Sherman Alexie book “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part – Time Indian” is a comical yet heartbreaking true story of an Indian teenage boy living on the reservation trying to figure out his own identity. Throughout the book the reader can see the identity struggles that the main character Arnold Spirit Jr (Junior) faces. Being on the reservation is both a home and a place Junior is ready to leave. Through Juniors illustrations and…… The beginning of the book begins with Junior giving the reader some background information about himself. “I was actually born with too much cerebral spinal fluid inside my skull” (Alexie, p.1). He even states “I wish I were magical, but I am really just a poor-ass reservation kid living with his poor-ass family on the poor-ass Spokane Indian Reservation”, (Alexie, p.7). Drawing cartoons in a way helps Junior escape the poverty that he is living in for a little while. Being poor is hard on any child. Like Junior, they realize that they do not have the other things that normal more wealthy kids have, and probably will never have. The poverty that Junior is living in is just another struggle that Junior faces with finding his identity. He thinks that because you are Indian you are destined to be poor. He believes that he cannot do anything about it and cannot prevent the unsuccessful life he is bound to have. I think as a teacher witnessing someone facing the same problem as Junior, can work to boost the students’ self-esteem by praising their academic success more than what they own. If the teacher shows that they really care about the student succeeding that student, no matter what living situation, will see that someone cares and try to succeed in school. When Junior transfers to Reardan a white school off the reservation you can see the conflicting aspects of identity and belonging. This part in the book is where Junior starts to describe himself as a part time Indian. “I was half Indian in one place and half white in the other place” (Alexie, p.118).
