Analytical Essay: Beowulf
“Heroes are made in the hour of defeat. Success is; therefore well described as a series of glorious defeats” according Mahatma Gandhi. In Robert Zemeckis’ movie the character Beowulf, the son of Ecgtheow, was a mighty warrior. His tribe is from the Geat and his lord is Hygelac. He arrived at the Heorot after the rumors spread about the atrocious monster Grendel haunting Hrothgar and his mead hall. The poem Beowulf , is from an christian perspective of the young, vigorous and self confident Beowulf on his path to greatness. Beowulf and his glory were mentioned throughout the text. Beowulf is a young and great warrior his name and exploits has been heard from all around. In the text, he depicted as someone very caring about his reputation and very self confident through his entire life journey. After his arrival, Beowulf encounter Unferth which revealed a lot about his character. Unferth, envious of his kinsmen’s admiration of Beowulf begins to taunt the Geat “Unferth, a son of Ecglaf’s, spoke Contrary words. Beowulf’s coming, His sea-braving, made him sick with envy: He could not brook or abide the fact That anyone else alive under heaven Might enjoy greater regard than he did” (lines 500-504). He claims that Beowulf once lost a swimming match against Breca and that Beowulf will meet with defeat for a second time when he faces Grendel in the mead-hall (lines 506-510). He slurs Beowulf reputation because it's his most important possession. Beowulf confronted Unferth in the middle of the audience and explained his version of the swimming race. Beowulf is very serious about his reputation, and didn't let unferth discredited him and his battles in front of the audience. Throughout the text Beowulf is very interested in increasing his reputation and gaining honor. The changes made about the character in movie is in order for the character Beowulf to be more relatable to the viewers. Beowulf was almost divine in the original textand the movie (2005) everything about him was perfect .While in movie everything wasnt perfect he was conceited and often dishonest. Every director want to sell its work,and for it to happen people have to supply what's in demand. Nowadays characters are flawed to create a plot twist to the story and also for it to be more organic and relatable to the viewers. In addition the movie (2007) left us wanting more which can be vary thrilling for an audience because at the end it leave us with with the question of is this going to be a cycle? or is Hrothgar going to end it?. Also it is the most recent which means that the director took idea from several of the old version and made a more interesting plot for a general
