Feminism and The Big Bang Theory
In the two The Big Bang Theory episodes, “The Tangerine Factor” and “The Cognitive Regeneration”, there are feminist ideals being represented by the characters. In summary of the episode “The Tangerine Factor”, Penny says yes to going out with Leonard but is restless because he is different from the guys she usually dates. While in “The Cognitive Regeneration”, Penny and Leonard are seen dating until troubles arise as Penny’s ex-boyfriend appears. The ideal womanly traits are shown through Penny’s character; however, Penny’s role in the TV show seem to give her more of a feminist approach. At the same time, Leonard’s traits of masculinity are put into question due to his character but also creates a unique perspective on patriarchy. With an analysis of Penny’s character without watching the TV show, her personality would be characterized by her personality just by her looks. Penny, a main character from The Big Bang Theory, is a white, blonde female which arguably has many sexual politics prescribed by society even with just by being female. Basically, Penny would be characterized as sexy, dumb (not as smart as men), dependent, and beautiful just because she is blonde. This explains Melissa Leo’s argument in “Bad Feminist”. Melissa Leo talked about how humans are labeled right when they come into the world by their hair, gender, and ethnicity. With this, most stereotypes were created such as blondes are dumb and women should be paid less
Women have often been stereotyped according to their actions, reactions and behaviors. In the past, they were stereotyped simply for being women. In Washington Irving’s Rip Van Winkle, one can see the portrayal of these stereotypes. In Rip Van Winkle, women can be seen as strong people who control the family and hold it together. It shows women as both positive and negative. Feminists appear to struggle for a balance between the roles of a woman in the society, their limitations, and their opportunities. The negative attributes of feminism are those that go against the masculine roles. The positive attributes are seen in how Dam Van Winkle’s strength; even though it isn’t seen that way in the story.
Christians today have a biblical principle and opinion of the universe existence. Christians believe that God created earth and that he accomplished that in only six days. Genesis 1 explains the creation and the interpretation is so utterly clear and one writer states “Thus, any interpretation that goes beyond a clear plain meaning of the text is considered to compromise Biblical authority and capitulate to evolutionary theories”. One look at the Young Earth View is said to be formed from the Modern English
In chapter of the book Penny is at a family dinner in which the intention is to praise the approval of her ship design that is to be used by the British admiralty. However, during this dinner, that was supposed to be celebrating Penny success, a debate arose about Pennys ship design. In this debate her uncle Alfred argued that due to ship engineering being a job that is predominantly male orientated Pennys design could not possibly be of a good quality. Following these remarks Penny would then try to calm the situation by saying “If it makes anyone feel any better, I don't deserve any credit, the whole idea was Neils.” This shows Pennys reluctance to accept credit for her extraordinary work and rather give credit to a man in order to abide within the misogynistic societal expectations of the time. These expectations being that men were supposed to be the intellectuals while women could not possibly be successful in a white collared environment due to their lack of intellect. With this in mind, the prejudice that Penny faces in this scene is highlighted from comments made by the narrator in an earlier chapter of the book. These comments were “To be a woman at a predominantly masculine job she had to be more than good. she had to be better than her male colleagues; she had to work longer hours and be doubly careful as
After conducting an hour-long observation and data collection of The Big Bang Theory, I found three specific patterns. These were patterns of traditional gender roles, heterosexual privilege, and gender performance. The first pattern is the traditional breadwinner and housewife roles that are portrayed throughout the episodes. In the show women are seen occupying the household while the men occupy the workplace. These traditional roles reinforce gendered behaviors and interactions amongst the male and female character that reflect modern day society.
Now you can already tell from the quick summary that stereotypes are presented in this movie but if you have watched this movie you know they stereotype; overweight people, jocks, emo’s, gays etc. In the movie karen is portrayed as the “dumb blonde” because she's always clueless. There was a scene towards the end of the movie where she was using her breast to tell the weather and says there is a “30% chance of rain” when it clearly is already raining. For a while girls were embarrassed of being blondes because of the image that was put on them. Blonde made them “stupid and
From the beginning of the novel, it is clear that sexism is an issue. Bennie is the first character that we see a clear sexist approach from. “The Mother Superior leaned forward
" This could change if TV shows featured smart blondes, and people (blonde or not) told others not to stereotype” (New Moon Girls). Her point is that it’s not fair to judge people base on their looks because they are most likely to be the opposite of what people are saying. This is important because this is like a wakeup call to everyone that we should stop doing what our gender construction designed us to be. Here is another point that these girls make about stereotypes, “I hate that some people think that girls are weaker than boys” (New Moon Girls). This statement is obviously not true because there are many girls that are stronger than boys.
“You know what I’m going to write in your obituary? “Penny was a shallow woman who wanted you to think she was prettier and smarter than she really was”” (1. 142-143). Bill, fed up with his wife’s idée fixe on her obituary, retorts how he is perceiving her actions. Although Penny is illustrated as a shallow, conceited woman, and Bill, the opposite, they still share similarities. “You are a decent guy. That’s why I love you” 1.175). They both agree that Bill is a “decent guy” (1.174-175), and she loves him because of this. Similarly, Bill loves Penny in spite of her flaws and because “you can make me laugh even when I’ve had a rotten day” (1.176). Likewise, they both are similar in the way
Though not an all out villain, Penny is the main antagonist by the end of the story. She could not accept rejection--that someone didn’t want to go to the Institute. The author made a point to mention, on numerous occasions, that no one would turn down the chance for their child to go to the Institute, which gives insight as to why Penny is so struck by Cassie and Duncan’s rejection. Her pride led her to extreme extents to try and get the validation she thought she deserved; she needed to feed her hungry
The cosmological argument is an a posteriori argument which intends to prove that there is an intelligent being that exists; the being is distinct from the universe, explains the existence of the universe, and is omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent and omnibenevolent. The basic notion of cosmological arguments is that the world and everything in it is dependent on something other than itself for its existence. It explains that everything has a cause, that there must have been a first cause, and that this first cause was itself uncaused.
There have been many theories concerning what the universe looks like, how it became this way, and where it is going. The most popular theory that people hold today is that the universe began when all the matter ever present in the universe was contained in a tiny speck and that spec exploded. This is known as the Big Bang. This theory has developed a great deal since it was first conceptualized and continues to evolve today. Many different scientists have had a hand in this.
For example, in the aforementioned episode Sheldon opens with “I’ve never played D&D with girls before,” to which Penny replies “Neither has anyone else.” Jokes such as this necessarily undermine the sexual validity of nerds, and perpetuates disempowering stereotypes. The relationship between characters in the show also belies the undercurrent of disempowerment. A running plot element throughout the show is the on-again-off-again relationship between Penny, a failed-actress-slash-career-waitress of average intelligence, and Leonard, a high-IQ physicist with a research position at Cal-Tech.
Should we as humans expect to find intelligent life elsewhere in the Universe? There are many reasons for and against this concept, but first we should trace just how our terrestrial life started.
Astronomers believed the Universe was created about 14 billion years ago. During that time, the entire Universe was inside a bubble that was thousands of times smaller than a pinhead, and it was insanely hot and dense. Out of nowhere this little bubble started expanding. This expansion created what we know as the Universe. In such little time the Universe went from the size of an atom to the ginormous galaxy we have that is continuously growing.
The article “” states that “gender identity is enacted through a variety of self-presentational strategies including attire, non-verbal and verbal behavior all of which interact with others per existing expectations”. Penny dresses in clothing that show off her body. It is clear through her appearance and interactions with others that Penny is valued for her sexuality. Most of Penny’s interaction with the other main characters point out her lack of knowledge. Consisting of the men having to explain there conversations in the most simplistic way, or pointing our her community college education compared to their accelerated programs at MIT, and Cal Tec. Another indication that Penny lacks talent and intelligence is the fact that although she aspires to be an actress in the six seasons The Big Bang Theory has aired Penny has been working as a waitress at The Cheese Cake Factory, and on multiple occasion the characters have made comments indicating that she is a bad waitress. The only advancement made to her career was when she started
