An analysis of the e-rater v.1.3 features revealed that some of them were implicitly measuring essay length (i.e., number of words in the essay) or had a nonmonotonic relationship with the human score. Features in e-rater v.2.0 were created by standardizing some features with regard to essay length, by altering the definition of others to take into account the nonmonotonic relationship 1
with the human score, and also by creating new features. Below is a description, by category, of the 12 features included in the new feature set. Errors in Grammar, Usage, Mechanics, and Style (Four Features) Criterion produces feedback about a total of 33 errors in four categories: grammar, usage, mechanics, and comments about style. Most of these features are identified using natural language processing techniques (Burstein et al., 2003). Counts of the errors in the four categories form the basis for four features in e-rater v.2.0, referred to herein as grammar, usage, mechanics, and style. However, the features actually computed are the rates of errors in the four categories and are calculated for each category by counting the total number of errors in that category and dividing this by the total number of words in an essay. Organization and Development (Two Features) In addition to the various errors, the Criterion feedback application automatically identifies
Welcome to WritePoint, the automated review system that recognizes errors most commonly made by university students in academic essays. The system embeds comments into your paper and suggests possible changes in grammar and style. Please evaluate each comment carefully to ensure that the suggested change is appropriate for your paper, but remember that your instructor's preferences for style and format prevail. As a multicultural educator, I believe that students have different learning styles and needs as a result of their diverse backgrounds. In order to develop an effective student centered educational program, we need an equally effective assessment program. As a strong supporter of balanced approach and learner centered design models, I encourage my teachers to use alternate and informal assessment approaches along with standardized tests in developing their assessments. Standardized tests given by state will primarily help in ranking schools and students. Furthermore, the standardized test results cannot be used by the student’s teacher as it takes two to three months before
Education has been an important part of society for centuries. Over the years it has slowly evolved into what it is today. The topic of education has been controversial since the beginning. It seems as though there is always someone that sees a need for change in how students are being taught and assessed. More specifically, many people think that standardized testing is not an effective way to assess students. While on the other hand, many also believe that standardized testing is the most efficient and effective way to assess people of all ages. The debate over standardized testing has been shown to effect students and the community in many different ways. Standardized assessments have had huge impacts with both teachers and students. Whether one thinks standardized testing is effective and efficient or misdirecting and unproductive it is a big part of the educational system. While the argument may present that standardized tests leads to simulated knowledge, others argue that standardized tests are very effective in assessing students.
This article is about how using standards and assessments do not fully measure the educational quality of the students. It also suggests that the standardized assessments promise something that is not possible with all students. It is important to keep the standardized assessments simple and not go to deep into each subject.

The 1980s brought a new reform movement in education, accompanied by a new emphasis on testing. The effort to improve education at all levels included the use of standardized tests to provide accountability for what students are learning. Minimum competency tests, achievement tests, and screening instruments were used to ensure that students from preschool through college reached the desired educational goals and achieved the minimum standards of education that were established locally or by the state education agency. As we continue in a new century, these concerns have increased.
Using frequently over used words can corrupt even the best essay. I received a grade of C overall. I was quite disappointed in myself and my performance as I know I have the ability to do better. There were four places that should have had commas
On October 5, 2017, I wrote an essay titled “Argumentative College Essay.” On this essay, my Paper Rater score was 84. This is about a B. I got this score because of my word choice, style, and sentence length. First of all, my word choice score was a 3.79 (“lower is better”). I earned this score for word choice due to the quality and quantity of my words, and cliches. Second of all, my style was actually very good. My score was a 106
“Our educational goal [is] the production of caring, competent, loving, lovable people” . The students found in the schools across the United State are the future of America. They are the doctors, teachers, business people, lawyers and many other roles, that will be out in the workforce in the years to come. What they learn in school will impact them immensely; it is the responsibility of a teacher to give students the best education in order to ensure the common good of the future. It is essential for students to not only learn content matter, but also the skills to enable them to participate in a democracy. Due to standardized testing, the emphasis of education has become on score and rankings rather than learning. A standardized test does not look at the whole student, the scores provided are on a very narrow aspect of education. In the classroom, there are countless ways for teachers to assess the student as a whole person not as just a score. Standardized tests scores should not be the sole criteria for determining a student’s academic achievement.
Education has become an essential part of human life it creates an opportunity for people to improve their environment, help others, create jobs, and develop new technology. Having a well stablished education in the United States can only improve the economy and be ready compete with other countries. Even though, the importance of education is well stablished yet the budget cuts to education have always been an issue therefore many students do not receive an adequate education. The current approach for education seems to create and implement standardized test to students to measure how much they are learning in the classroom without considering individualistic differences in students and other special needs.
However, most of all it gives me feedback on what I written (1) and unlike some of the grammar checkers, it explains in simplistic form what errors were made and give suggesons for correcting. Paper Rater couldn't be easier to uses just paste in the text you want analyzed, choose what type of content it is—essay, research paper, speech, etc.— and submit it for review (Webfreebies, 2010, p.1). Within seconds, Paper Rater generates a report that analyzes several aspects of your submission (2). The premium service will allow me to pull the analysis of what sections match my research sources so it can be re-written. I have just learned that PaperRater offers scholorships for their premum service. I am now back in school but retired from teaching and on a fixed income. Even though the fee for the premium service is reasonable, I can’t afford to pay for the service because I must watch every penny spent. I would like to have the premium service for PaperRater, therefore I am writing this essay in the hope of a scholarship for the premium
According to Paper rater auto grader I received a 95-“A” my knowledge of complex words is strong, and my usage of more complex and varied sentence beginnings is in the upper percentile for my education level. The entire report contained information that is beneficial to perfecting my writing styles. I must say, I was hesitant and a little afraid of what my outcome was going to be. After copying and pasting the document and viewing the results, I find this tool to be useful. However, some of the verbiage used in my paper were not translatable and thus caused a few flags. Yet I am satisfied with the ending
Differences in rater behaviors are among the factors responsible for variability in the decision making process(DMP) during ratings. The interference of either the rater rating style or rater experience determines the validity and reliability of the rating score and the rater themselves. Factors related to rater inconsistencies identification and measurement in DMP is necessary to avoid factors underlying variability in decision making process . Several studies have identified rater proficiency level, rater experiences and tasks as its factors. The purpose of this paper is to critically review two articles that contribute to describe insights of rater behavior related to the factors studied. Barkaoui (2010) ‘Variability in ESL Essay
The mistakes and pain that arise from ignorance can never be overemphasized. Likewise, knowledge can never be overemphasized. Knowledge is power. As a result, education (formal or informal) is a potent catalyst that delivers knowledge and provokes world change; it can make individuals become cleaver devils, or agents of constructive change. Even basic education in reading and writing can bring about a world of positive changes in an economy, or an individual’s life. Armed with this knowledge, the average individual craves education, and is willing to invest time, energy, and money in attaining one. Societies have created formalized educational systems to fulfill the educational needs of citizens. In today’s society, education is a competitive business; therefore, training programs are often evaluated in order to ensure that they are productive, relevant and efficient. Formative and summative assessment methods are usually utilized to ensure that educational programs are supplying the quality of classroom education they promise to deliver, as well as to discover areas of deficit within the teaching and learning experience that require enhancement. These assessments are also utilized by institutions to help safeguard their anticipated return on investment (ROI).
