Richard Blanco is a Cuban- American poet who was given the oppurunity to write an inaugaration poem for Barack Obama's second swearing-in. Li-Young Lee is a poet who has written numerous amounts of work. He is a writer of Chinese heritage, but he does not classify himself as an Asian American poet. According to an article titled, “Li-Young Lee,” Li-Young Lee refuses to classify himself as an Asian American writer because he strives to be a “global poet.” This statement demonstrates that Li-Young Lee uses poetry as a means of addressing universal concerns. He writes about experiences or lessons that are personal to him; however, these are experiences and lessons that people all around the world can relate to. Li-Young Lee specifically writes about his childhood memories and family. A particular poem that reflects his personal life and poetic writing is, “The Gift.” In “The Gift,” the use of vivid imagery, free verse, and a distinct tone portrays Li-Young Lee’s poetic style.

The tone of the poem changes as the poem progresses. The poem begins with energetic language like “full of heroic tales” and “by a mere swing to his shoulder”. The composer also uses hyperboles like “My father began as a god” and “lifted me to heaven”. The use of this positive language indicates to the responder that the composer is longing for those days – he is nostalgic. It also highlights the perspective of a typical child. The language used in the middle of the poem is highly critical of his father: “A foolish small old man”. This highlights the perspective of a typical teenager and signifies that they have generally conflicting views. The scene that is presented in this poem would make you think the son is just reliving a time he had with his father. For a reader to figure out the message that this poem has they must know how to look further than just the words in the poem. Throughout A Story, a poem written by Li-Young Lee, many literary devices are used in order to portray the complex relationship that the father and son have. The last and one of the most important things to look for during a poetic analysis is the very small summary given at the beginning of the poem. For this poem, the summary was “What happens to a dream differed?” shown at the beginning of the poem. If you really think about it, this is summarizing the whole poem and what its about. Later, it goes on to say things that begin with “Does it” or “Maybe it,” which are both beginnings that are talking about what might happen to a dream deferred.
