Analysis Of ' Perseverance ' By Maya Angelou

In “My First Lifeline” written by Maya Angelou, the author vividly explains a lifeline thrown to her in a time of need. The essay became a reflection of Angelou’s childhood and presented the reasoning behind some of the traits she acquired. Angelou utilizes vernacular speech, figurative language, and sensory details to aid in expressing the first lifeline thrown at her.

In the book, Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Patillo Beals, all of the character present were true warriors at heart. Between the students that attended Central High School and the family members that had to go through the struggle of being hated in their own town, they did not give up. I believe that I am most like Melba because I never give up, I have had similar events happen to me in my own school, and I have a family that is just as supportive as hers.

Maya Angelou’s “Alone” is an incredible narrative poem that readers can relate to. This poem is about realizing that no matter who you are, or where you come from, or how much money you have, you need other human beings to survive in this world. In life you need people who love you and help you through hardships. The poem is easy to read and understand because of the simplicity of the diction. Angelou uses the phrase, “That nobody, / But nobody / Can make it out here alone,” to get her point across. The fact that she uses the phrase to make a point allows the reader to look past the trite. The tone of the poem is yearning. Angelou brilliantly uses assonance, alliteration, figurative language, and AB, AB rhyme. The meaning of this poem is one of great importance.

The film Cinderella Man shows multiple examples of perseverance. Perseverance is when someone is determined to go through tough obstacles and difficulties, no matter how hard they seem to be. If someone were to face obstacles that seem impossible, they could go through them, or persevere, and try their best to overcome it instead of just giving up. If someone was to have perseverance, they would be persistent and continuously stay in the state they are, no matter how hard their problems are. Cinderella Man has multiple examples of this because the main character, James J. Braddock, perseveres through the difficult time that is the Great Depression. He took risks to fend for his family and never succumbed to his negative feelings when he faced problems that would feel almost impossible. James Braddock had shown examples of perseverance in the movie Cinderella Man.

Both Maya Angelou of "Champion of the World", and Amy Tan of "Fish Cheeks" write anecdotal short stories which express their isolation from the dominant Anglo culture while delving into deeper detail as to why they feel such a great sense of alienation. Although both stories take place within different settings and time periods, a primary commonality they share comes from within the detachment they feel as minorities within a larger, more dominant community. Each author expertly employs literary devices such as description and narrative style within their writing to express the primary underlying message of their anecdotal stories; however, placing emphasis on the descriptive aspects of a story and setting more often seems to give the audience greater clarity and insight into the situation and setting. In Tan's story, objects of familiarity and a myriad of overwhelming are described in intense detail. Therefore, Tan's heavy emphasis of description throughout her story resonates more strongly with the reader. By thoroughly analyzing the text, we can observe how and why the literary element which the authors place more focus on is an important aspect toward expressing the theme of cultural isolation, as well as to how Tan's usage of description give the audience more insight as a result.

There have been many people who have changed history for the better. Melba Patillo Beals is one of those people. Her efforts to integrate Central High School made her a very important person in the fight for equality. Despite the hardships and discrimination that she had to deal with, Melba persevered and integrated Central for a year. She sacrificed her normal life for the furtherment of equality. In “Warriors Don’t Cry,” Melba Patillo Beals presents the idea that emotional strength, faith, and determination are necessary character traits in the fight for equality.

In the book, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, Salva shows that success is achieved through constant courage. Some people think that success is achieved through patience, but Salva shows success is achieved through courage and bravery. Salva is nervous about the gun shooting going on around the school, but he was brave enough to go run out of the bushes. “Salva saw all this with one glance.

What is perseverance? Perseverance is steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. Gary Paulsen showed perseverance by running away from home at the age of fourteen and traveling with a carnival, Paulsen acquired a taste for adventure. Paulsen wrote two books and one movie which showed perseverance.

The Canadian Dictionary defines perseverance as “Steady persistence in adhering to a course of action, a belief, or a purpose; steadfastness”. In the novel Eric Walters, Walking Home, his main protagonist, Muchoki restates perseverance by sticking to his goal and never giving up. Due to political disturbances between ethnic groups, his father dies in a fire caused by a mob, leaving Muchoki, his little sister Jata and his mom with no other option but to flee and find shelter in an overcrowded refugee camp. Things do not get any better because his mom dies from malaria. Leaving Muchoki and Jata all by themselves, the last thing she told them was an old Kamba story; the story talked about a boy and a girl who run away from their homes to stay together following a string that will guide them to their new home so that they could be together.

In the excerpt “Champion of The World” adapted from Chapter 19 of Author Maya Angelou’s ‘I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” The author makes an outrageous claim about African-Americans based on the victory of Iconic Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis against a White contender during a title match in the late 1930s. Right at the very end of this piece the Author makes a bold statement in response to the actions of visitors who were temporarily in town during the fight. Their decision to make arrangements to stay in town overnight and possibly avoid unwanted harassment (typically by their unsatisfied Caucasian counterparts), prompted Angelou to suggest that because Joe Louis continued to defend his Championship title in the fight he proved to be the

There are many times in life when giving up feels inevitable, but it is important to recognize that perseverance is imperative to achieving success. Laura Hillenbrand, the author of the novel Unbroken, tells the story of Louie Zamperini, an Olympic runner and World War 2 veteran, and his perseverance through the horrors he experiences throughout his life. Including, but not limited to, his past as a runner and what he experienced serving as a bombardier in the U.S. Airforce. Hillenbrand illustrates the idea that perseverance is essential when presented with conflict.

"The Champion of the World" by Maya Angelo is a story about the critical fight between Joe Louis and the white boxer. Angelo did a great job of showing how important the fight was to the entire black culture. The first sentence is a great example of this when she says, "The last inch of space was filled, yet people continued to wedge themselves along he walls of the store." (104) The fight wasn't just about winning. It was about fighting for their freedom and being treated as equals among the human race. You see, in this point of time, the African American community was looked down upon and abused. They never thought they would see a colored person fight to be champion of anything, let alone champion of the world.

“Still I Rise” is an inspiring poem written by Maya Angelou, she delivers a powerful message from within to provide her African American ancestors an opportunity to rise above segregation and racism. Maya Angelou expresses her pride throughout the poem and describes different hardships in her past. Angelou incorporates her past experiences, powerful views, and over comings while also expressing the tone regarding her pride, feminist values, strong confidence, and close ties with African American ancestry to create a timeline of events that have allowed her to push forward in life despite obstacles from her and her ancestor’s past. R.R Champion of the World – Narrative Reflection: Narrative Essay Maya Angelou, in her essay, “The Champion of the world” identifies how the actions of one can have a rippling effect on an entire group. To me Angelou’s experience caused me to reflect on my own groups and experiences mainly the unity and strength of my family. Once, in the summer of 2011 my family experienced a legal issue regarding my uncle. My uncle had lost his temper and, in the heat of the moment had hit my grandpa and broke a couple of his ribs.

These are words from the Maya Angelou who is a black poet and a civil rights activist who loves to tell the story about her past. Maya is known for being one of the voices for the black community in tough times. To some she was known as a poet, to others she was a blessing. Through the use of imagery, Maya expresses the importance of taking pride in your culture.
