c. Understanding BICs and CALPs is important for many different reasons. First BICs and CALPs divides the understanding of language into two different categories, each with their own components and sets of importance. There are many different processes ones goes through to learn a new language, and Cummins believe these processes are the same no matter what language one is attempting to speak. ELL learners will go through a

Cummins came up with his notion of BICs and CALPs though his study of a series of psychological reports done on ELL students. Educators were concerned about the ELL student performance and did not understand why children who gave the appearance of being fluent in English, were performing so poorly on exams; resulting in the assumption that they may have some type of learning disability. Cummins explained in the video we watched that the fact that they were from a non-English-speaking background often went overlooked. In addition, in these types of tests, these students performed much higher in verbal testing than non-verbal. Cummins quickly picked up on this gap. Cummins re-analyzed the data the school had and looked at how long they have been in the school district in relation to proficiency, and closeness to grade norms. With this soon came Cummins’s way of placing a distinction between basic “survival” communication vs academic communication and

Throughout the semester my partner and I have learned more about each other such as our history and our plans for the future. We have also discovered how each of us like to communicate differently. The main things I have noticed is that every conversation is unique and they are not all going to need my advice or strong probing. By watching others, I have noticed this same trend. Each week tactics are changing depending on the situation.
Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) refers to formal academic language. This includes anything from speaking, listening, reading, and writing about subject area content material. This level of language is essential for children to achieve in the classroom environment and can take five to seven years, for an EAL leaner to become competent in the language.
Cummins uses BICS (basic interpersonal communication skills) and CALP (cognitive academic) or conversational vs. academic.

a. Micheal is a student who is very energetic, normally verbal, and never sits in his chair. Micheal came into class acting withdrawn and quiet. He was sitting in his chair calmly with his head on his desk and that’s unlike him. The teacher walked over to Micheal and asked him what’s wrong, he looked away from his teacher, without a response laying his head back down on the desk. The teacher knew something was wrong so she asked an assistant to take him to the nurse. The nurse called Micheal's home and his dad answered. The nurse told him Micheal his not himself today and he’s being very withdrawn. Micheal's dad informed the nurse that Micheal was vomiting all morning before coming to school. The nursed informed his dad that his temperature is going up and its best he picks him up from school.
I believe that I have learned a lot new things in this class. The book Interpersonal communication is divided into three main sections. Chapters range from 1 -4,5-8,9-12. The first four chapter are the basic underlying information on interpersonal communication. In these chapter, it talk about yourself and communicating with others. "Next, it tells us how we should listen, understand, and use interpreting in conversation with others"( Beebe, S. A., Beebe, S. J., & Redmond, M. V pg-119). Also, the different types of things we should pay attention to like gestures and body language. We should learn to put yourself in other people's shoes in conversations. Chapters 5 to 8 are on communication skills. This section tells us about skills that are
The Cummins model is a second language acquisition is a process of learning language stated from infancy. Baby goes through the silent period by he/she listens to language spoken to him/her and process the sounds, without attempting to produce any of their own. As child grows and becomes more comfortable with the language that he/she begins to produce sounds. The child moves two letter syllables and finally to words. They begins to put the words together into short phrases and eventually, sentences. The stage of development takes one to two years called BICS. I went over the research of LEP children will move from the silent period to language production in one to two years. A child has BICS are not at this stage capable of meeting academic challenges in their new language. The child has to learn English from infancy enters school having to then learn academic concepts. LEP child needs one to two years in school simply to develop the verbal language that a native English speaking child possesses upon entering school. Educational have the lack of time for LEP children are forced to move to production much more quickly. Cummins vision will take a minimum of five to seven years to reach native proficiency in CALP and to be able to function successfully without help in a monolingual English classroom. During the developing CALP, Teacher should be working with LEP students on reading and writing techniques and
This highlights the use of basic grammar to the use of language on a higher and deeper level; for example the field, tenor and mode change. The field is the content matter or topic, the tenor is who is taking part in the communication and the mode is how the communication is happening, is it written or verbal (Lukin, Moore, Hereke, Wegener & Wu, 2011). Throughout the adolescents years good communication skills continue to be the foundations of learning, emotional development and socialising within school and onwards into the workplace (I CAN Talk Series, n.d). Therefore adolescents require effective speech, language and communication skills in order to have a wide range of life choices (I CAN Talk Series, n.d). I CAN Talk Series (n.d) highlights that there are certain aspects of language development being taught during secondary schooling years. These include: complex verbal reasoning, understanding and using figurative language, telling more involved stories and using increasingly sophisticated social communication skills (I CAN Talk Series, n.d). These skills are imperative to access both the academic and social curriculum of school, as well as ensuring a successful transition into the workplace (I CAN Talk Series,
