The story “Antigone” has a epic and tragic hero like every other story does; and what this will be about is, who represents a epic hero and why they do. In the story, the person who best represents a epic hero is Antigone; and the reason for that is, she shows exceptional amounts of compassion. Through the story, she wants for her brother to get the burial he deserves and goes through many obstacles and suffering the consequences for helping him. One of her quotes was, “Listen Ismene, Creon buried our brother Eteocles with military honors, gave him a soldier's funeral, and it was right that he should; but Polyneices, they fought bravely and dies as miserably, they say that creon has sworn no one shall bury him, no one mourn for him…” (i, i, …show more content…
Antigone's representation of feminism broke all the Greece and her strong characteristics defy the inappropriateness of her nature. Antigone has given strong characteristics in her story and because of this she does not stand around while Creon's unjust law insults Polynices. Her boldness, bravery and, unyielding morals are all extremely important to her role in the play. Towards the story by the end, Antigone was punished for her actions; therefore, she was either going to be stoned to death or be locked in a tomb. Between those two choices she got put in a tomb and trapped there with no supplies. The person to do this to her was Creon and his response to this was, “...Take her go, go! You know your orders: take her to the vault and leave her alone there. And if she lives or dies, that’s her affair, not ours: our hands are clean.” (ii, iv, 710) She was buried for doing what was right and what she was obligated to do. She not only prefers this but her bravery, obstinacy and other traits destroy the image of the weak girl who is powerless to everything. Therefore, this is the reason why Antigone represents the epic
The tragic hero according to Aristotle is a man who is neither a paragon of virtue and justice nor undergoes the change of misfortune or leads to his or her own downfall or destruction through their journey as the characters analyze their “judgment error”. In the play Antigone, Antigone is a tragic heroine who stands up and fights for her moral duties to do what is morally right instead of being loyal to the state even if cost her her life.
The dilemma of identifying the true hero, or heroine, of Sophocles’ Antigone has tortured students for years. It is indeed a difficult decision to make. The basis for this decision is what the reader perceives to be Sophocles’ dramatic issue in this play. The dramatic issue of the play is twofold: Antigone is a fanatic who is driven by her religious fever to bury the body of her criminal brother, Polyneices, against the edict of Creon. In the second part, Sophocles shows how the new King Creon’s refusal to change his decision in the face of adversity is admirable, but at the same time his political morals end up destroying his family. His fall from grace is tragic, whereas Antigone's fall is
Greek drama was written in such a way that the characters are the pivotal aspect of the play. The main characters in Sophocles’ epic play, Antigone, are both very strong personalities, which naturally leads to conflict. Antigone and King Creon both have very intense beliefs and roles in this play that oppose each other, and although there is a family tie, will lead to an imminent tragedy. Antigone is a young women who believes in the loyalty of her family and fears no one and nothing. She is willing to give up her bright future and her life and disobey the edict of her uncle and bury her deceased brother. Antigone displays her heroic characteristics through her fearlessness, loyalty, perseverance, and is therefore the tragic heroine of
In the tragic drama Antigone by Sophocles, in the beginning Antigone was honorable and courageous by wanting to bury her brother even after the high ruler said that he is not to be buried by means of the law even though she knew that she would be punished by Creon. Antigone Develops self respect, full of regret . After losing both her brothers and going through a struggle to bury one of them and after she fulfills what she's trying to do their unbury him Showing disrespect and desecrating the grave of him. She demonstrates the most extreme consequences of civil disobedience.
After reading Sophocles play “Antigone,” it wasn’t hard to see the connection I made with the daring character Antigone. Antigone is a great heroin, yet a tragedy. It is the story of a brave woman who fights for justice from her uncle, Creon. This will allow you to learn more about the characters and what they represent, it also introduces you to the way the characters act, and who they are. The way this story can impact you is beyond your own knowledge. It will open your eyes to what used to be and now, it will show you the differences that we can come to learn.
As Antigone goes through the tragedy of losing her brothers, she also experiences severe consequences for opposing the rule of men in favor of the rule of the gods. Despite the norm of her society, she steps out of her role as a woman and makes a stand for what she believes is correct. Despite the consequences she knows she will face, Antigone stands as a symbol for hope for all those in the Greek society who believe they are being oppressed by corrupt leaders. Looking at Antigone, people to this day view the way she sacrificed her own life to demonstrate who she felt the real leader was a heroic success, fictional or not.
I love rebellious characters; those that dare to do anything for what they believe is right. They are moments away from igniting, engulfing the world in flames, and they tend to value things much more fiercely than anyone else. It’s lovely how people make sacrifices for those they love, though they hardly ever go without consequence. Antigone is such a character, and she sacrificed herself for the simple cause of providing her brother a proper burial in order for his soul to be put safely to rest, and was killed for it. In the play, she is ultimately one that sacrifices the most and opens up our hearts to the true meaning of giving your all.
In “Antigone”, it does not take long for our main character (Antigone) to step outside of the boundaries set against women in society. Antigone’s brothers died in battle as leaders of separate sides, and only one was to be honored after death while the other would remain on the battlefield. A strict ruling was put down by the leader Creon that Antigone’s brother Polyneices be left to rot, which Antigone quickly decides to defy. After asking her sister Ismene for help with the deed of a proper burial (which was declined), Antigone spoke of Creon by saying “Nay, he hath no right to keep me from mine own” (Sophocles, Norton 11th Edition). Antigone breaks the obvious rule of society by going against Creon’s command to not give proper burial to her brother. This was not like many of the women of this time period because women were not seen as equal in the decision making process,
The tragedy “Antigone” by Sophocles illustrates the self destruction of a tragic hero. In this tragedy, Antigone the daughter of Oedipus is faced with the hardships of learning that her two brothers have been killed and only one can receive a proper burial. Despite the Kings order to leave one unburied Antigone decides to give her brother a proper burial and is then dealt the consequences of disobeying the King. The tragic hero of “Antigone” is Antigone because of her pride and defiance.
All the way through this play Antigone is solely being devoted to her family. Antigone is eager to go above and beyond her limits for her family. Antigone is a vital character in this play. Antigone is a very brave, passionate, and willing character that is not enthusiastic about her brother being defiled even if it means her own life. Creon is a character that he knows all commandments and is influenced that he must abide it. Creon then has compassion for Antigone and attempts to get Antigone out of danger and suffering.
Greek tragedies would not be complete without a tragic hero. A tragic hero tends to be the protagonist of a tragedy who had the potential of greatness but is destined to some type of downfall. This is due to a major flaw called hamartia. In Antigone by Sophocles, we see a perfect representation of tragic hero in action. The play is the last of a trilogy by Sophocles, whom two brothers, Eteocles and Polyneices fight for the throne but sadly both kill each other. Creon, the uncle and new ruler decides to bury Eteocles and not Polyneices. This creates tension in the play because one of her nieces, Antigone, is Polyneices sister. The play starts off with Antigone discussing about her plan to bury Polyneices, however Ismene does not agree with Antigone.
One reason Antigone seems to fill the place of the tragic hero, is that her not being able to bury Polynices invokes pity from the audience. Though, that pity gets overshadowed by the pity felt for Creon when he learns his son killed himself, and that his wife committed suicide and him for the deaths. In addition Creon’s hubris when he becomes king, and the loss of basically everything dear to him due to it. Which appears as a common theme in Greek plays, it
Antigone is the tragic hero of Sophocles’ Antigone because of her fierce, stubborn devotion to her family, her overconfident attitude towards herself displaying hubris, and her tragic downfall which leads her to her fate, death.
Antigone was one of the more heroic characters because she stood up for herself and her beliefs in a male dominated society where a woman standing up for herself is highly discouraged. Antigone’s uncle, Creon, made a law that stated that her brother, Polynices, could not have a proper burial because he fought against the city of Thebes. This would be against Antigone’s moral convictions because in her religion, if someone did not have the proper burial, they would not get an afterlife. With that being said, Antigone went against her uncle’s law and buried her brother
Antigone is a courageous girl with high family values. Antigone attempts to convince her sister Ismene to assist her in burying their brother Polyneices. Ismene refuses due to fear for her life if she tried to defy the king`s order. Antigone remains focused on ensuring that her brother receives a proper burial no matter the consequences of her actions. Polyneices is considered a disgrace to the state since he led a siege to his state. The king declares that Polyneices remains should be left in the open, fed on by
