Zoos are Internment Camps for Animals As claimed in the LCA article, ”Animals in zoos are forced to live in artificial, stressful, and downright boring conditions”(User, Super). Evidence shows time to time that animals are being affected by zoos. There are many things hidden behind the facilities, that many people do not know about. The animals are being held in conditions that no animal should ever live in. Even though some zoos do focus on helping the animals, they are not as beneficial to the animal because they are not provided with the proper care and attention they need and zoos do not try to fix their problems. Many zoo animals are not provided with the sufficient care and attention. There have been various reports of abuse and neglection toward the animals. In some cases people were able to capture videos of these terrible actions, and were able to use them as evidence to show the authorities and audience who are not aware of these atrocious events occurring. In the article,Undercover Investigations Reveal Abuse of Tiger Cubs at Roadside Zoos, the author revealed the different ways the owners of a roadside zoo would abuse the tiger cubs. For example,”At Tiger Safari,Maximus , a white tiger cub was dragged, choked, tossed and suspended by his legs and tail ”(Amini). First not all animals are treated equally in every zoo. But most importantly, they will always be going under this treatment until everyone is aware of the kind of care these animals are going through behind those cage doors. Or unless the authorities get more strict on how the zoos need to care and handle those animals, then maybe there could be a change in the lives of the animals. With research anyone can learn and educate themselves of what they can do to try to help those animals in
Zoos may seem fun to visit and exciting to see the animals; but what you don’t see is the suffering and depression that lies in these helpless creatures. There are many arguments whether or not zoos are good or bad, and if they should be removed or kept. Several think that zoos should be abolished or at least very much improved, due to animal cruelty. While, others want zoos to stay because it is beneficial for the animals and people. I strongly believe that zoos aren’t good for both the public and animals for numerous reasons.
There have been a lot of problems with animals in zoos. It has gotten to the point where zoos are hated and looked upon as a places of animal torture. Are zoos really that bad? Turns out, they are. They do not have enough space, they do not allow the animals to communicate with each other, and they sell the animals to cruel circuses.
Most people go to zoos with the expectation of a happy family and enjoying a day staring at wild animals that we do not see very often except of a screen. They see zoos as a place to experience something different and to take their children to. However, few people know of the mistreatment and unfit conditions the animals are forced into. On the contrary to popular belief, there are many zoos that care so little for the health of the animals the zoos are actually the reason the animals become ill. For the truth is that animals in zoos are mistreated, neglected, and even abused because of the awful situations they are in. In this essay, then, we will go over the excruciating conditions and the abuse these animals face everyday of their lives
Zoos are terrible places for animals that do not belong in cages. Zoos include roadside zoos, petting zoos, and smaller animal exhibits. The animals they have are meant to be out in the wild not locked up in cages. The areas are not big enough for them to be animals. They are held in captivity with nowhere to go because if they try to break out, they are going to get shot down. Animals are not meant for entertainment. If you want to see an animal there are many websites with live cameras in order to see it. Also, if you want to see animals the animals should have a free range area and the people ride around in cars to look. The people should take the chances of getting beaten, eaten, trampled, etc. Zoos make money off poor animals who have no choice
Zoos, or any other place alike, do not take adequate care of their animals. The habitats. that are constructed to mimic the creature’s nature one, often fails in meeting that expectation. The spaces dedicated for the animals are cramped and not regularly maintained. [stat about that here] In addition most
There are flaws in the measurement for animal welfare in zoos. According to Dita Wickins-Drazilová “the usual criteria for measuring for measuring animal welfare in zoos are physical health, long life, and reproduction” (Wickins-Drazilová). There are more factors of animal welfare than the usual criteria. Many zoos claim to have healthy animals that live long lives and reproduce, but that is not merely sufficient enough for proof of good care. A long life in suffering, for example, is not a great way to live, and it is possible for animals to live long
Zoos sometimes even take endangered or hurt species and nurture them back to health, but the amount of human interaction animals get in the zoo environment can be extremely harmful in the long run. By becoming more comfortable with humans, animals a lot of the time become more vulnerable to poachers and predators (Cite). Also, students at Oxford University studied the effects of zoo captivity on species and found many animals suffer reproductive, health, and behavioral problems after being held in captivity (Evans). And on few occasions animals, such as snow leopards and ring-tailed lemurs, adjust well and can even thrive in captivity. However, a lot of the time the only reason we keep them in captivity is for the education of humans, maybe it’s time to educate another way, perhaps with some of the technology we are loaded with
Firstly, wild animals in captivity is inhumane. Animals in zoos are often thought of as objects instead of living beings with feelings and emotions. An example of a situation that was inhumane and proves that zoos care more about income than animals took place at the Copenhagen zoo where an 18-month-old, healthy giraffe was killed because it was considered useless for breeding. According to an article by www.peta.org “Even large, well-known, and popular zoos engage in unscrupulous practices, such as dumping unwanted animals or taking animals from the wild.” Because most of these animals were raised or born in captivity, they were not able to develop the necessary survival skills needed to survive in the wild.
One reason why zoos are not good for animals is because they confine animals to tiny spaces. “The treatment of animals held in captivity has changed over history, as the understanding and views of their well-being has increased” (Goodman, 2016). Zoos might have been a good idea in the beginning, but they are not suitable for animals today. “118 animal deaths occurred at AZA-accredited locations, with 10 happening due to human error, including the gorilla Harambe's death at the Cincinnati Zoo” (Thoet, 2017). Zoos are seen as a fun environment, but people do not know what goes on.
60% of animals in zoos have marks on their heads because of them constantly banging their heads against bars. Wild animals suffer everyday from being caged in zoos and other facilities. The conditions in which they are kept are horrific and cause immense suffering to the animals. (The facts about animals in zoos). These attractions create a false sense of security about the care and welfare of animals. These animals are stuck in an unfamiliar setting usually alone with hundreds of intense, loud people staring and surrounding them. (Zoos Pitiful Prisons)Oxford University observed animals in captivity and established that animals such as lions, cheetahs, polar bears and tigers endure the most documentation of psychological stress.
When I was a little girl, I was always eager to have a day out to the zoo where I could get up close with hundreds of beautiful animals. I heard many interesting stories of animal life and how hard they have to fight in wild life to survive. Zoo, under my eyes, was a wonderful land where animals were rescued and taken care off in a safe beautiful place. It was much more fun when I figured out animal could do many interesting things as human did as monkey could drive bicycle, and dolphin can dance in the water. However, with the development of media, many truths have been revealed, and zoo is not simply as wonderful as I thought. Monkeys were not born to drive bicycle; dolphins do not naturally dance in the water. They all have to go through severe process of training to do trick and entertain for human. Then, it becomes even more complicated to make up mind what are the real effects of zoos on animal and human. It is definitely a valuable source for public studying. Many zoos were established as a new home for endangered animal. However, it is undeniable that many zoos have taken away animal freedom, as well as torture them for the purpose of entertainment and commercial.
Animals need to be in their natural habitat, instead they are in an area too small and not the same. Animals are more likely to get diseases spread from other animals. By being in captivity it can cause animals physical and emotional distress. Animals should not be kept in zoos because animals deserve to be in their natural habitat away from physical and emotional stress of zoo life. Stress and lack of exercise affects the animals’ health.
According to Statistic Brain, “A total of about 751,931 non endangered species and 1,041 endangered species of animals are kept in zoos around the world ”. Many of the non endangered animals are capable of living in the wild by themselves, but the more time they spend in zoos the more they will forget about how to survive in the wild and they will also gain many other negative effects. Zoos are more harmful than helpful because they restrict animals to enclosed habitats, they weaken the animals primal instincts, and they cause the animals stress which lead to mental and physical health issues.
Zoos can lead animals to be weaker once released into the wild. Because the animal’s environments are small and confined, they can’t hunt or use their instincts like they would in the wild. This especially harms the animal children because they end up raised in the organized and planned environment, so they are almost unable to hunt. Although some zoos don’t treat their animals this way, the majority of zoos do and it can harm their population in the wild.
Some zookeepers abuse animals. Takepart.com says that, “A judge later ruled that keepers can't use electrical prods on the animals.” Some people are mistreating the animals of a beating and starving them, sometimes even to death. PETA.org.uk states, “There is also strong evidence that many zoos “dispose” of “surplus” animals, either by killing them or selling them to unethical exotic-animal dealers. In one British zoo, the carcasses of slaughtered animals, including baboons and endangered deer, were left to rot beside bins.” Sometimes even animals abuse each other. Slate.com says that, “Tom, a gorilla… was moved hundreds of miles away because he was a good genetic match for another zoo’s gorilla. At the new zoo, he was abused by the other gorillas and lost a third of his body weight. Eventually, he was sent back home, only to be sent to another zoo again once he was nursed back to health. When his zookeepers visited him at his new zoo, he ran toward them sobbing and crying, following them until visitors complained that the zookeepers were “hogging the gorilla.” Animals also don't get enough room in the zoos. Many animals travel and need large territories such as lions, elephants, zebras, gazelles, and many more. Nhptv.org states that, “Some large animals, like mountain lions, moose, and brown bears, need large home ranges.” Animals don't get enough room so they don't get it who exercise every day.
