Artificial Intelligence Impact

Artificial Intelligence is the taking over of machines to do tasks that would normally require a human to do. The idea of artificial intelligence has been around for years, appearing in movies and television shows to show what the future might bring. Artificial intelligence is becoming closer to a reality and now society must question if it should have a role in society. Artificial intelligence has many flaws at the moment making it impractical for use until society can address the issues facing it like the loss of jobs and how to control the use of AI.

Zoltan recently spoke at the Artificial Intelligence and The Singularity Conference in Oakland, California. It had AI specialists Peter Voss and Monica Anderson, New York University educator Gary Marcus, science fiction author Nicole Sallak Anderson, and futurist Scott Jackisch. We were fascinated in how artificial intelligence will impact the world. My subject was "The Morality of an Artificial Intelligence Will be Different from our Human Morality."

When someone brings up the term “artificial intelligence”, a variety of connotations tend to arise, connotations that often are unfair or unrepresentative of the true real-world applications of such a term. Due to the incidentally fear-mongering nature of the media, artificial intelligence can refer to something as basic as a robotic arm in a factory, as well as the implied extinction and/or enslavement of the human race as caused by robo-revolution. As of today, however, when applied in the world of modern technology, artificial intelligence is defined as any innovation that performs a task usually completed by humans. The term “Artificial Intelligence or AI” is no longer an obscure term to us. Being surrounded by smart and intelligent devices in our everyday life has made us aware about this technical jargon called “Artificial Intelligence or AI”, which is used to refer to machine intelligence in the field of Computer Science. As artificial intelligence continues to progress, machines are becoming smarter and more efficient than human beings. So, people are getting more concerned and apprehensive regarding their jobs after witnessing their jobs being replaced by robots and machines. Artificial Intelligence replacing human jobs frequently gets media attention and it has been made a huge deal even though it is not. AI gradually taking all our jobs and destroying the economic system is just an absurd and exaggerated claim made by few media outlets and self-proclaimed tech pundits. On the contrary, AI has potential to help us to get better at our jobs and create more job opportunities in the long run.

If you really believe in the future of AI technology— helping us accomplish tasks that humans fail at— then go ahead. It can be justified that AI can do all the medical work that requires precision, and even jobs that workers are reluctant to do. On the other hand, AI technologies may decide our future, and our society does not know enough about AI to continue. To begin with, we have the capabilities to do something for our future, or else, as Nick Bostrom believes that, “...we could be sleepwalking into a future in which computers are no longer obedient tools but a dominant species with no interest in the survival of the human race. Pertaining to the article regarding artificial intelligence, there are numerous beneficial possibilities to aid in U.S. military defense and other necessary involvements. For instance, perfected facial recognition will allow the judgement of crimes to be made easier and less time-consuming. However, there are negative possibilities that tend to create concern in artificial intelligence; with this intention, artificial intelligence is now able to manipulate media such as audio or video to make decisions; if they are able to manipulate their decisions, these robots can threaten or cause damage to the United States’ military alliance. Furthermore, the possibility of these events may occur in the United States or any more developed countries’ military facility or even a battlefield. Although scientists and innovators are tampering with artificial intelligence; if overdeveloped, it is unknown what might occur to U.S. citizens. Artificial intelligence is present in world, imagine what the world will be like in one hundred years. There are two examples that show that artificial life is dangerous, Frankenstein and Blade Runner.. The book Frankenstein is about a doctor who brings a creates a monster and then brings it back to life. The movie Blade Runner is about a man hunting down Replicants. These two examples are so different but they have the same point.

The developing knowledge of artificial intelligence is becoming a fear for scientists around the world because of the power it now holds. Stephen Hawking exclaims how technology will one day surpass human knowledge, “I believe there is no deep difference between what can be achieved by a biological brain and what can be achieved by a computer. It therefore follows that computers can, in theory, emulate human intelligence, and exceed it (Mialet).” As artificial knowledge perpetually grows, it harnesses the power to potentially destroy the human race by means of lethal autonomous intelligence.

For those who do not know, artificial intelligence is exactly what is called, an "intelligence" through a computer that is artificially created by humans. A.I. is defined to be able to learn and use the information it learns to produce "thoughts" of its own, almost as if it were a thinking human. Though many may believe A.I. is just a robot which is able to speak and understand humans, it is much more than that. A.I. technologies are being implemented in smartphones, homes, cars, watches, headphones, and is also being developed to work in many more ways that help give humanity an easier life.

Nick Bostrom, a philosopher and the University of Oxford, states, “...superintelligence could emerge, and while it could be great [...] it could also decide it doesn’t need humans around,” (qtd. in Ford). This philosopher, like many other technology critics, can see the effects that artificial intelligence may have on our future, yet there is always the select group of people who cannot foresee the consequences of their actions. For example, Victor Frankenstein is introduced to science at a young age and when he went to college at Ingolstadt he met Professor Waldman, whom shared a similar scientific interest.

Artificial intelligence has become a big controversy between scientists within the past few years. Will artificial intelligence improve our communities in ways we humans can’t, or will they just cause danger to us? I believe that artificial intelligence will only bring harm to our communities. There are multiple reasons why artificial intelligence will bring danger to humanity, some of them being: you can’t trust them, they will lead to more unemployment, and they will cause more obesity.
