Analysis: Should Students Have To Wear School Uniforms

Uniforms violate our first amendment. It doesn’t let students be themselves in the way they want to dress. There are pros about having uniform, but there are more cons because clothes don’t break rules. Students should not be required to wear school uniform.

First of all, mandatory school uniforms deny students rights, stated in the U.S constitution. In the first Amendment, it states, “congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech. Recently, a student at Riverside Middle School, wore a pink shirt with a message on it that stated, “ #TeamTanya” He was spreading awareness for his mother, who had breast cancer. With school uniforms, this student would not be able to spread awareness for his mother. Not only it would be against what the U.S.A. stands for, it would be uncivilized and send a bad message to other countries around the world.

Why do some schools require kids to wear these dumb uniforms? There’s no Individuality at all, this just makes more laundry, and kids don’t gain independence or confidence by looking like everyone else. Public school students should not be required to wear uniforms because they make everyone look the same, they are costly, and they may not accommodate all sizes needed.

Should school uniforms be required in public schools? There are many reasons to get school uniforms. It is proven through statistics that school uniforms may decrease the amount of crime but also increase student safety. With uniforms fighting in schools dropped by 51%, sexual offenses depleted by 74% and drug possession went down by 69% (M. Sue Stanley). Student uniforms are all the same, which helps the students and teacher conserve precious class time by not having to re-enforce the standard dress code. Having the same clothes as everyone else can be upsetting but, TeenVogue stated “there are tons of ways to amp up your standard issue getup” (Teen Vogue).

Controversy over school uniforms is not a newfound issue. Children wearing uniforms dates as far back as 1222. Most parents and students alike agree that they should have to wear uniforms. I agree in that uniforms can help see students see each other through the same eyes, enhance the attendance level, and make preparing for the school upcoming school day easier.

In the article “Do uniforms make schools better”, Marian Wilde states that in the past decade, school, parents and students had clashed over the issue of regulating student attire. In the 1980s, public schools were often compared to Catholic schools for no reason. So some of the public school decided to adopt the school uniform policy. In 1996, President Clinton provided momentum to the school uniform movement in his 1996 State of the Union Speech. President Clinton said “ If it means teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear school uniforms.” There is some pros and cons for having school uniforms. Some pros for school uniforms would be to help identify intruders easily, prevent gangs from forming on campus, and increase a sense of belonging and school pride. Some cons for school uniforms would be violating a student’s right to freedom of expression, making a student a target for bullies from other school, and it’s an unfair additional expense for parents. School uniforms shouldn’t be required at schools, especially at Kailua High School.

Having school uniforms is like trying to fix a broken window, it’s expensive, not enjoyable and leaves you unhappy. Although school uniforms get you dressed faster, Students oppose the uniforms and feel that the school uniforms are uncomfortable. School uniforms have almost no effect: Attendance rates, academic performance, and exam results are the exact same without school uniforms. School uniforms should not be mandatory because they’re expensive, don't allow students to be diverse, and don’t stop bullying.

Picture this a person has a daily routine to set out their clothes for the next school day. That person had a lot of homework one night and forgot to pick out his or hers and it he or she has slept in and he or she is going to miss the bus soon. If this student had a uniform they would have not miss the bus instead of deciding what to wear. Another scenario of school uniforms is that a student with an low income family can not afford the nice clothes that their peers have and is teased and taunted for it then it is bullying. If schools enforced a uniform code it would decrease bullying by wardrobe because the victim and the bully is wearing the same attire. For years, there have been hundreds of debates about whether students should wear uniforms or not. Many schools agreed with the idea and have already required school uniforms, while others are still considering it. Some say that school uniforms represent discipline and instill school pride, but others think that it is not creativity and comfortable. Despite that there are still arguments about it; school uniforms have increasingly demonstrated their importance and influence in many ways. Students should have to wear uniforms because it will help students to perform better at school, give students a sense of discipline, lower the cost for parents, and decrease the rate of crime.

Growing up in the public school system, I was allowed to wear whatever I wanted to school from kindergarten till I graduated from high school and that is the way I believe it should be for all schools, public or private. There are arguments that can persuade you to believe that requiring school uniforms is more beneficial to students; however, there are stronger arguments convincing school uniforms not having a beneficial advantage over no school uniforms. It should not matter what a student wears to school, as long as the teacher is teaching and the student is learning; therefore, students should not be required to wear uniforms to school.

One of the most commonly stated reason that uniforms should not be allowed in public schools is that it takes away from letting students show their true individuality. Uniforms put all the students in the same box and do not let them show their personality through their clothes. At most schools, clothing is a big indicator of how a person acts or how their personality is. Some people argue that this helps stop gang violence at a school or makes everyone feel equal. Although these may be true, uniforms still do not let kids be themselves. The main thing wrong with today’s society is that teens have been put in boxes for a very long time so they do not know how to be themselves and think for themselves. Uniforms help this because they make everyone alike and do not give kids a chance of being themselves. Without uniforms, students will be able to show their personalities through clothes and it will make them feel more comfortable and more likely to step out of the box that they have been put in.

Did you know that uniforms take away the 1st amendment from students throughout the world?? The 1st amendment says”Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” So basically this means that the government or your school boards are violating your rights to the 1st Amendment. School boards are generally allowed to create and enforce dress code programs within their districts, they must do so without violating the constitutional rights of students. According to the 1st Amendment uniform schools are violating the rights of students. Therefore, I strongly agree that uniforms should be banned.
