Black Kitten Monologue

Hailee Anderson Goal: My goal is to actually persuade the crowd and to fidget less while performing my monologue. It is good for a child to have a pet of their own Introduction/ Attention Grabbing Beginning: Have you ever begged your parents for a pet and they said no. Description of Issue: These days every kid wants a pet, but parents question if their child is ready for the responsibilities.

The orchestra tunes their instruments as I sit in the back of the auditorium, fiddling with my Thoroughly Modern Millie playbill. A friend of a friend, Jolie, is sat next to me as we wait for our mutual friend to join us. Though we sat in silence, it was comfortable. Our friend, Kyra, joins us as the lights begin to dim. Before we are left in the dark, Kyra throws me a knowing smile as if she knows exactly how these next two hours will impact the rest of my life. I smile back though and turn my attention to the stage.

     “The Black Cat,” a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, is about a man who is in jail confessing to murdering his wife. He starts of by stating that he was happily married to a nice beautiful woman, and the couple had many animals. Among those animals was a black cat named Pluto and this cat is the narrator’s favorite animal. The cat and the narrator established a great relationship and are almost inseparable. The narrator soon becomes an alcoholic and one day he returns from a town bar well intoxicated and tries to pet the cat. I remember when two of my kittens died in my hands, one recently and one when I was almost nine. I remember their names, Midnight is the one that died recently, Pudge is the one that died when I was almost nine. They were born sickly when they were born. I miss them so much, but I know they are angels now. They fly with everyone I lost whom are in heaven.

More than a week has passed since his death yet fierce tears refuse to stop their unending journey down my face. The vivid image of my father lying on that hospital bed.
