Many people consider New Hanover County as a nice place to live. The website 10Best.com recently selected the waterfront in downtown Wilmington as the best American waterfront. However, all nice places have issues under the surface just like alligators living under the surface of the water in the Cape Fear River. Over two million people become dependent on prescription pain pills and street opioids every year in the United States . Opioid abuse is extremely prevalent in today’s society. Many public health professionals are calling it the worst drug crisis in the nation’s history. (DeGarmo, 2017) Opioid abuse and addiction is an issue that goes beyond adults, it is plaguing juveniles as well. Juveniles are feeling the negative effects of this issue in many different ways. Some are watching their friends or family go through addiction, some have lost loved ones, and some juveniles are addicted themselves. I volunteered at the EB HOPE drop-in center which is located in East Bridgewater. The mission of the drop-in center is to provide resources to those affected by opioid addiction. They have an abundance of resources including retreats, rehabilitation centers, support groups, as well as faith based healings. They also have various support groups for family and friends of those addicted to opioids.

Julian Lambert is a case manager for the newly open office of Eastern Carolina Human Services Agency, Inc. in New River shopping center. Although he is not a professional social worker, he is well aware of the needs of the population and the importance of providing and linking them with resources. He gave me useful information and his insightful perspective about the resources available and missing in the community, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the area.

It is important to note, Cumberland County is located in the southeastern part of Kentucky on the Cumberland River; with a population of only 7,000, the community’s population on the decline, and it is clear to see there are underlying problems for this decline. The county is faced with the highest unemployment rates in the state at 12% and low household incomes. There is also high drug abuse rates amongst teens and a lack of proper education as well as a dropout rate that is 5% higher than the state and national average Also, there is a lack of job opportunities in the community, which then in turn causes for people to move and pursue work elsewhere. Residents clearly live hard and stressful lives with so many issues facing the community; therefore, they can benefit greatly from the community center and programs as well as have better life opportunities that are both fun and

The mission statement for Reflective Treatment Center is “To provide comprehensive treatment services to adults dependent on Opiates, while ensuring recovery and integration back into family and community life through increased socialization, emotional and vocational skills. We are here to make a difference in the lives of the individuals we serve” (Reflective Treatment Center, 2016). Ms. Barnes indicated that the purpose and goals of the agency were included in the mission statement and that she found it well put. She also believes the agency to be meeting its goals which are providing comprehensive treatment services to adults with opiate dependency. Description: Daniel is a nonprofit organization serving at-risk youth from the community through a wide variety of programs. Some of the services offered include: therapeutic foster homes, independent living skills and housing for homeless youth, juvenile dependency intervention, residential treatment, and community based treatment through the dependency court system which is contracted through the Department of Children and Families. The agency also provides counseling, medication management, and behaviorist services to the children it serves.

After thorough investigation of the homeless population in Newark, the problem that is going to be discussed in this paper is substance abuse within the community. On a broad level, one of the biggest issues facing New Jersey today, as a whole, is the increase use of illegal drugs and substances, specifically heroin. As a direct consequence of drug use, 797 people were reported dead in New Jersey in 2007 ("New Jersey Drug Control Update - White House", 2013). This number is larger than the 719 New Jersey citizens who died from motor vehicle accidents, or the 446 people who died from firearms in that same year ("New Jersey Drug Control Update - White House", 2013). In 2010, close to 17,000 New Jersey citizens were reported to the state for attending abuse treatment centers strictly for heroin dependence ("New Jersey Drug Control Update - White House", 2013). This trending heroin “epidemic” across the state close to doubled the amount of citizens reported for attending treatment based on marijuana addiction ("New Jersey Drug Control Update - White House", 2013). In a related study, that same year, Essex County comprised 10.0% of all substance abuse in New Jersey ("Substance Abuse Overview in Essex County", 2011, pp. 3-15). This was more than any other county in the state ("Substance Abuse Overview in Essex County", 2011, pp. 3-15). Being an agent for Star Boat, Tom frequently concluded contracts with a number of suppliers for acquiring certain parts to manufacture boats. Smooth Sailing was one of the suppliers. Tom resigned from Star Boat in July 2012 upon being offered a better position in Star Ferry. However, he acquired 4,000 parts from Smooth Sailing in August and manager of Smooth Sailing did not notice that in the contract Tom indicated his signature as “manager, Star Ferry” and thought they were dealing with Star Boat as usual. When Smooth Sailing later notified Star Boat to make payment, Star Boat wanted to ratify the contract.
