Book Report On The Book Hatchet

In the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen the main character Brian faces many adversities. While Brian was flying a plane to go see his dad in Canada the pilot had a heart attack and Brian had to safely land the plane. Now he is all alone in the wilderness. The three adversities that Brian faced was flying the plane after the pilot died, making a fire, and making hunting weapons.

When his pilot has a heart attack and dies, Brian does not know how to fly the plane, so he crashes in a lake in the Canadian wilderness. With only a windbreaker and hatchet, Brian has to fight to stay alive. Over the course of the next month, Brian is determined to survive alone in the wilderness. He stays alive because he is courageous, stays positive, and is determined to live.

Resolutions to conflicts are always the most interesting parts of any fictional story. In the novel, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, city boy Brian crash lands a plane in the Canadian wilderness on the way to visit his father. Alone with only a hatchet his mother has given him, Brian is forced to use it for survival. Faced with many challenges in the wilderness, is Brian able to survive and go home? This novel has many conflicts and they are used to make the story intriguing. Most interesting parts to read in Hatchet is the ways Brian overcame nature’s obstacles and how he developed to his situation and how he was found and went home.

The conflict in this short story is about man vs man, man vs society and man vs self. Man vs man is portrayed through the bullies and Mickey, man vs society is struggling with identity and man vs self is the struggle with inner self power.

All stories have at least one of three different kinds of conflict, man versus man, man versus nature, and man versus himself. Some stories, like Richard Connell's “"The Most Dangerous Game"”, use all three conflicts uniquely and clearly. When each conflict is put to a test of strength in the story, man vs man is the strongest. The weakest is man vs himself. And the final conflict is man vs nature. The three conflicts are used evenly so they end up being as significant as each other.

A novel called Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is about a boy named Brian Robeson, who got stuck in the wilderness, after leaving his mother’s house to visit His father, who recently got divorced with Brian’s mother. Brian must learn how to use the forest around him to survive. Another novel called Stone Fox by John Renolds is about a boy named Little Willie, who’s Grandfather gets "sick" from not paying the taxes and his Grandfather says “I’ll sell the barn,” but Little willie wants to preserve the farm, so he completed in a dog sled race.

Jean Bressler believes Hatchet written by Gary Paulsen is an excellent book because the readers can relate to the protagonist having to adapt and survive. The character from hatchet named Brian Robinson is put into an epidemic and has to consider every choice he makes because his life depends on it. The accomplishments to improve his environment leads his hope of continued survival. Readers observe the maturity process of a thirteen year old boy. As Jean Bressler says “Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet is a good vehicle for middle/junior high students to observe the maturity process and learn the importance of decision making skills that they can apply to their own environments.” Bressler notices in the beginning of the book “[the mother] keeps him dependent

The main conflict of the novel is Man vs Self. Chief and McMurphy both are damaged more in the mental intuition then they would be in the outside world. Chief’s overcoming of this conflict will lead him to his escape.

At this point, other three parts of his psyche starts to reveal his unrevealed emotions such as fear, violence and depression.

Brian must learn to survive in the Canadian wilderness, and the the nature around him can end his life if he is not careful. Brian runs into many animals and his character dramatically changes throughout the novel, which changes his view on life and his situation. In the beginning of the story, Brian is a whiner and near the middle and end of the story, Brian changes and starts to realize that he is part of nature and he adapts to his surroundings!
