Hatchet Book Report In the novel Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen the theme is survival of the fittest. In Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen the book binds you to continue reading it until the very end. It like you are there with Brian and had a very descriptive image what it would look like standing next to him. “ A book is a magical thing that lets you travel to far-away places without leaving your chair” - Katrina Mayer. The plot of Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen is very interesting because of how you could imagine yourself right next to Brian like a seeing everything he sees. The plot was realistic because it actually could happen in real life and probably has happened in real life. Like how the plane ran out of gas and he had to try and land the plane. “ When he ran out of fuel the plane would start down” (Paulsen, Gary).“ He would have to find a clearing as he went down”(Paulsen, Gary). Throughout the story Brian has obstacles of survival he had to overcome. Landing the plane was just one of them he also had to find shelter, “ He had to have some kind of shelter,” he needed a fire to drive away the mosquitoes, “ I will have fire here, he thought, and struck again- I will have fire from the hatchet”(Paulsen, Gary). Throughout the story he has to face challenges to survive and overcome them. The main conflict in this story is man vs. nature and a little of man vs. self.
