Question: Discuss the causes of the American Revolution. Which cause was most important? Why? Mariah Gutierrez History 1301 Professor Harris September 29, 2013 The American Revolution was a major war within America that got the United States their independence and showed others that they were not a weak nation. There were many causes that lead up to this war and had a great effect on it. The first war we see is the French and Indian War (1754-1763), also called the Seven Years War; this war was fought between the French and the British over territory.1 The British were defeated by the French and therefore became an ally with the Indians, bringing them into the war.2 …show more content…
The colonists desired to have their own nation, but the British government continued to place laws and rules over them so they would not lose rule over them. First they were taxed for printed papers they used, but they did not submit to that law. Next they were being taxed on imported good, which they also denounced and began to not take the imported goods from the British (boycott). The colonists were tired of having the British government ruling over them and not allowing them create their own laws and systems. They finally took a stand and had created a war that won them their independence. The end of the war was a time for rejoicing for the Americans proved that they could stand up for themselves and are a nation of their own. They no longer needed any one to rule over them, they were able to rule over themselves. From this war the Americans created many laws and documents pertaining to their independence and laws to help them better their nation. America is what it is today due to this war! Notes 1. The American Revolution was fought from 1775-1783, the war happened because of the tension that was building between Great Britain and their thirteen colonies. From 1607 to 1763, Britain gave the thirteen colonies benign and salutary neglect. Even though the colonists lived under the Mercantilist doctrine, they were still allowed to prosper while under Great Britain’s authority. The French and Indian war changed their relationship.Great Britain going to war with France caused them to accumulate a lot of debt. They thought heavily taxing the colonists would help them pay off their debt. The colonists were unaware of the taxing until Great Britain started taxing them on tea, which they drank daily. This caused their taxing plan to backfire. Great Britain 's relationship with the colonies developed into an armed conflict that caused the colonists to declare their independence in 1776. “The first shots heard around the world” of the Revolutionary War were supposedly heard at Lexington and Concord. France entered the American Revolution on the side of the colonists, the French were persuaded by Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin in 1778. France helped the Continental Army to get the British to surrender at Yorktown in 1781 causing the Americans to win their independence; the fighting didn’t officially end until 1783. Revolutionary War was started and fought over economic, social, and political issues.
One of the most important reasons the people wanted to break away from English rule was to not have to pay such a great amount for taxes. After the French Indian War or the Seven Years War, the English began to tax the colonist extremely high to pay off war dept. The English fought the war on the colonists’ land, so they believed that the colonist should have to pay for English’s war dept. The first set of taxes they placed on the colonist was the Sugar Act. The Sugar Act was passed in 1764, and it was a high tax on sugar. Another act passed was the Stamp Act, it was passed in 1765, and this stated that all paper would have a tax stamp on them. The next large tax was called the Townshend Act. It was passed in 1767, and this was a tax on every imported good that the colonist received. Every tax was raised to the max and the colonist were suffering because they could not afford the things they needed. This lead to revolt everywhere in the new world.
Many know the American Revolution as a war of independence between Great Britain and the thirteen colonies in the United States. During this war, the thirteen colonies with the help of the French and others won their freedom from Great Britain. According to history the actual war started in 1775 and ended sometime in 1783. Although the war was fought in phases there were several factors that lead up to the war long before 1775 and a few immediately preceding 1775. The revolution was inevitable based on the long-term causes. The short-term causes are what solidified the war.
The American Revolutionary War was caused by the political disagreements between Great Britain and the American colonies. Most of the Americans initially didn’t want to completely separate from England but wanted to regain the rights that Parliament had taken away from them. England made war unavoidable with its unwillingness to negotiate, heavy taxation of the colonists that violated their rights, and strict trading policies.
When the thirteen colonies were created, the colonies depended greatly on England in order to survive and make something out of this new land. England not only helped them economically but also in time of war against the French during The French and Indian War. It meant that England had to spend extra money helping out the colonies and also with any necessary equipment required to fight in the war. Back home, England had been fighting a war for around 100 years already, so helping out the colonies just added more to their expenses. England wanted to earn some of the money they had wasted, so England decided to raise and put new taxes on the colonies. The colonials thought some of these taxes were outrageous and began getting furious at England. This was one reason for the tension that grew between the colonies and England. Other reasons like the Boston Massacre, in which British soldiers shot and killed 5 colonials, and the Intolerable Acts, led to more anger and tension between these two. All this things eventually led to the colonies declaring war on England. I believe the most significant cause to why the colonies declared war on England was because of the
The American Revolution, also known as the Revolutionary War, was a war that had raged on for eight years stemming from major political differences of opinion. Though, the fighting and the discontent between the two opposing forces, Americans and British, had been developing for years before the first shots ever had gone off to start the revolution. The reasoning for the tension between the two is traced back to one of the main catalysts being the Stamp Act that was imposed on New England colonies, then to one of the last being The Boston Tea Party that ended with British war ships being sent to Boston with attempts to keep in under control.
In 1775, the British came to new lands and created the colonies. The colonies had gone through many events that all lead up to the American Revolution. One of the events that pushed the Americans to revolt against the british; the stamp act which forced a stamp on every legal document. In a resolution, John Adams protested against the legality of the stamp act(Document 1).”...The Stamp Act...A very burdensome, and in our opinion unconstitutional tax is to be laid upon us all.” The quote explains how it is a very unneeded tax. This caused the American Revolution by putting in the minds of Americans… ‘These British fools are taking advantage of us’ and thats exactly what was put in the Americans mind. In a
The French and Indian war began in 1754. This war lasted from 1754 to 1763 and moved forward in three phases. Britain and France plus other allies here and there fought for control of North America that nearly lasted nine years. The American Revolution was sparked by numerous events that occurred during this war. It began over a dispute over land. This war was the fourth colonial conflict between Britain and France, in which it was the only one that began in America. A majority of soldiers argued over control in the Ohio Valley. The reason the Ohio Valley was so important was because it provided traders access to cities and ports on the East Coast. This is why some people refer to it as the seven years’ war.
There were many thoughts and ideas that the colonists of America had, but there was one thought that surpassed the rest. Revolution. Now this word does not mean war, though many may think that immediately after hearing such a powerful word. Revolution means change, and that was what the colonists needed. Though they still had the "rights" that were provided abroad, these rights were not the same in the colonies. Also the taxes that were being placed in the colonies had no help to them, but only to the king. With many changes needed to be made for America to be great, it was time for the colonists to act.
My thesis is how did the American Revolutionary War help America. The American Revolutionary War helped America by the United States, France, and Spain negotiated the Peace of Paris in September 3, 1783. The treaty recognized the United States as a new and independent country. The war also helped America because The Declaration of Independence was signed in July 4, 1776. This is the thesis of my essay.
In 1776 and the preceding years there was great unrest in the English colonies of the New World. This war, known as the American Revolution, lead to the making of the United States. There were many events that led to The American Revolution. One of which was The Great Awakening, a time of religious revival and return to the Puritan Church. Similarly, The Enlightenment, which was period of using logic and reasonable thinking was a cause of the R. In addition to The Great Awakening and The Enlightenment, the French and Indian war was another cause of The Revolutionary War. The French and Indian War was a war fought by the British against French who allied with the Natives. The Great Awakening, The Enlightenment, and The French and Indian war all set the stage for the eventual American Revolution against the British.
The United States of America is one of the most powerful nations’ in today’s world. According to an article on National Geographic, United States of America is geographically the third largest country in the world (national geo). It occupies the middle portion of North America, which lies between the countries’ Canada and Mexico. At present, United States of America is generally divided into six main regions, namely, New England, the mid-Atlantic, the South, the Midwest, the Southwest and the West, comprising of fifty states in total (national geo). But, has United States of America always been the same? Did it have the ‘power’, which it has today, from the beginning? The answer to these questions is a definite no! According to the article on National geographic, “the United States has enjoyed a meteoritic rise in global importance since declaring independence from Britain in 1776”. But how did America gain its independence? How did it gain its power and importance in the world? A series of events took place in the history of America, which has made it the nation that it is today. All these events can be put under one common term, known as the ‘American Revolution’. I believe that the American Revolution has ignited the feeling of patriotism in the Americans and
The American Revolution was caused by the unique nature of the American Colonists and their society in contrast to their relationship with the English Government and peoples. Life in America was not a life of leisure. American colonists had worked hard to cultivate their lands and develop their towns and cities. Rural life in the American colonies consisted not only of farmers but tradesmen also prospered. (Handlin. 24) By 1763, the American Colonies were spreading west. The expelling of the French and the Spaniards in 1763 opened lands of opportunity for the colonists. American colonists who settled in the new lands and the New World were a, "fresh breed of humans,
Before the leading battles in the Revolutionary War emerged, very little of the colonists wanted full independence from Great Britain. Toward the beginning there were little problems between the colonies and Great Britain. A lot happened though between the years of 1763 and 1776 that would help push the colonist. The colonist were taxed unfairly and they were watched over as if they were children. American colonist found themselves fighting with Great Britain regularly. Everything was wrong in the colonies. The first major American resistance to Great Britain was after Parliament passed the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was a law that required all colonial people to pay a tax on everything paper. This included legal documents, bills of sale, pamphlets, and even playing cards. After months of protest, Parliament voted to remove the Stamp Act in 1766. After the Stamp Act, came the Tea Act in 1773. It was a bill designed to save the British East India Company by lowering its tea tax and granting it a monopoly on the American tea trade. The tax being so low allowed it to undercut tea smuggled into America by other traders. Many colonists viewed this as a taxation tyranny. In response, colonists
The major causes that lead up to the American Revolution were lack of American voice in Parliament, harsh taxes, and their own passion to earn freedom from the British government. According to the book The American Revolution, written by David Burg, Britain imposed high tax on American Revolution because they needed money to pay for the French-and-Indian-War. British wanted Americans to financially help them because British believed that they are doing this to protect Americans. British needed lot of money for the war because the war lasted not only for few years but nine years. To gain money from colonists, British proposed the Sugar Act on 1764 and Stamp Act on 1765. British wanted colonists to only buy products from them, not from other countries, which lead them to impose tax on all non-British imported goods through Sugar Act. With Stamp Act, British could earn money through selling the stamp since every public and legal documents must had a British Seal, or Stamp on it. Not only colonists were mad about the three pence tax on imported goods and Stamps, but they were also mad that the acts were enacted without the consent of the colonists. According to the article “The Spark of Rebellion” written by Douglas Brinkley, colonists used the slogan “No Taxation without representation” in a wish to gain a proper representation for their colonies. They believed that Sugar Acts, Stamp Acts and other laws that British enacted to gain money were illegal since there was no proper
