In the essay “Better than Human” Kevin Kelly states his thesis hat robots will someday replace humans in the work place. Kelly starts by explaining how the Industrial Revolution has changed the way manual labor is performed as a result of automation; replacing humans with machines. Kelly says that the increasing demand for automation, artificial intelligence has given machines the ability to manage tasks from “manual labor to knowledge work.” (300) Kelly then says that robots will begin to replace blue and white collar jobs such as, assembly, heavy lifting, analytical, and medical applications. We have already seen a decrease in jobs due to automation. Since 2000, the United States has lost 5 million factory jobs, while from 2006 to 2013, manufacturing grew by 17.6% (roughly 2.2% a year). 88% of those jobs were lost due to “productivity growth,” cites a study by Ball State University. The study also found that all sectors grew in terms of productivity by at least 32% from 1998 to 2012 when adjusted for inflation, with computer and electronic products rising 829%. In fact, the researchers found: “If 2000-levels of productivity are applied to 2010-levels of production, the U.S. would have required 20.9 million manufacturing workers instead of the 12.1 million actually employed.” In summary, due to companies’ expenditures in automation and software, the output per U.S. manufacturing worker has doubled over the past two decades. Indeed, “the real robotics revolution is ready to begin,” according to the Boston Consulting Group, who predict “the share of tasks that are performed by robots will rise from a global average of around 10% across all manufacturing industries

However, it would not be fair to only see how people without jobs are affected. Truth is that even who today has a job can be struggling. The fact that U.S is in an economic recession can lead to the closure of industries. Taxes are too high that people is now going after cheaper products to make their salaries last. companies whose prices are somehow higher might be losing clients and the most drastic result would lead to the end of the industry but also the end of many people’s jobs. Now, it is well to say that nobody is for sure, safe from the ideal of unemployment.

Economic – Job loss may become a factor, as well as job creation, although it depends on the sector

One of the biggest controversies with the advancement of artificial intelligence is the debate on job automation. Many people believe that artificial intelligence will advance to become better than humans and replace humans in most jobs. The opposite belief is that AI will be used to improve the standard of living and will be a tool to support humans, not replace them. Job automation has many benefits such as performing more dangerous jobs and complete tasks that humans do not desire to do. Even though job automation has benefits, there are many people who believe robots will take over the job market and the unemployment rate will skyrocket. There are multiple supporting factors for each side of the job automation debate, but the argument will never be settled until AI is further advanced and utilized.

There are many reasons for unemployments. For instance, technology, it is replacing workers. “ Most of these workers need more training before they can get a new job in their field.” Another reason is when there’s less demands it creates a cyclical unemployment. Cyclical unemployment is when “ companies loss too much profit when demands fall, If they don’t expect sales to pick up anytime soon, they must lay off workers.” Examples of this is the “ Financial Crisis of 2008” and the “ Great Depression of 1929”.

Another reason for unemployment is automation of some work routines that replace person workforce. There is a great change going on in employment trend and labor force in the U.S. in 21st century because of aging, diversity immigrants and few other factors and it’s a dramatic change, from 1950 to 2050. This massive demographic change has an impact on the number of people working or people looking for work. In the beginning of 21st century the demand for labor force has increased which is one of the main source for growth and economic progress. Growth rate in population and labor force has changed the trend in employment today compare to 1950. Today more older people are working, its more diversified and more women are involved at workplace. There are going to be significant changes in coming years compare to past 50 years. For example, labor growth rate will be less than what we had in past 50 years. The main reason to this slowdown in growth of the labor force is high tech innovation which is reducing the demand of traditional labor force.

Robots are here to take over, but not by force. In fact, we are letting them in the door without even checking the peephole. A robot can do your job better, faster, cheaper, and with less mistakes and companies know this. We live in a country of late stage capitalism where private companies are trying to squeeze every and any penny out of their expenses and into their pockets. For-profits organizations won’t hesitate to automate their workforce, and why should they? To them, the benefits are enormous. Robots don’t take breaks, don’t get hurt, can’t get sick, and do not require a yearly salary. This is no longer a matter of can we or should we, this is a matter of how our government should respond to this massive change.

Artificial Intelligence is a topic within the public media that has existed for decades, but is now a concern due to the reality of human advancement and innovation in the field of science and technology. Many people believe that computers will become self-aware or sentient and view humanity as a disposable resource and gain supremacy. Reasoning that research on the technology should halt and not become more advance. Whereas others believe they will help catapult research and the economy forward, supporting the operations and innovations the technology offers. The complicated and divided solutions to the debate aren’t obvious, but there are more benefits to improving artificial intelligence than there is stopping it. Therefore, the negative effects people believe will occur can be resolved.

Another reason why jobs are decreasing is because of the advantage that the technology have over us, the more advance the technology, the less workers they need. For example, in Factories everything was mostly done and created by citizens of a nation, since technology is so advance, factories now have more of automation system which means everything is done automatically, this has caused decrease in jobs now that automation is very popular. This also can affect the household because some families will be in financial crises due to unemployment. They are and will be higher rates of divorces and family instability.

Computers are becoming more and more human. In some areas they are superhuman. Computers can calculate complex math problems in less than one millisecond, beat us at games such as chess, memorize entire books and movies in a single glance, compose entire pieces of music, and they can give people information on virtually any subject. Yet, we still don't have a machine that can do the things that computers have done in science fiction movies, such as translate everyday English into Italian, summarize texts, or make us breakfast without burning down the house. But will computers ever become as intelligent as human beings?
