Bullies In Lord Of The Flies

Research shows that half of the children in our world have been or are being bullied. Out of all those children bullied only one out of ten of them will report it. The dictionary defines bullying as “unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated over time” (Bully Definition” 1). Bullies have many characteristics such as rivalry, competitive behavior, and aggression. In Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, Jack can be considered the antagonist because he has many characteristics of a bully. One of the lines that stuck out was “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!” (Golding, William” 152). Right

The three main types of bullying are physical, verbal, and emotional. Physical bullying, according to the website typesofbullying.org, “In most instances, the aggressor is physically larger that the victim or may be within a group” (The Different Types of Bullying, 2013). Psychical bullying may involve the bully spiting, shoving, kicking, hitting, or punching the one being bullied (The Different Types of Bullying, 2013). Verbal bullying is where the bully only uses words to harm his victim (The Different Types of Bullying, 2013). The bully will taunt or tease his/her victim; and they will focus on the appearance of the one they are bullying (The Different Types of Bullying, 2013). From the story to today’s world, they are similar methods of bullying found in both, from making fun of a nerd to beating up a kid these are found in both.

In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, towards the end you see a lot of harsh name calling and violence. For instance when Jack took Piggy’s glasses and Ralph and Piggy went to get the glasses back. Jack called Piggy and Ralph awful names and wounded up even killing Piggy and hurting Ralph. These boys couldn’t have been taught this at home for their parents weren’t home from working to pay for the boarding school. They only were taught at school for they didn’t have an influence in their home. This still happens now-a-days, students will only learn at school. Schools should be the ones to teach the students what is respectful and how bully hurts

Many can argue that the reason the boys in Golding's Lord of the Flies turned savage is because they were really scared of each other. But that is not the case. Human instincts played a huge role in the outcome of their drastic change. Psychologically, Jack's hunger caused him to become aggressive towards the boys, making them aggressive as well. The lack of contact with the outside world affects the group of boys, causing them to be afraid of outsiders. Jack's tribe uses war paint to hide their identities and to make them feel better about their wrong doings, which results in more catastrophes. So, human instincts not only affect who they are, but their actions as well.

Why are people cruel to each other? Is it due to the environment one grows up in or the way someone was raised. There are many factors that lead to humans becoming cruel to others. In both Lord of the Flies and other articles, the reasons people are cruel to one another is due to the morals and ethics and the government system they are raised in. In Lord Of The Flies by William Golding, Golding illustrates how the difference in ethics and morals combined and the of governmental structures the boys have can lead to conflict, which eventually leads to violence within society.

Every individual reacts to unfamiliar situations differently and the outcomes are always different. Many things determine the outcome such as the level of maturity going into the situation, level of violence during the situation, and fear of the unknown in the situation, In Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies, it suggests that unfamiliar situations can lead too poor judgments resulting in violence. When a child is faced with an unfamiliar situation and has a lack of maturity, they may react poorly creating conflicts. In Golding's Lord of the flies, the immaturity and jealousy of the children began conflicts that resulted in violence. When Jack was jealous of Ralph being the chief “vicious, with full intention, he hurled his spear at Ralph” (181).

In Lord of the Flies, the kids secluded Piggy from their group because of the way he acted and his appearance was different from his peers. Children with abnormal appearances or who suffer from disabilities are more likely endure constant harassment from their peers in the classroom, this behavior is unacceptable and needs to be addressed. Bullying is when one person intimidates another. Bullying involves an aimed threat of physical aggression and is done by a larger or older person toward a smaller or younger person.

In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, the reader witness numerous accounts of bullying. We read about bullying when Piggy told Ralph he could call him any name besides what the kids at school used to call him, which was Piggy. Bullying is a huge problem all over the world and we need to end it.

One important reason that humans are basically violent and savage is that the hunters on the island acted violent and savage. According to the Houghton Mifflin, Harcourt Jack and his tribe represented evil and violence. " A dark side of human nature" What the Houghton is saying here is that the hunters were so eager to make up rules and were so ready to punish the people who didn't follow them, even disregarding the rules they already had as a whole group.
