Everybody will go through a time in their life that really shapes who they will become. Whether a person is facing their biggest fear, going to great lengths to impress someone, or accomplishing something they never thought was possible, they will quickly realize that sometimes, a situation does not always pan out the way it was originally thought to end up. One is never really grown up until they realize this. Therefore, the most important part of growing up is realizing that a situation might not always turn out the way people originally thought it would. In the story “Utterly Perfect Murder,” the main character, Doug, realizes that his childhood nemesis was not really as scary as he originally thought he was. A quote to …show more content…
The last example of a situation not turning out the way it was originally thought to have turned out takes place in the short story “On Being 17, Bright, and Unable to Read.” In that story, the main character is very intelligent, but he has dyslexia and he did not know how to read. It seemed as if his life had no purpose, but he soon proved everyone wrong. A quote that supports the claim that the situation turned out differently than expected is, “I’ve gotten honors some marking periods, and I’ve won a letter on the cross country team” (Raymond 81). That quote supports the claim because since he could not read, many people did not believe in him, but he proved everyone wrong and acquired many awards. In conclusion, a situation may look like it is going very good or very bad. However, one shall not draw a conclusion too early because a situation still has time to change drastically. For example, Doug could have decided that Ralph was too scary for him to confront, but he did not assume anything. Instead, he went to confront Ralph and realized that he was in a much better physical state than Ralph. In the second story, the narrator did assume that a girl liked him and he got his heart broken. In the last story, a teenager could have assumed that since he could not read, that he had no purpose. Instead, he decided to work hard and he ended up with several awards. There are many things to learn while growing up, but
E.E. Cummings explained “It takes courage to grow up and turn out to be who you really are.”
Growing up is a journey, to be specific it 's a journey in a maze. We go around in different directions in hopes to find out who we indeed are. Left to right in every direction we run into things that change our mindset and by the end of the maze, we are entirely different people. Most mazes have doors; open one door new beginning, shut another end of that chapter. Specific events in life alter our young minds, and we tend to grow from these experiences. Personal and social encounters come our way and turn us into adults. Milkman in the novel Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison goes through various incitements and awakenings that force him to change his ways and enhance his
In the article, “The Genocidal Killer in the Mirror,” Crispin Sartwell focuses more on power and is concerned with evil. Sartwell states that whether you believe you are among the evil people or not, you are deeply malicious or a “moral hero” or just profoundly self-deluded. He continues to point out the timeline of all genocidal events that took place over 500 years, however, he doesn’t list all of the genocidal events during the current timeline. Theodore Dalrymple, the writer of “Just Do What the Pilot Tells You”, argues that some people think a determined opposition to authority is principled and romantic”. However, Dalrymple maintains that in his experience as a doctor, people who do not obey authority most of the time have unsuccessful relationships and a tumultuous life. He also emphasizes this by asking a lady on an airplane if she believed in authority, she states that she disagrees and that authority is restraining. He then challenges her by asking if it would be all right if he went to the pilot and asked if he could fly the plane. The lady refuses and states that he does not have the training to fly an aircraft. At this point, Dalrymple predicaments that we gave the pilot authority to fly the aircraft through his training.
Doug finds himself in a very difficult situation and he cant decide whether to do what he knows is right and not except this foolish trade, or what he wants to do because of his longing for Ralph’s friendship. When Doug begins to him reminisce about these memories we see he’s changed a little bit. He hated himself as if it was his fault back then and now as things have gone on that anger has built up substantially. The difference is now that anger has redirected almost completely at Ralph. He tries to solve this conflict within himself by blaming everything on Ralph. This only makes things worse by reversing that anger to Ralph causing Doug to decide to kill him.
The National Geographic film, A Portrait of a Killer, examines the types of stress that living beings can endure, and how it can thus affect the rest of their bodies. Severe chronic stress can lead even lead to the destruction of brain cells. Dr. Robert Sapolsky is a neurobiologist of Stanford University who has been researching stress for over thirty years. In order to study stress and its implications upon nonhumans, he went to Africa to study baboons. This species has only three hours of stress caused by eating, and the rest of their daily routine is consumed by about nine hours of free time. Much like Western society, baboons socially stress out one another, as they have social hierarchies to regulate how them interact with one another.
There is more to life than just physically growing up; it’s about the experiences we gain from them and how we mature from these experiences. It makes us mature and has definitely taught me a thing or two and what I’ve learnt is, our lives are defined by our choices and the pathways we choose to take. They might be good or they might be bad.

The major theme of Andre Dubus’ Killing,s is how far someone would go for the person they love. It is important to note the title of the story is killings and not killers, for the reasoning that the story does not just focus on two deaths or two murderers but rather the death of marriage, friendship, youth, and overall, trust.
Andre Dubus’s “Killings” is a very interesting look into the psychology that goes on after a person has been killed. The story discusses the ramifications of the original murder, the subsequent actions of “justice,” and finally what is left when it is all said and done.
Murder on a Sunday Morning is about an African American boy who was wrongly convicted of murder. He was only fifteen years old when his life changed forever. While first watching the documentary, it seems to the audience that Brenton Butler, the convicted boy, is guilty. Mr. Stephens, husband of the victim, Ann Stephens, claims that Butler came over, tried to take Anna Stephens’ purse, and then before she could comply, he raised his gun and shot her in the face. Sadly, Mr. Stephens was the only eye-witness, which is a major red flag, as he is connected to the victim. After being forced by the detective, Butler confesses. Once defense attorney, Patrick McGuinness is involved, he has Butler tell the court of his innocence and thus beings the criminal proceedings for Brenton Butler.

This serial killer was chosen because this serial killing pair is the most infamous English serial killers duo in the 1990s. Fred and Rosemary West were not convicted of all the murders they participated in; however, they were sentenced to life imprisonment. Also, this case is interesting because Rosemary West, to this day, does not claim to know anything about the murders even though she has victims that survived her attacks and have spoken against her in court.

There are things that happen when we are growing up that change us when we are grown. There are things that change us forever. Every human being is different, and there is a reason why . All of us had a childhood and all kinds of experiences some good, some bad, some full of joy but also others very painful. 3. The mass murderer kills due to a warped sense of love and loyalty, a desire to save their loved ones from misery and hardship. Typically it is a husband/father who is despondent over the fate of the family unit. Sometimes, as in the case of the Manson family, the murders are done by a cult group being obedient to their charismatic leader.
