The first chapter of A History of the World in 6 Glasses taught me about the significance of beer in many ancient civilizations. Beer has been around for thousands of years and brought about drastic changes to ancient societies. The discovery and process of brewing beer is something that I had no knowledge of until reading this book. Beer was discovered between the years 10,000 BCE and 4,00 BCE, after farmers had access to grains and began to store them. After experimenting with grains, farmers discovered that wet grain becomes intoxicating after being fermented. What surprised me the most was that the discovery of bread is closely related to the discovery of beer. I never thought that bread and beer were discovered around the same time, because
Believed discovered purely by accident, beer has played a huge role in the history of human civilization. In early civilizations, beer was used as a safe source of water and other nutrients and in later years consumed for reasons that are more social. Although the reasons for homebrewing beer have changed, the process has remained primarily the same.
Around this time, beer could be found in most civilizations and was used for many things, including medicine and payment for labor. With this increase in popularity and usage, customs began to be created around the drink and became significant in society. For example, the custom to toast to someone’s health references to the belief that beer was something the divine would drink and could be used to cure many ailments in an offering to the gods. Additionally, despite countless cases of alcohol poisoning and domestic disputes in present times, beer continues to have a reputation as a drink that is meant to relieve someone of their stress and it is a common gesture to buy someone a drink as to create a friendly atmosphere.
Capitalism is one of the branches that is related to this Article, it means the production and distributions of goods, beers are produced by manufactured industries. First, farmers cultivate the ingredients that are necessary to produce their beer, then farmers distribute their crops to different brewers companies to produce their beer. After producing their beer, companies distribute their beer to all brewer stores, markets, and liquor stores, so they could sell the beer to the consumers. Labors are another example, that economics is related to this article, their skills are essential to the production of goods, also labors are responsible in the production of these goods because they spend hours working hard and using their minds and hands to make sure that the production must be of high quality. Teamwork is an important key to making a high-quality production, labors should work together and help each other to do the job the best as possible. Therefore, if labors make a good quality job that will benefit themselves and the company because their job depends on the effort they put in the products of goods. Consumerism is another branch that this articles related. This branch means the promotion of the consumer’s interests, beer is always consumed by the most of the people. In America, people consume beer to relax, spend a good time or
Nomadic hunter-gatherers discovered beer through gruel, which was made using cereal grains. They started farming these grains to create more beer and even bread. Beer soon became a necessity to the people of Mesopotamia and Egypt. Some ancient writing stated that drinking beer is what separated them from savages. As beer and bread became more popular, it was stored in public containment building which then turned into temples and the bread and beer was turned into offering. Since the discovery of beer seemed magical to the people, they would offer it to their gods for various occasions. Priests would ration out the offering and use them as tax and to pay workers. Soon small towns turned into villages and then to cities as more people took up
Beer is one of those things in this world that have been able to bring folks together for good times and good memories but it also has torn people apart and destroyed families. Not wanting to focus on the bad, but also looking into this fascinating subject a little further; consumption of alcohol has been deglamorized in the military in recent years but looking at the history of the beverage causes one to realize the importance of it since the Middle Ages
By fermenting the juice of pressed grapes, came the production of wine! According to Greek culture, wine was mainly used for religious purposes. Due to it’s scarce nature and high price, wine was suitable for the consumption of the gods. The wine dynasty followed the succession of beer. Although the two were used in religious ceremonies beer was also used for taxes and a form of payment while wine wasn’t. Wine was also developed into a symbol of social hierarchy. The cost of transporting wine through the mountains made wine ten times more expensive than beer, thus leading to only the elite could afford to drink. In Greek culture wine was mixed with water. They did this to ensure you were balanced between the scale of sobriety and drunkenness.
The first merchant to sell tea was Thomas Garway who offered it in both a dry and liquid form at his coffeehouse in Exchange Alley in London. The popularity of the coffeehouse grew quickly and there were more than 500 in London by 1700. By the middle 18th century, tea replaced ale and gin as the nation’s drink.
Up until and even at some points during the seventeenth century, beer was originally relied on in England as a staple part of one’s diet. Englishmen of every class were seen consuming beer, but the working class was particularly dependent upon it.[4] Since it is generally assumed that most beer that was drank was small or weak, it has never been properly acknowledged for its importance as a
Beer has been around for a long time. In fact, it dates as far back to ancient Babylonia. Babylonian society was centered around
An alcoholic beverage made from fermented grapes, “wine has been apart of Mediterranean culture for more than 5,500 years” (Fagan, 14). There has even been evidence found of wine existing for 8,000 years. Not only has it been apart of Mediterranean societies, but almost every civilization around the world has made their own. (Varriano, 10). Giving its diverse background, it has had many different uses over the centuries. Such as, medical healing purposes, in religious settings (i.e. communion), or any other type of celebration. Nowadays people mostly use it as a way to unwind and relax by having a drink for recreation. How did we get here though? The history of production and consumption has a few different stories based on region of origin. In about 6000 B.C., wine emerged from the East. The winemaking process almost every modern culture uses today is: harvesting, crushing and pressing, fermentation, clarification, and aging and bottling. The history of this process dates back to ancient Armenia, where they had a wine press, fermentation process, and put the final product into jars and vases (Fagan, 12). This process was
Coffee and tea have been around for many centuries. Coffee was discovered in the land of Abyssinia or also known as Ethiopia (Pendergrast, 2001). It became one of the many sources to create ideas, a common drink for work or school, and created problems. It is common to buy coffee now from Starbucks, Philz Coffee, or brewing it ourselves. Coffee is use to start out our day and keep us awake. Since discovering coffee, Americans consume it everyday. On the other hand, not only is coffee very popular drink but so is drinking Tea. The discovery of tea is very diverse, it goes through many histories and cultural stories. The history of it started out when the British made tea their representing drink, believing no one else can have it (Mair &
Research has shown that people have been brewing this famous beverage as early as several thousand years before the Common Era. Recent studies claim that the production and consumption of beer was a major factor in the development of civilized society, arguing that the important and often spiritual role beer played in traditional ceremonies and feasts contributed to the development of ritual
Tea is a common drink nowadays and is very popular in different countries and even countries in Europe. However, every country has a different tea culture which has its origins.
Beer is not a new thing. Alcoholic beverages date as far back as 10,000 B.C.E and Sumerians in 2000 B.C.E. had prepared recipes for eight different beer types, ranging from “strong,” “red brown,” and “good dark” (Mauk, 2013). Breweries have created their own recipes, brewed their own beers—some with alcohol, some without—and most recently there has been the craft beer explosion. Perhaps the Sumerian beer could be argued as the first craft beer. Over the past few years, craft beer has been gaining steady market share from the national and international beer breweries, with a focus on micro breweries and brew pubs (Murray & O 'Neill, 2012). Separating one beer from the next is the product itself, and what the product has to offer.
