Positive or Negative? Music isn’t just sounds and words. Music is a form of art that affects many different things that people don’t know. From creativity, to your personality music plays a big factor. Not only physical things like that, music can alter how you think, how you feel, it can even affect your health. Music helps you exercise as well. The music industry in its entirety is positive, because it allows people to express themselves. People find a great deal of inspiration and soul in music. Music also helps the people who produce it to earn a living and profit. Music has a positive effect on humans, their development, and their way of life.

Other than changing your heartbeat and your blood pressure, music can help with diseases and development of the brain. Music training can significantly improve our motor and responding skills. Stress, pain management, rehabilitation, and behavior modification can be affected by music (Schneck 1) There are different diseases in particular that have shown a great improvement due to music therapy. Cerebral palsy can be affected with the help of music. Cerebral palsy is a condition marked by impaired muscle coordination and or other disabilities, typically caused by damage to the brain before or at birth. A four year old boy has cerebral palsy. Although struggling with this disease, is still able to play drums and piano. The music sends signals to his body that allows him to develop these attributes (Westley 103). This phenomenon makes the music therapy becomes popular. Music therapy is defined as “ the therapeutic use of music as to reduce anxiety, improve cognitive functioning, promote physical rehabilitation, or enhance interpersonal communication that typically involves listening to music, singing, playing musical instruments, or composing music “ in the Merriam-Webster.com. In other words, through the activity of music people can improve physical or psychological disease that achieves cure and health.
Billy Joel said, “I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music” (Music Quotes). Whether we realize it or not, music affects our lives greatly. The only thing for us to question is how. How does music impact your life and the lives of others? What does music do for us? People of all ages benefit emotionally, physically, and academically from music.
No one knows all the ways music can benefit the body but, it is known that music can affect brain waves, brain circulation, and stress hormones. Students who take music lessons have improved IQ levels and show improvement in nonmusical abilities as well. Listening to music composed by Mozart produces a short-term improvement in tasks that use spatial abilities. Studies of brain circulation have shown that people listening to Mozart have more activity in certain areas of the brain, which is called the Mozart effect. Although the reasons for this are not clear, this kind of information supports the idea that music can be used in many helpful ways. In general, music therapy done under the care of a professionally-trained therapist has a helpful effect, and is considered safe when used with standard treatment.
There are many different ways that we benefit from music. Music can inspire better self-esteem, and confidence. It’s a great way to set the mood, and a wonderful tool. Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program (Gram, 2005). Cerebral palsy refers to a group of chronic disorders that involve degrees of brain damage that affect body control and movement. The term cerebral refers to the brain, while palsy describes a disorder that impairs the control of body movement. These disorders are not the result of muscles or nerves problems. Instead, they are due to impaired motor areas in the brain that disrupt its ability to control movement and posture. The condition typically appears within the first few years of life and it is not marked by regression. (Mecham, 1986)

Music can be helped with our health. People use Music Therapy to help with many things. People use the therapy music such as the rain forest or low drum beats to help them go to sleep. Throughout my research, I have analyzed music therapy and the effects this can have with individuals who have depression, anxiety, autism, dementia, Alzheimer’s and many other mental illnesses that are rampant in our society. It provides the patient with a means of escape from the stressful and painful ordeals of life, and can even encourage them to recover from depression. To help children with ADHD, music therapy and medications can be used conjointly. Music, Cadena affirms, “can provide a calming, sedative affect and assist a child with focusing on the task at hand” (2). In regards to dementia, a study was done to investigate the effects that music would have on people with the disease. The findings demonstrated that “mean agitation levels were significantly lower while listening to music than before listening to the music” (3).
