Black Death : The Black Plague

History’s Turning Points: The Black Death described what the Black Death (also commonly called the plague) was and how it spread. The Black Death was a deadly disease epidemic that occurred from 1348 to 1350. It started in Central Asia and eventually spread to Europe. In just two short years, the disease had taken the lives of over 20 million people. The disease was caused by infected fleas which were carried and spread by black rats. At this point in time, no one knew that the rats carried the disease. These infected rats eventually boarded merchant ships. These merchant ships then unknowingly spread the disease by transporting the stowaway black rats during their travels. Italian merchants who were escaping the war in Central Asia, were thought to be the first to accidentally transport the disease to Europe on their ships. After a few days of traveling, many sailors became ill and began to die. Once the ships arrived in Europe and it became known there were sick and dead sailors on board, many port cities tried to refuse their entry. The cities were trying to shield themselves from the disease. Eventually, the ships were able to dock for a short while, which is all the time the rats needed to escape to shore. Once in Europe, the disease spread quickly just as it had in Central Asia.

The Black Death discusses the causes and results of the plague that devastated medieval Europe. It focuses on the many effects it had on the culture of medieval Europe and the possibility that it expedited cultural change. I found that Robert S. Gottfried had two main theses in the book. He argued that rodent and insect life cycles, as well as the changing of weather systems affect plague. He claimed that the devastation plague causes is partly due to its perpetual recurrences. Plague ravaged Europe in cycles, devastated the people when they were recuperating. As can be later discovered in the book, the cycles of plague consumed the European population. Life was very busy for me in 1300’s, I travelled through many countries and continents following the trail of dead bodies. I am death. I have lived forever. I will live until no human lives no more. "The Black Death" is known as the worst natural disaster in European history. The plague spread throughout Europe from 1346-1352. Those who survived lived in constant fear of the plague's return and it did not disappear until the 1600s. Not only were the effects devastating at the time of infection, but during the aftermath as well. "The Black Death" of the fourteenth century dramatically altered Europe's social and economic structure.

In the year 1348 the world changed forever. The Black Death, which is another name for the Bubonic Plague, laid havoc on the entire world. “The plague chases the screaming without pity and does not accept a treasure for a ransom. Its engine is far-reaching. The plague enters into the house and swears it will not leave except with all of its inhabitants…” (Al-Wardi, #29, 113). The plague did not care if the people were rich, poor, white, black, Muslim or Catholic, it would kill whomever it could. The plague brought out the worst in people because people acted selfishly, people were completely inhumane, and there was no peace.

The Black Death was one of the most life-changing pandemics in history. It was first discovered 550 years later in the 1800s by Alexandre Yersin, a french biologist. In his honor, the plague was named Yersinia Pestis. The plague traveled in two major ways. Yersin discovered that it traveled by infected fleas; the flea would attempt to feed on a human or animal and would then regurgitate the disease into the new host, further spreading the illness. Urban areas across Europe were populous with rats, which were one of the main hosts of the plague. These rodents spread the Black Death throughout cities in days. The unaffected still were not safe if they did not come in contact with an infected flea or rat. The plague also traveled pneumonically, or through the air. It caused large boils full of blood and pus, which would pop and spread. Another symptom was coughing, which was one of the many ways of proliferation. The disease eventually spread throughout Europe and killed a third of it’s population. It’s wrath caused many shortages, loss in hope, riots, and even some good things, such as many changes in art, science, and education. Therefore, the Black Death was one of the most life-changing pandemics in history.

The Black Plague, one of the most devastating out breaks in history, is an historical event brought about with a great depression throughout Europe. This plague brought out the worst in mankind during the time the plague ran its course. How do people behave, when there environment becomes life threatening? (Herlihy, 18). The Black Death accounted for nearly one third of the deaths in Europe. Due to the death of many people there were severe shortages in labors, during these dreadful times. There were riots throughout Europe, and the great mortality brought on by the plague ripped society apart. A horrifying surprise befell the individuals who were gathering on the docks when they realized that a great number of sailors had died, and the lucky sailors were extremely ill. Comparing to cholera the number of deaths caused by the Black Plague in England is doubled making The Black Plague the most devastating disease (Slack 174). He introduces the facts how the European population was affected in both positive and negative ways. From his writing it stood out that the lower class was affected the most as the conditions they lived in were worse

The Black Death had a lot of gruesome and scary symptoms that made bystanders sick just watching. Certain people were more likely to acquire the Black Death than others. Since peasants had worse living conditions than the nobility, they were far more likely to catch the Plague. The history of the Plague and its track is surprising to a lot of people and when they realize just how many people the Plague actually killed, they will fully understand how scary it was for the people who didn 't have the disease that there was a chance they could become sick too. The transmission of this disease was transmitted in two ways; one with direct contact with a flea, while the pneumonic plague was transmitted through airborne droplets of saliva. This bacillus can be spread person to person, airborne, and by infected fleas and rats. This is how the deadly plague reached from port to port throughout Europe. After the plague passed there wasn’t many doctors that survived and not enough surfs to labor the land. It can be said that the disease alone was responsible for the changes in the feudal system. My goal in this paper is to show how The Black Death impacted all of Europe’s population, society, and the fall of feudal system.

The Plague is any epidemic scourge or calamity for which remedies are difficult to find, and according to the encyclopedia, plague is a common term for a disease of rodents that occasionally cause severe human infection. Named for the black spots that appeared on the victims' skin, the original disease originated from Oriental Rat Fleas and black rats. It first infected Mongol armies and traders in Asia, and then began moving west with them as they traveled.
