In 1910, Europe was the city that rested upon a hill. It was home to countries that spanned around the globe. Britain’s colonial empire, in the making since the early 1700’s, still remained intact. France, now recovered from the Napoleonic Wars, is a thriving republic. These two countries were indeed the most envied of them all. Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, and even Russia desired to colonize through imperialism. However, these countries in the East were too late. Britain and France had claimed the majority of the last “unexplored” continent that is Africa. Despite the fact, Italy scavenged what was left of the continent. Britain, along with France, conquered the majority of the continent. This is best seen in document F. The population of the British colonies was a resounding 400,000,000 people. This is an absurd amount for the time period in which we talk about. Germany, a late participant in the Scramble for Africa, only had 12,000,000 citizens reside in its colonies. Countries such as Russia and Austria-Hungary did not even get to participate and had 0 colonies. The greed of imperialism was indeed the spark that ignited World War 1. Prior to the war, a great military build-up occurred, which also played a factor in the starting of The War to End All Wars. The militaristic policies that were employed by the leaders of European countries only intensified feudal debates. It infuriated countries like Germany. In document D, German Chancellor, von Bulow says, “We don’t want to step on the toes of any foreign power, but at the same time we don’t want our own feet tramped by any foreign power.” This kind of thinking is what lead to the massive military buildup.
