Abortions Abortion should be a given right to women in the United States. I believe that abortion should stay legal because laws against abortion hurt and even kill women, women who receive abortions are less likely to have mental health problems than women whose abortions have been denied, and a baby shouldn't come into this world unwanted. Firstly, legal professionally-performed abortions reduce injury and death caused by illegal abortions. According to Daniel R. Mishell, Jr., MD, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, before abortion was legalized, women would try to perform self-abortions by using coat hangers, knitting needles, or radiator flush, or by going to illegal …show more content…
In 1972, there were 39 maternal deaths from illegal abortions (CDC). By 1976, after Roe v. Wade legalized abortions nationwide, the number dropped to only two (CDC). This shows that when abortion was legalized that the number of maternal deaths dropped by a significant amount. Second, women who receive abortions are less likely to have mental health problems than women whose abortions have been denied. In Sep. 2013 a study comparing the mental health of women who received abortions to women denied abortions found that women who were denied abortions felt more angry and felt more regret than the women who had abortions which reported "less relief and happiness". The same study also found that 95% of women who received abortions "felt it was the right decision" a week after the procedure. Thirdly, a baby should not come into this world unwanted. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment stated that accidental pregnancies are connected with birth defects, maternal depression, greater risk of child abuse, a high risk of physical violence during pregnancy, and lower rates of breastfeeding (CDC). 49% of all pregnancies among American women are
Abortion should be illegal in the United States of America. Since abortion was made legal in 1973, almost 57 million babies have been murdered by abortion. At the rate of 2,900 babies aborted a day, or 1,058,500 a year, the death toll is averaging almost double the deaths caused by the “leading cause of death” in the U.S., heart disease. These are 57 million people, who could've grown up to cure cancer, or found a reliable and abundant clean source of energy. Also, women who have had abortions almost always are psychologically affected in some form or another. These affects include, but are not limited to; regret, anger, guilt, shame, sense of loneliness or isolation, anxiety and depression, and suicidal thoughts or feelings/actions. In fact,
Approximately 1.6 million murders are committed legally each year. While the mutilated bodies of the victims lay waiting in infested dumpsters to be hauled off to a landfill, the murderers are in their offices waiting for their next patient. This is the murder of an innocent child by a procedure known as abortion. Abortion stops the beating of an innocent child’s heart. People must no longer ignore the scientific evidence that life begins at the moment of conception. People can no longer ignore the medical and emotional problems an abortion causes women. People must stop denying the facts about the procedure, and start hearing the silent screams of unborn children. The argument by the pro-abortion
Females under the age of eighteen are not emotionally ready to carry a child and when they are turned away, it can lead to mental health issues. Those who are denied abortions feel regret, anger, and lack of happiness. 95% of women who have had abortions feel that it was the right decision (should procon). Since the legalization of
America is a land of choices and rights, a land of opportunities and freedom but where do we draw the line? On January 22, 1973 the US Supreme Court made a historic decision that a woman has a constitutional right to an abortion during the first six months of pregnancy. Before the Court’s ruling, a majority of states prohibited abortion, although most allowed an exception when pregnancy threatened the woman’s life. The Court overturned these state prohibitions in Roe v. Wade. The Court ruled that states could restrict abortions only during the final three months of pregnancy, a stage when medical experts considered the fetus capable of “meaningful life” outside the womb. The abortion debate has become one of the most divisive political
America has always been a really liberal place to live. This means that people can feel free to have there own opinions and voice though thoughts and opinions. Though what can come out of this are many arguments among people. One of the biggest things people are arguing about today is whether abortions should be legal or not. Over the years abortions have been affecting our society. Many people believe that abortion kills a baby before it even has a chance to live. It is a practice that should not only be medically wrong, but morally wrong as well.
The debate over abortion started on January 22nd, 1973. Abortion was declared a fundamental right by the supreme court; the decision on Roe vs. Wade was 7 to 2. In the U.S. various states have restrictions on abortion but it is currently legal. Should abortion remain legal? Yes, abortion should remain a legal right because: women need reproductive rights, it’s not murder, and legal abortion is safe.
Oliver Wendell Holmes was born on March 8, 1941 and died on March 6, 1935. He was a vigorous political figure during his life time. He served as associate justice in the US Supreme Court from 1905 to1982. He was a great political philosopher of his days and his ideas are still remembered.
A study found women who had an abortion had significantly higher levels of anxiety and depression up to 5 years after the abortion. They also learned that the women are 3 times more likely to commit suicide than the average person and 6 times more than those who have the baby (“Should Abortion Be Legal?”) Abortion leaves many women emotionally scarred (Kumar 194-197). Abortions affect not only the mothers but the fathers as well. As much as 51.6% of fathers have had regrets after the abortion, 45.2% felt sad, and 25.8% experienced depression. Having an abortion can have a negative impact mentally and physically on a woman's life after the abortion (“Should Abortion Be
A woman may become depressed because of the lost of her child and the psychological effects of an abortion have cause anxiety attacks. Doctors have even discovered a disorder in woman because of an abortion which is known as Post-Abortion-Syndrome Disorder (Lawlor). Guiltiness is also another emotion a woman may feel after an abortion and could even lead to thoughts of suicide. An abortion is selfish and it is not fair for an unborn child which deserves life, not death. In the United States, since 1973 over 46 million legal abortions have been performed (About Abortion). Those babies that were aborted could have been the next president or a scientist that solved world issues or friend to anyone. A whole generation has been wiped out because of
Abortion has been a controversial topic for many years now. Abortion is the removal of a fetus or embryo from the uterus. The reason behind this controversy is whether or not removing the fetus is murder. Countless women make the choice of abortion in the result of not being stable enough to care for a child or simply don’t want it. Abortion should be legal considering not every woman has the money to support a child and the mental health to raise one either, and in the case of rape or incest, the victim should have a choice of whether or not have a child they did not ask for.
It is often argued that women have a right to control their own reproductive capacity and that abortion is a vital tool for doing this. Proponents of this view state that nobody has the right to force a woman to undergo a nine month pregnancy, with all the accompanying discomfort and serious health risks, if she does not want to. Some say that the right to abortion is absolute and it is acceptable to use it as a method of birth control; other pro-choice advocates disagree but believe it should be available in cases where pregnancy will endanger the woman's health, the fetus has a severe congenital defect or the pregnancy resulted from rape or
On average, almost 6 million women become pregnant each year. 1.7 million of these women have abortions (www.religoustolerance.org). An abortion can be defined as destruction of a fetus or an unborn child while the child is still in the mother’s womb. This can be done by anyone from the mother herself to clinics set up specifically for the purpose of performing abortions. Abortion is one of the most controversial subjects that has been continuously debated for many years. There is one major group on each side of the issue. Someone who is pro-life is against abortion completely. Someone who is pro-choice believes that a woman should have the option of having an abortion if she chooses to. Abortion should be
1.Abortion is a hot topic these days. We hear about it on television and on
For the first time in 15 years, more Americans are pro-life, rather than pro-choice. 51% of American men and women believe that abortion should be illegal in America, rather than the 42% that believe that it is appropriate for abortion to remain legal ("Poll: Majority of Americans Are Pro-Life for the First Time"). Those that are pro-life believe that a child is born into this world with a purpose, and if a pregnancy results in an abortion, god’s plan for the child in this world will be disrupted (D‘Silva). A fetus has a heartbeat 21 days after being conceived, so anti- abortion protesters believe aborting a fetus with a heartbeat is murder. Pro-life supporters also have concerns for the mother’s health, seeing as abortion can cause
Twenty-one percent of all United States Pregnancies will end in an abortion. Abortions were banned up until 1973, when the Supreme Court case of Roe v. Wade₁ made it illegal and not long after made them a constitutional right for all women (BBC). The US Congress then banned the use federal funds to pay for abortions, except when the mothers’ life would be endangered by a full term pregnancy or in cases of rape or incest. As a result seventeen states now use public funds to pay for abortion for some poor women (U.S. Abortion Statistics). There are many different views on this topic, some for abortion saying it should be legal and then there are some against abortion saying it is murder and should be illegal. Women have the rights to their bodies; if women are not ready for motherhood, we should not force them to have the child they have conceived.
