The Berlin Wall For twenty-eight years, the Berlin Wall separated friends, families, and a nation. It was a symbol of the Cold War. The Wall was separating the Eastern and Western side. This wall was a way of separating the three zones controlled by France, Britain and America. This separation occurred after World War II. The Berlin Wall was something of a propaganda disaster for the Soviet Union and East Germany; it showed the communist to be tyrannical in the way they controlled the movement (The Berlin Wall). The Wall was built because of a long lasting suspicion among the Soviet Union on one side and Western Europe and the United States on the other. Berlin was occupied by four nations, which was United States, Great Britain, the Soviet Union and France. Many East Germans immigrated to West Berlin. The German faced and economical problem. They had to accept the terms of the treaty of Versailles. The terms were to give a lot of their territory to places like France and Poland. They had to pay France 6.6M in reparation, they had to reduce their army to 100,000 men and they weren’t invited to the league of nation. However, because the reparations were so high Germany couldn’t pay France, so France invaded the Ruhr (West of Germany) and forced all of the workers there to work, but the workers didn’t agree with this so they did a thing called Passive Resistance (refuse to work). The East German government started building a barrier because West Berlin was a geographical loophole through which thousands of East Germans fled to the democratic west. The communist East German authorities built a wall that totally encircled West Berlin (Berlin Wall). The construction of the Berlin Wall was the night of August 13, 1961. Barbed wire was constructed around West Berlin. Most public transportation were interrupted because of all the construction that was taking place at this
