Born in 1818, Emily was the fifth of six children born to Patrick and Maria Bronte. Her father was curate of Haworth parsonage in Yorkshire, England, a home for local clergymen, where Emily spent nearly all of her life. However, the reader only understands the effects of Aunt Reed’s actions, through the use of older Jane’s narrative-monologue, which is present throughout this extract. “I was a discord in Gateshead; I was like nobody there; I had nothing in harmony with Mrs Reed or her children”, older Jane is looking back at her younger self, Bronte uses an extended metaphor by describing Jane as a “discord” in relation to the Reed families “harmony”, this highlights Jane’s feelings of being an unwanted outsider. Furthermore, the phrase” “;I was like nobody there;”, is separated from the rest of the text, like Jane is from the family and perpetuates her feelings of loneliness and being unwanted, she is “nobody” to them and overlooked similar to this brief sentence hidden between semi-colons.

Parents and kids always have this argument about if a kid can go out somewhere with their friends. As kids we understand that our parents are just protecting us from the dangers of the outside but sometimes a little bit too much. As teenagers we want to go out have some fun with our friends but when we ask our parents they give excuses on why we shouldn’t go out such as its too late in the day to go out, another time or no because you haven’t spend time with your family. I believe that kids should have the right to go out with their friends.
