Valley Forge. In December 1777 in Valley Forge there was 1,800 to 2,500 people who were sick or died and some even quit because of the conditions and their surroundings from (Document A ) . The committee of five congressmen stayed several weeks and was helpful in getting more food and clothing to the soldiers but the way they got that help was when George Washington called a meeting with the congressmen and the soldier and said we all need help this is from (Document B) . Don’t be a summer soldier or a sunshine patriot because all they do is fight when things are good or they leave when times are bad so basically they give up ar make things worse this is from ( Document D ). What we obtain too cheap we esteem too lightly it is dearness
There is a lot of people getting sick, but not a lot of people are dieing. In doc A it says 3,989out of 8,000 soldiers were sick in Feb 1778.That meant that 50% of the soldiers were sick at Valley Forge.Thats a lot of people.1,800 out of 12,000 soldiers died at Valley Forge.(Doc A).Which means there is a 15%
In document D it says “The harder the conflict the more glorious the triumph.” This quote means that if you give it your all and work harder than ever, it will feel even better when you win. If freedom was just given to you, then you would not value it NEARLY as much. All the hard work and brutal fighting will be worth it in the end. “These are the times that try men’s souls” This quote means these men are being challenged, pushed to their limits. It's time to see what they can do. Are they summer soldiers or are they going to continue on and fight through the tough times, and not give up
Valley Forge is where George Washington and his troops sent camp for the winter. During camp the colonists trained hard and gained the confidence they needed to win the war. Unfortunately the lack of food and spread of disease caused many deaths during this harsh winter. If I had the choice to leave or stay at Valley Forge I would leave. I would not want to risk my life or have to suffer through the cold and sickness. According to Estimates of Illness and Deaths at Valley Forge (Doc A), during the encampment about 2,500 soldiers died. That is about ⅓ of the colonists fighting in the war. About 49% of the soldiers get sick. “I am sick-discontented-and out of humour. Poor food - hard lodging - Cold Weather - fatigue - Nasty Clothes - nasty
Thomas Paine’s, American crisis, was such an inspirational essay to the soldiers and other undecided patriots. Paine reveals that, “The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.” In this quote Paine was referring to soldiers alike to myself and the group of the soldiers who quit. I believe that I am no summer soldier. I am a winter soldier and should continue to fight even considering the
Have you ever heard of Valley Forge? Well , through the horrific events of Valley Forge , would you rather quit or stay? The Continental Army, has had several successes such as, Trenton and Princeton. They have gone through struggles depending on the length of their enlistment. Most were enlisted for 9 months. If I was a soldier I would have quit because I would not want to die from a illness, have poor food, lodging , and weather, and I would not want to suffer from the smoke in my hut.
Valley Forge was a winter camp that was 18 miles northwest from Philadelphia that the American Continental Army spent the winter from 1777-78 during the American Revolutionary war. There were many soldiers at Valley Forge, Many of them died, but many of them also lived. An approximate amount of soldiers at Valley Forge was 12,000 in December 1777 and 8,000 in February 1778. While many soldiers were sick or heave died, the remaining soldiers that survived were being trained by General George Washington. Though staying at Valley forge may have not been the right idea. In the “Estimate of illness and deaths at Valley Forge (Document A)” it shows how many soldiers were sick and how many soldiers
Valley Forge is a winter camp for soldiers. It was about 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia that had the not so clean items. If I had a choice to quit or stay at Valley Forge I would choose to quit. Showing the amount of estimates of illness and deaths is one of the main reasons why I would quit. During February 1778 the estimated amount of soldiers is 8,000. The estimated amount of illness during the encampment was 3,989 which is about 50% of the people get sick. (Doc A). Also, 1,800- 2,500 is the estimated number of people who die due to illness. (Doc A). The diary of Dr. Waldo wrote about the conditions of the troop and huts. Many reasons why soldiers are dying because of the harsh conditions such as sickness, poor food, cold weather, fatigue,
Valley Forge was the military camp in southeastern Pennsylvania, approximately 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia, where the American Continental Army spent the winter of 1777–1778 during the American Revolutionary War. Starvation, disease, malnutrition, and exposure killed over 2,500 American soldiers by the end of February 1778.
From the 1900’s through present day, equality and how to handle injustice situations have been hard. People all over the world struggle with being looked down upon or having rights that have been taken away because of racism, which can cause violence anywhere. In order for non-violence to be successful, the movement needs to have discipline, courage, and leadership because how you handle a situation is how you eliminate the problem. Nelson Mandela, Mohandas Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr have proven all of these steps to be true.
Under the leadership of General Washington, one-hundred and fifty-two soldiers were killed and five-hundred and twenty-one wounded. General Washington led his starving and freezing soldiers to valley forge for the winter and led some of his soldiers to dislike his leadership and leave the camp at Valley Forge. Valley Forge was a cold place, and the Continental Army was forced to live in damp and crowded living quarters causing disease to be all over the place. Conditions in the camp were horrible. General Washington's army of approximately twelve thousand had problems getting clothes or food to help them. Diseases such as typhoid, dysentery, typhus, and pneumonia ran rampant. An estimate of two thousand soldiers died in Valley Forge just from disease or lack of food. Morale plummeted and some of General Washington’s men decided to leave the
“Suffering, failure, loneliness, sorrow, discouragement,…” says Brennan Manning, is what most soldiers felt at Valley Forge. The year was 1777, eighteen miles out of Philadelphia. George Washington’s army, known as the Americans, were keeping an eye on the British, for any attack. There is war in Valley Forge, and illness all over the camp. Since I have already served my nine months, I want to stay homeland. I have decided to not re-enlist because for three reasons which are: lack of supplies, weather conditions, and illness/death.
Soldiers walk through the snow, nearly barefoot, leaving bloody footprints behind. This is a picture of the camp at Valley Forge. It was the week before Christmas, 1777, and George Washington’s soldiers were miserable. The bleak winter provided many problems for the soldiers. Outside, it was bitterly cold, but inside the huts that served as shelter, poor ventilation systems led to smoke nearly choking people. In this situation, would you have quit the army, left and no longer participated in the fight for freedom, or would you have stuck it out? I have decided to not re-enlist for two reasons which are the severe lack of resources, and the miserable conditions and spirits of the soldiers.
William Henry Powell portrays “Committee of Congress at Valley Forge” which shows Washington between the Congress and the American soldiers. Washington wrote a 35- page book that portrays the relationship between the Congress and the Americans. This conveys that Washington is convincing the Congress to help the Patriots. Being a good leader, Washington stays calm in times of hardship. Even though some soldiers died, the troops were held together by loyalty to the Patriot cause and their amazing leader George Washington. The soldiers should be confident is their leader, George Washington. The Congress helps the Americans by giving them food supplies from other
First of all, during the battle at Valley Forge disease and famine cover the land. One February first, 3,989 people were sick. Many people quit during this time because they
