. The only way you will get an abortion after the fetus stage is if the mothers life is at stake. The U.S. Supreme Court case Griswold v. Connecticut (1965) struck down a law that prohibited birth control. The Supreme Court held that the law violated the right to marital privacy. This case is important to feminism because it emphasizes privacy, control over one’s personal life, and freedom from government intrusion in relationships. Griswold v. Connecticut helped pave the way for Roe v. Wade. The case of Roe v. Wade began in 1970 when Norma McCorvey took federal action against the district attorney of Dallas, Texas, Henry Wade to ask: Does the Constitution embrace a woman's right to terminate her pregnancy by abortion?

As said, I believe that deciding whether to abort or not is not an easy decision for anyone, and that is why in my opinion, that hard decision should be left to be made by the woman in question. I am pro-choice because I think woman should be able to decide for themselves about their future, and nobody should restrict that freedom. I understand that there is a lot of morality involved in this issue with the fact that abortion is murderer, and people has strong positions about it. But at the end of the day, how I see it, is that nobody should force a woman to give birth to a child they do not want, because it is both not fair for the woman to be forced to take care and raise that child, and also it is not fair for an innocent baby to be born

Pro-Choice, Not Abortion The decision to support abortion is the same as a decision to support free speech. In the US, a woman has the right to make the choice. Women have the right to make decisions about when and with whom they reproduce with. Fredrika writes, "No woman wants an abortion as she wants an ice cream cone or a Porsche. She wants an abortion as an animal caught in a rap wants to gnaw off its own leg" (Mathewes-Green, Real Choices, 19.) What Fredrika is trying to say is just because a person is pro-choice doesn't not make them pro-abortion, it makes them a person with a difficult decision. In the argument of abortion, there are many sides to be seen. There's the pro-life side, which is the side that is against abortion. The next is the pro-choice side, which is the side that supports abortion. The two rival sides of this topic have a strong fire burning between them, making this one of the biggest political and moral debates of my lifetime. Whichever side you stand on, there are good arguments on either side. I personally am pro-choice. But look at the facts and see which side fits best.

No matter what the decision of the woman is, her decision must be respected and her process of the abortion must be protected. In the end of the day it should not matter who is right and who is wrong, what matters is the woman is protected and have her own rights. Pro-life and pro-choice will never come to an agreement but we all are fighting for the same thing many people just don’t realize it yet.

In 1970 a woman named Norma McCorvey also known as Jane Roe filed a lawsuit against the Dallas Texas District Attorney Henry Wade, Wade represented the state of Texas in one of the biggest Pro-Choice lawsuits in the country. The lawsuit came about when Roe discovered she was pregnant with her third child, unable to care for another child Roe seeked an abortion and was denied in her hometown because under the laws in Texas at that time abortions were only legal if the pregnancy was the outcome of rape, incest or if the pregnancy threatened the mother's life. The outcome of this drawn out lawsuit was in favor of Jane Roe. The US Supreme Court, in a 7-2 decision, affirms the legality of a woman's right to have an abortion under the Fourteenth amendment to the Constitution(CNN). This case proves why women should continue to exercise her right to an abortion. Women who are denied abortions are more likely to fall below the poverty line forcing them to become dependent on government assistance. Ending an unwanted pregnancy allows women to not feel forced to deal with the male involved in the pregnancy. Some women become pregnant and feel obligated to have a prolonged relationship with the father causing years of mental and emotional abuse.

Whenever you think about the option of abortion after finding out that you are pregnant then of course you will get in the phonebook or look up the closest place to be able to get such an procedure done. I’m pro-life for the obvious reason people are pro-life...I believe the unborn child is a life and the most vulnerable and innocent of human beings at that. As a living being an unborn child would have an individual right, like the rest of us, to live and must rely on us born folks to protect them. However, I believe that it must often be an unfathomably difficult situation and decision for a woman considering abortion and I have compassion not judgment for her.

Abortion is a two-sided argument. I count myself as pro-life as well as choice. I agree and disagree with both sides. No matter what, I have no right to tell anyone what they can and cannot do with their own body. I may believe every abortion is killing a human being, but I definitely think there are situations where you should have an abortion. If you are raped, unstable, a result of death, or being too young; I definitely believe you should have an abortion. If you are getting an abortion as an excuse or you do not feel like using birth control, you should not have an abortion.
