Distracting myself from the idea of chewing gum has been successful. I have had a lot of work and studying to do, which can increment the need to chew gum, however, I have managed to concentrate on what I was doing and not pay much attention to that. Stress can increase the temptation, that is why I went to a yoga class at FIU. It is a combination of yoga poses and Pilates, which left me feeling very tired. However, I felt very good because it means I was doing something to stay healthy physically and mentally. I hope I can continue going despite the Miami’s fast life. In here there is not much time for hobbies unless you make it a priority. In addition, writing about what I feel and think about this exercise is helping me share my ideas and accomplishments. It also serves as a way of keeping a record of my progress, so any day that I feel tempted, I can look at these entries and see that this has helped me and what my thoughts are. It feels good being able to be in control of my decisions when it comes to that habit of chewing gum. …show more content…
I have to admit that I thought it was not going to be a big deal to taste it, so to avoid feeling pain I decided I was going to chew for a little while and throw it away. The point was just tasting it. I did and then threw it away. After doing that, I did not feel proud of myself, because even though I did not do it based on the necessity of chewing as a habit, the goal was not tasting it. The goal was to stop chewing gum even for a few seconds. I know it was different purpose but still the same product that I have been trying to avoid. However, if I think about it, I controlled the situation in the way that I decided when to throw it away, and I respected that. I did not just put it in my mouth and thought of just chewing until my jaw hurt. At least, I was in control during my
Gum ruins people’s clothing. If you have ever sat in gum, you know you do not want to have that experience again.
As stated earlier, chewing gum can help students focus. "Chewing gum is an easy tool students can use for a potential academic edge," which is what Craig Johnston, Ph.D., the lead researcher and an instructor in nutrition at the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, says. This evidence point to the fact that students who chew gum involved fewer breaks, paid more attention and stayed quiet during more or the class than students who didn't. In another study, Kim Morgan, the author of the study, states that ”It's been well established by previous research that chewing gum can benefit some areas of cognition. In our study we focussed on an audio task that involved short-term memory recall to see if chewing gum would improve concentration; especially in the latter stages of the task. (Kate Morgan, 2013)" The results of the study showed the participants who chewed gum had quicker reactions and more accurate results. Morgan explained at the end “Interestingly
Purpose : The purpose for this project explores whether chewing gum can benefit a majority of people with focus and concentration.
Most people believe that the process of chewing gum can be distracting not only to the chewer, but to the surrounding persons.
The first reason why it is difficult for me to handle open-mouth chewing is because doing so is impolite. One does not have to be an etiquette expert to know that chewing with the mouth closed is proper. Yet, whether you find yourself in restaurants, cafeterias, or other public or private settings, people can often be found chewing with their mouths open or talking with a mouthful of food. Contrary to
o Why do you continue it? Has there been a time when you have attempted to break this habit?
I can now return to my old habits without any guilt, except, I do not want to. This project has shown me the power of extremes. I do not want to continue with not eating any sweets, and yet I do not want to ignore what these five days have taught me. I want to find a moderation between the two. I want to compromise by balancing the mental endurance I gained from my
One reason why I believe gum should be allowed at school is because studies have proven that it increases grade point average. Baylor College of Medicine studied 108 eighth graders for 14 straight weeks. Half of them chewed gum during school work and homework while the other half didn’t. They noticed a three percent raise in the grades of those who chewed gum. If we were allowed to chew gum during school work and tests but then had to spit it out at the door when class was over, our grades would also have the chance to increase. For this reason I believe that chewing gum would be beneficial to students with memory problems that need a little extra boost to help them reach their full potential. This way teachers and students would both benefit for this new rule.
My first reason as to why we should be allowed to chew gum is because it can help certain people focus better. The more focused you are the more accurate and aware you are. Chewing gum also makes you answer questions far more quickly correctly. Finally, if you chew gum than you can focus longer meaning that you could take in more information. I usually have a hard time focusing so even if these
When you have gum in school it can make to much noise and you can distract
I know you find that putting a nice “wad” of chewing tobacco, or maybe one of the new pouches in helps you relieve a good amount of stress in that instance, but there are many different facts to that matter Hank. First off, nicotine is highly addictive (Health First) and being so addictive to something like nicotine will usually cause a dependency on the substance. Also, the problem doesn’t just lie within the addiction to the nicotine and other chemicals within the tobacco, but also with developing the habit of using the smokeless tobacco. Almost every time
When the gum hit the stores last year I was thrilled to try and get some, however I was only able to about a month later. One of my biggest track and field idles uses the gum and that’s not surprising since he made it. It makes since to have the gum, but keeping the boxes makes me a hoarder. I do use the boxes when I need to store stuff but looks really weird to have to go to a box of gum to get a paper clip or a pencil. I really don’t have any reason to keep boxes but for some reason instead of getting rid of them it looks like I collect them and really don’t want to make it look like that, but until I do toss them I will continue to use them for paper clip
SMACK! SMACK! POP! The teacher quietly pulls me out in the hall and ask if I have gum I sadly say yes, and I have to throw it away. I am going to try to make people able to chew bubble gum in class. What is really wrong with gum it’s not bad . People in our middle school or even elementary have probably been written up millions of times or have been told to throw it away a million times because they were chewing bubble gum. Bubble gum isn’t a crime so why should people have to throw away their store bought bubble gum that cost money. I think people should be able to chew bubble gum during class to take things out of you head that you don’t need to think about .
One of my biggest pet peeves is hearing people smack gum with their mouths open. To keep myself from freaking out and hurting someone’s feelings, I have had to try to change my behavior. Instead of confronting someone about it, I remove myself from the situation.
My gumption has definitely changed over the years. I feel I used to have more when I was younger, when I didn’t care as much. Now, in life, all I do is care. I care so much that it stresses me
