Annenberg Ambassador Summary

Education is about growing one’s self and paving the path for one’s journey. Thus, every step of education is important. During my time at USF, I hope to not only learn in a classroom but also outside of the classroom. Learning, however, is not a one way process to learn is to teach, and to teach is to learn. Thus, I aim to share my experiences. I have been active in theatre and dedicated to video production. For others in an LLC, I hope to share my knowledge about these topics and my passion for learning.

“Everyone needs a stretch class,” Mr. Brett Bowers, Homestead High School principal exclaimed. When mid-January comes around at Homestead, Mr. Bowers says this to every student as they are preparing to register for class for the following year. I took my high school principal's advice to heart when I started my college search; Northwestern is my school, a school that will challenge me to be not only the best student possible but also the best person. The Medill School of Journalism has been one of my dreams ever since I started my journalism adventure three years ago, and my desire to be a student at Medill has only grown since I started my quest to find my place in the high education world. Serving others by utilizing the lessons I have learned through my experiences and my talents is how I want to live my life. As a first generation college student, I want to integrate myself in programs or start my own mentorship program where I am able to mentor and give back to students who are first generation college students as well. I feel it’s important to reach out to first generation college students because the amount of pressure we receive with little to no guidance can be discouraging and lead us to feel alone in this process.

In bringing together our interviews, along with current research on academic advising in post-secondary institutions, we will consider student dynamics, needs, advisement issues, and potential ways to effectively advise high-ability students.

After reading Sonja Ardoin’s (2014) “the strategic guide to shaping your student affairs career” book, I read a variety of important content that has allowed me to reflect not only in my fieldwork position, as an Advising Assistant for the Puente Program, but also my current status as a graduate student in the Educational Counseling program.

I put a lot of time thinking about who I wanted to interview for this assignment. Not only did I want to network with other individuals on campus, I also wanted to learn about their everyday experiences. I interviewed Schelzia Ross, who is the Associate Director of TRIO at UW-Waukesha. I chose to interview Schelzia because she works with a specific population of students that I am interested in, first generation.

Interest in media and film studies increased. Full Sail responded by expanding it’s capacity — adding classrooms and additional equipment, and increasing it’s study options. Full Sail experienced continued success, by it’s expansion of specialized degrees in game design and digital media.

As a student at the University of Southern California (USC) Rossier, my contribution to the professional and academic community is to increase critical thinking, develop knowledge and build curiosity and questions among my peers in an impactful manner. I can refine my skills as I perform in a challenging field that I am enthusiastic about. The USC Rossier educational program will guide me towards a fulfilling career that is enticing to my goal of providing a service that improves society and build upon other skills and abilities to create creative and innovative ideas in the field of education.

Going to college and being in a university setting was the first time my perspectives and ideas were broadened. I was able to see the world outside my small suburb, and learned harsh realities, which I was sheltered from my whole life. Social justice advocate, Bryan Stevenson, expounds the idea of getting proximate to issues that one cares about. For me, getting proximate was accomplished by being on a university campus, and learning from the ideas of others, as well as new, first-hand experiences. As I was supported and encouraged in my growth at Loyola, I want to provide the same assistance for other students. Through my years I have excelled at organization and coordination, skills that I hope to apply in order to help students in a university setting. More so, I want to help support students who enter college, those who wish to expand their knowledge, viewpoints, and minds. Higher education would offer me a unique opportunity where I would be able to support students in their growth as a person, while offering encouragement and assistance to students throughout their college

Hinds Community College has undoubtedly enabled me to grow as both a student and a leader during my time enrolled. My passion has always lie in the film and media industry, which made Hind’s film program the perfect choice for me. Before entering this program my skills were unrefined, but now I have been given the knowledge to pursue a career in the film industry with the confidence in my ability to complete any necessary job. Since joining this program, I have become the Media Associate at First Ridgeland Baptist church in charge of all video projects, the sole video contractor for Harmonic Audio and Concert Production which is a multi-state concert production company, the lead contractor for a major theater

This experience has provided me the opportunity to speak with CEOs, finance executives, CPAs, entrepreneurs, politicians, lawyers, and more that have spoken at club gatherings. I obtained valuable insight on the rewards and challenges of these careers, as well as priceless advice on the best route to success in all those professions and things to avoid doing. I was even able to gain tips about transitioning to the UC system from those who’ve graduated from a UC. I have also taken part in numerous trips to different University of California campuses and have met and received advice from transfer students from NVC. That advice ranges from services offered at their school’s transfer centers, managing the quarter system, how to prepare for finals week at the UC level and more. Taking advantage of resources such as these during my time at NVC has played an instrumental role in preparing me for my major and the rigors of the upper division courses that await me at the University of

As a recent graduate of Iowa State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Design focusing on art history and education, the position as Education Coordinator and Advisor at Buena Vista University captured my attention as an opportunity to work with students through educational programming. As a recent college student, I provide a valuable perspective on academic advising through my own personal experiences. I have learned many advisors lack in truly connecting and catering to each student’s individual situation and needs. Buena Vista University, a relatively small area college, provides an opportunity to fully connect and provide personal one-on-one experience all students deserve. Subsequently, students gain the absolute most out of their college education. A large part of my career goals entail helping students of all ages engage, thrive and connect in their own individualized way.

A first generation college student, Roshaunda Breeden is currently the Assistant Director for the TRIO Talent Search program. She humbly earned two degrees from NC State in Psychology and Africana studies and a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Georgia. While on her journey through higher education, Roshaunda has been privileged to work at Spelman College, North Carolina Central University, and her beloved NC State University. San Jose State University is a very large urban campus that has a total enrollment of more than 30,000 students. It is easy to get lost in such huge crowds of students, and even more difficult for shy students, such as myself. I am proud to be a first generation college student attending San Jose State University. Despite its large size and increasing impaction rates, I admire the diversity and resources that the college provides for its students. I applied to SJSU in the fall of 2015 with various goals in mind. However, with a university this large I knew that I would need extra guidance in order to succeed and accomplish my goals.
