The more advanced technology becomes, the more of a toll it has on our daily lives. Yet people are not arguing about this startling new condition." It is my belief that due to the control technology has taken over society, technology is ultimately detrimental to society as a whole.

Today's advancements in technology are leading to a supposed better life and more enjoyable future but, these advancements could pose a problem to humans. The use of artificial intelligence is ubiquitous and refined as it advances by scientists and engineers everyday. With man’s thirst for advancement and technological exploration they ignore the consequences for their actions. In Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, she views technology as monstrous when a creator loses control of his creation. With Artificial intelligence advancing at a rapid pace, society had begun to lose control on technology and its sole purpose; to make life easier by computing and solving problems for humans. “Humanity acquiring all the right technology for all the wrong reasons” (R. Buckminster Fuller). Individuals use digital technology as a way to distract themselves from being in the real world. Researchers have found that digital technology such as phones, ipads, and computers is a constant interruption in daily lives. The digital technology prevents individuals from personal reflection, independence without technology, and face to face interactions.

We all know technology is a good thing, right? Or is it? We can all come up with reasons why technology is helpful or appropriate like we can for a particular medicine. And while some drugs are really great to cure or prevent a disease, sometimes the side effects outweigh any possible benefit. The same is true with technology. Some common negative side effects of technology are kids playing on their phones instead of going outside to play or young people not interacting face-to-face as much as they used to. When we think about war, we think of brave men fighting on land against others. Our society has become entangled in a plight over the benefits and consequences of technology. People are nearly incapable of detaching themselves from their devices and connecting to the world around them. Online, they are able to display themselves in the best possible light and superficially communicate with others creating a false sense of reality and community. The argument that technology is beneficial because it allows people to easily access information and stay connected to people who are geographically far away is valid, but there are consequences for these conveniences that must be taken into account. Technology has reshaped the way people are able to communicate with one another both virtually and in person, it has led to a lack of deep connections, and it has allowed people to masquerade as anyone they choose.

The world’s workforce is in a cycle of re-learning. Those individuals having always performed manual labor jobs, now find themselves scrambling for any hands on work they can find. In one of Wallace’s books, A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again, he does exactly that while covering a multitude of topics ranging from the problems with deluxe cruises, tennis, to even the Illinois state fair. One of the most important topics Wallace covered was the biggest problem in today’s society: electronics. In this essay alone Wallace includes multiple real-world situations, examples, and concepts that explain the world’s irony. More importantly, he discusses irony in relation to modern day television. Television has become the a need for every human beings life instead on a want. The nation's eyes are so super-glued to the United States size television screen that a person can not even fall asleep without watching T.V. first. Television has taken over our society, but in a few ways, for the better.
