My Learning Style Through the course of my readings about the variety of learning styles and ways of learning, I can honestly state that what I found is there is no right or wrong way of learning and everyone’s style is also your own. There different ways we can assimilate, process and view information. The major determining factor of how well we do this, depends on who is being asked the question and how do they want the answer. In the readings, I have learned that based on who your audience is, will determine how the information is interpreted. Though not everything is set in stone. L. Baumgartner (2015) discusses this her article discussing adult development. She mentions that “humans are active participants in their development, actively …show more content…
It is most often shown that these individuals exhibit strength in looking at things from multiple perspectives. This style tends to work well when alternate concepts needing to be understood and when brainstorming is required, which is an essential task that needs to be done when you work within teams. There is also a strong ability to be creative and imaginative. Albert Einstein, a great scientific mind weighed in on the importance of Imagination saying “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.” (Einstein & Shaw, 2009). Yet, with every positive there is often a negative. Sticking with our theme of scientists, Newtons third law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Divergent being a gatherer has a propensity to watch rather than act, which at times is not the best choice. This fault can cause procrastination and have detrimental …show more content…
My tendencies of second guessing myself are directly describe in the Divergent learning style. Though when analyzing my other identifiable style (the accommodator style), I find a lot of similarities within it. I know it has been said that patience is a virtue, and do I wish I had more of it. I find myself anxious at times, which has led me to make some not so well thought out decisions. Hind sight is AMAZING! I do wish I had a crystal ball. This would aid me in avoiding some simple mistakes that I have made due to my impatience. This is also a typical trait of the accommodator learning
People learn in various ways and at different rates, some learn much from reading and could be considered a visual learner whilst others find it difficult to get anything from reading and prefer to listen, possibly to others explaining, an auditory learner or perhaps they learn from doing practically and could be regarded as kinetic learners, but whichever way we prefer to learn to be effective the learning cycle must be fully completed. We go through an experience, think about what happened, reach some conclusions and put them into practice.
Before taking the Learning Style Inventory, I always felt I was mostly a tactile learner. I would be able to learn in a visual fashion if need be, but I would rather learn and by doing and making mistakes. After taking the Learning Style Inventory, the results definitely supported my initial thoughts. My tactile preference was 14 points higher than my auditory score, but only 2 points higher than my visual. Although I believe I will always will be a stronger tactile learner, my visual learner skills have been improving throughout my college learning experience. Plus, it’s important to note that many tactile learning situations are dependent on visual learning. This means that tactilely learning has been strengthening my visual learning skills.
Throughout my high school and early college career, the concept of a learning style is far from foreign. I have learned of the three main learning styles: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. I have taken multiple tests and found out what my learning style is and that it has not changed much throughout my educational career. Earlier in this course, I learned that I need to adapt the way the teacher is teaching to the learning style that best suits me. My learning style is mainly visual and kinesthetic. However, the questionnaire created by Barbara Soloman and Richard Felder has given me a lot more insight to my learning style. I have learned more about my learning style such as what type of learner I am, how I learn best, my preferred way to
After taking the learning styles assessment it was found that I am a visual learner most of all followed by tactile and auditory. This meaning that I like to see what I am learning, I am able to understand things and later recall what I have seen. I honestly have to say that I do not agree with these results; I say that because after reading and just knowing how I am, I believe my best type of learning is through tactile, I have been this way since elementary school. When you are a tactile person you like to learn and pick up the information best through touching and doing things, you are very hands-on. Versus someone who is a visual learner just needs to see it or read it. Some of the characteristics a tactile person has is completely me; such as I am always doing something, I like to be hands on, when I talk I move my hands sort of like I am trying to act out what I am saying, I always have my legs going or am swaying side to side, like flashcards to study with, and am always chewing gum.
In the learning styles test, it resulted that I am a visual learner. I believe that this is true because I would rather to see a demonstration of what I am supposed to do so I can be able to do it by myself later on. It is effective for me when I am studying because I can remember what I saw as opposed to what I heard. Also, I get distracted easily therefore if a class session tends to be long and only involves discussions and talking, I tend to space out a lot. The results says that visual learners should always be sure to look at the study materials and make use of flash cards, which I tend to do all the time. In the value assessment section, I did the Rokeach Value Survey and this was a great one. It helped to prioritize terminal and instrumental
I recently read in the book ‘Skills for Success’ by Stella Cottrell, that you need to take responsibility for your own learning and recognise your own learning preferences. This is a valuable thing to pick up on as being able to recognise how you learn best can help you complete a task to your best ability, and taking responsibility for you own learning rather than replying on others shows what a resourceful worker you can be. After reading this I realised the best
There are several factors that have and still do influence on my own individual learning process. However some have impacted greater than others and they are as followed:
In order to effectively teach students with different learning styles, I will most likely be using this website for ideas. Education.com has everything. They tell you how to know what styles your children are better with and give you some activities that you can use to reach all of those students. On their site, you can find specific activities for any grade, or subject, up through high school. For example, I will be teaching third grade so I would go and look under third grade and then go under whatever subject I need, such as math. Once there, I just scroll through and pick an activity that allows student to interact with each other while practicing the subject and having fun. I can also use
The learning style inventory demonstrates that mode 3 and 2 are my weaknesses. This reveals that I lack in understanding how theory affects my daily life as well as asking questions in order to understand a concept. To improve in mode 3, I need to start setting goals for myself. I can accomplish this by creating a goal map to see the goals I want to achieve, such as joining a new club, and tracking my progress. In mode 2, I need to supplement any assigned text with other books such as business magazines and articles. As a result, I will understand the key points in my
After completing the Discovery Wheel and the Learning Style Inventory assignments which are presented by the text book Becoming a Master Student (Ellis, 2006, pp. 78-82), I discovered that I should trust my instinct now more than ever. I’ve always felt most confident when I had a chance to implement my knowledge and understanding in a lab or a real life setting. I learned that facts, figures, and examples are important parts in the way I learn. Breaking something down into smaller units and examining these units individually is something I enjoy doing, but that is not my preferred learning style.
From doing the Learning Style Inventory, I learned that I learn better when I write things down and when I have a visual of the information I am learning. For my writing style way of learning, I found I should take notes. When the professors give us notes I should write them in my hand writing. I just need to be able to read my notes because I write so fast some times.

Personal learning styles are highly complex and unique to specific individuals. It is often difficult to pinpoint an exact learning style. Though there are different categories, we often fine tune them to our own abilities. By examining our traits and tendencies we create a clearer understanding of how we process and learn information. With careful review, I have developed a specific analysis of my learning characteristics, including an evaluation of skill levels. Based on what I have recently learned and know from experience, I have also devised a structured plan for improvement of time management and study skills.
Therefore, I think these two learning styles fit me like a glove. Reflecting on my professional history of twenty years managing people in a variety of different environments an situations, have called for these learning styles to be used. Even though I did not know I was actively using these learning styles, I can now see where they played a big part in my success in my career. I have always needed to think on my feet and adapt to changing environments to please customers and employees alike. Another example of where I have successfully used these learning styles in my organization, drawing, and creativity in how I would handle new unexpected situation at home and work.
What is a learning style? Well a learning style is the way a person tends to learn best. It involves your preferred method of taking in, organizing, and making sense of information, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (2012). Some people prefer to learn by doing and touching, others prefer to learn by seeing, or by hearing the information. Still others learn using more than one learning style. If a person was interested in finding out what their particular learning style is would be to take the VARK questionnaire for learning styles. The most common learning style is the multimodal, but the learner
